Missy's world and the "Bradley Effect".

I guess black folks are still feeling dissed after the folks in lily white New Hampshire pulled a Bradley Effect move on them. I mean just when we were ready to crown King Obama as our leader, A-merry-ca brings us back to reality. And every one seems so shocked that this could have happened. I mean wasn't Hillary down by double digits? They are calling this one of the greatest political upsets in history. It caught every one by surprise.....yeah well it didn't surprise me. And I suspect that quite a few of you reading this blog feel the same way.

The truth of the matter is that the more powerful Barrack's movement becomes, the more irrelevant angry and cynical black men like the field Negro will become. A-merry-ca could shut the field up tomorrow by rising above petty racial and gender politics and and embracing a truly unifying change in her politics. But it ain't happening; you know it, and so do I.

So you all are angry now, and you are turning on your first black Prez. Just read this from Donna Brazile:

" I could understand his frustration at this moment. But, look, he shouldn't take out all his pain on Barrack Obama. It's time that they regroup. Figure out what Hillary needs to do to get her campaign back on track. It sounds like sour grapes coming from the former commander in chief. Someone that many Democrats hold in high esteem. For him to go after Obama, using a fairy tale, calling him as he did last week. It's an insult. And I will tell you, as an African-American, I find his tone and his words to be very depressing..."

She was talking about BJ Bill of course, and her sentiments are being echoed by quite a few African American bloggers and others out there. Bill and Hilary Clinton can use code words with the best of them, and they know what buttons to push to bring out the racial bogeyman lurking behind every corner in A-merry-ca. And in case you were wondering, there is no gender bogeyman. Yes women have been discriminated against in this country, and they have suffered mightily at the hands of the all powerful white male. But don't for a minute think there is a fear of women out there. There isn't. But ask me if there is a fear of black men and you know what I will tell you.

So when I see columns like this one from a popular hometown columnist here in Philly, it gives me cause for pause. I really have to wonder what makes the white A-merry-can woman think that she has all of a sudden become the victim in her precious country. Memo to white women: You have nothing to worry about, next to house pets you are the most protected class in this country. So let's stop with the beat up on Hillary shtick. No one is beating up on Hillary. I know some people on the right think that she is a witch, but she still looks like a white woman to me.

Now I leave you with some comments left on the POLITICO'S blog after they (the commenters) read Donna Brazile's posts:

"Sounds like bitter loser pill Donna is what Carville is to HRC . . . race race race . . . "as an African-American" way to interject race into a non racial story . . . shut up! "

"Awe, I am such a fan of Donna Brazile (even at one point wanting to draft her as chair of the DNC) and I'm saddened that it seems like she played the race card here :-\ As a minority, that's depressing to me too Donna . . . "

"I ususally really like Donna, but she really played the race card on this one. Not cool. "
Posted By: Elizabeth January 08, 2008 at 08:17 PM

"Donna Brazile had an article in WaTimes yesterday that proves she writes about topics of which she has no clue. Her opening paragraph mischaracterized the economy of our country the past few years to an extent of embarassment. She's disgraceful for spouting such myths. Who can take her seriously, other than another myth-believing Bush-hater? And why above, is she bringing Bill Bennett into the fray? He's a highly principled man whose wife works in inner city Newark NJ schools to try to improve things, and Bennett would like nothing more than to improve the lot of inner-city blacks. DBrazile's a total farce. "

"Oprah (black)::Obama (black): Brazille (black):: Obama (black)"

"Donna, Obama was never a college professor. He was a lecturer. Big difference. "

"When are negroes going to stand on their own merits and quit using the race card?"
Posted By: Bigmarunga January 08, 2008 at 08:35 PM

"I'd like to know how Hillary and Bill have bypassed the writers strike? Just look at all the pre-written fiction that they have been acting out on the national stage."
Posted By: Writer January 08, 2008 at 08:35 PM

"Brazille is a racist and Bill and Hillary are your typical plantation master dems OB they dont plan of letting their slaves run the show. They make me sick. I am sick of Dems playing white against blacks and poor against rich. It is disgusting, but someone keeps voting for them. Just amazing. The Dem party is proof of how horrible the US educational system has become. You have to be drunk or an idiot to vote for any these conmen."
Posted By: jack January 08, 2008 at 08:37 PM "

"How pathetic that Brazile immediately has to resort to the hoary racism card to criticize Bill. No wonder the networks treat Obama with lamb skin gloves, they're all afraid of being called racists if they so much as show any criticism to Obama. His campaign knows this and they have benefited from a cowering media. Bill called out Obama on the falsies in his campaign, he never called Obama a kid, he simply said that Obama's claims were a fairly tale. Only in the mind of a professional race baiter can that be construed as racism. "

A black person mentions race in anyway, and the masses of defensive whites respond by accusing them of playing the race card. But what this is is the race card-card.

We are witnessing the state of race relations in America in 2008.

Hey Field,
These liberals are no better than republicans. They get upset when Negroes do not follow them. Bill Clinton pulled a Sista Soulja moment on Obama in New Hampshire. The pollsters cannot believe that the very serious about their role people of New Hampshire(bs alert) would voted against the black man. The fever that Obama caused is by now a migraine because black folks are being snapped back into reality. Oh yes I remain cautious about all the Democrats and hate the republicans. When you evaluate Clinton and Obama and their voting records there ain't a hell of difference when it is said and done. There is no way in hell that Obama could deliver a progressive movement in American politics with all the controlling interests that would cash in their chips on him. Him and Clinton will govern from the middle almost Republican Lite and never from a progressive point of view. You notice if you listen real carefully Obama's health plan will cause no harm to corportations nor the medical industrial complex in this nation. Black people always remember if it smells funky it really is funky.

FN, they are revealing, and they say a lot about Hill-Billy and their perception of white and black Americans.

Donna Brazile offered excellent advice to Bill, so it appears that she's wasn't totally disaffected when she made these remarks, although I believe she should have been.

Nevertheless, those that posted could see nothing but that, in their opinion, she had played the "race card," although that wasn't so.

Despite Obama's showing in Iowa, race consideration in this country is not dead, although there's no dearth of those trying to convince us otherwise, and are stepping up to punish us if we so much as suggest that it isn't.

Her complaint, as I read it, struck to the heart of Bill's infamous attempt to interject race into the fray.

We all know what the "fairy tale" remark referenced, whether Bill will own up to it or not.

He's saying that Obama (by virtue of being black) hasn't got a snowball chance in hell of becoming president.

And if he thinks so, and if white or black America think so, then they're living in a make-believe world.

Hillary on the other hand is the real deal, and is no "fairy tale."

She, and only she, as a Democratic Presidential hopeful, should be given this political plum, this brass ring, this "manifest destiny."

If you want a Democrat in the White House the next go around, you'd better stop flirting with this inexperienced, African American male (no matter how charismatic he may be, no matter how electrifying his speeches), and throw your hat into Hillary's ring.

Actually, most of the polls got the level of support for Obama roughly correct--around 36-38 percent. What they got badly wrong was Hillary's level of support. And Obama won the male vote by double digits, nearly the same margin by which Clinton won over women.
So, if it were a Bradley/Wilder effect, it would have to be largely localized to white women in New Hampshire.

If Obama is not elected the Democratic Nominee, blacks should vote in mass for the Republican Party, it is not like 4 years of REpublicans is going to seriously hurt blacks anyway.

When the Dems loose and the exit polls come out some light bulbs might go off in some of the Democratic Party establishment in Washington.

Dyson teased out this sentiment last night on Chris Matthews. The "fairytale" remark was definitely code and both white and black people know it.

Realistically, voters don't elect people because of qualifications or experience...it's all about trust. That why people take it so personally when a prez f**ks up. People trusted Clinton and Bush but felt betrayed by how both conducted themselves in the Whitehouse.

I just don't have a good feeling about Hill. Her ambitions kept her with Bill after the drama. Young women like me find that to be a move the resonates with an older generation. She should have got it on her own. Most of my 25-35 yo female friends feel the same way.

So basically it is better to keep on your knees begging liberal whites for handouts then run something because you are scared of sacrifice. It is obvious they don’t respect us. Power respects power. Power does not recognize begging and a$$kissing.

If we break the Democratic Party and they realize they don’t have the demographics to win a presidential election they will respect black folks. It is that simple.

That attitude never changes anything, ever.

You can't change the game by playing the game you have to break the game and redo the rules in a more equitable manner.

Bill Clinton's tone was depressing simply because he was up there scowling and slamming, crushing Obama over the media's unwillingness to criticize him, which is not true.

He was kicked around like a stray dog in the summer, especially for that "I will meet unconditionally with Iran and Syria" comment. I don't think Bill was being racist (definitely not on purpose, not very Clintonian), he was just being a Class-A Rectal Wart.

As far as the NH loss, race could have been a factor (in Iowa, people saw who others were voting for) but it definitely wasn't the only factor, and probably wasn't the primary one either. It could have been a combined effect of Hillary's stupid sobbing and Obama's general change message without any details getting a little tiresome. I know it's starting to sound dull to me.

I was shocked that Donna Brazile actually opened her mouth to say anything, because I have been disappointed in the Black punditry class for the silence against Barack Obama and the racial insults. Outside of Eugene Robinson skirting the edges of the 'Uppity Negro' meme coming from the Clintons, nobody else has said anything.

I am disgusted by the White 'Progressive' Blogosphere, when Black people point out to the PATTERN of racial insults, and how our entire lives, we're trained to notice them because OUR SURVIVAL in America depends upon it - that we're told it's in our 'imagination'.

I guess it was in Brazile's imagination too? I saw way more in Donna Brazile's clip that just that isolated comment from Bill Clinton. White people may not ever want to believe it, but Black folk would literally be exhausted if they fought everytime that they saw a racial incident. What usually happens is that it happens time and time and time again, and then, there is something that just breaks the camel's back, so to speak. When I saw Brazile, I saw the compiling of the Clinton incidents.

And, considering that Brazile is from Louisiana, she understands COMPLETELY what Clinton's use of the word KID is...it's a first cousin to BOY. Bill Clinton was seeking to diminish Obama's accomplishments as a Black Man.

Believe me, don't believe me. Doesn't matter. But, White folk continuing to ignore what Black folk are seeing is never a good thing.

When 'Isolated Incidents' are neither ISOLATED nor INCIDENTAL..

they form a PATTERN.

The PATTERN says something.

Sheehan
Penn
The 3 resignations of the Muslim/Madrassa LIE
Bob Kerrey
The Charlie Rose Interview
The MLK insult
The Mandela insult
Country going ' backwards' (Hillary Clinton)
The 'Fairy Tale' & 'Kid' insults
And, another one this morning from Andrew Cuomo.- SHUCK AND JIVE.

SHUCK AND JIVE?

How come it seems as if, we repeatedly get these statements coming from Clinton surrogates, and then we're either given a phony apology, or we're told we 'misinterpreted' it.

English is the PRIMARY language of the Black community. We understand it when we hear it, and don't need anyone else to interpret it for us.

But, BLACK folk who point this stuff out, are using the RACE CARD?

I don't think so.

It's called standing up for oneself. White folk get to insult Black people and Black people are just supposed to stand there and take it?

We're supposed to just stand there, like Hillary's Handkerchief Heads, as she pulls this 3-6-9 on Obama and SAY NOTHING?

HELL NO.

When the sh*% hits the fan, white folks will let you know how they feel about you which is what Bill did in making the fairytale commnet.

Which gets me to my second point. Toni Morrison did us such a disservice when she promulgated this lunacy about bill being the first black president. I guess this fool was dumb enough to really believe it. Actually, I take that back. When it was convenient for him to be black to get the black vote, he was black. But when a real black man comes along as a real contender for the presidency he becomes the white man who reminds white folks that they should know damn well there is no chance in hell that Barack is going to win. So, he's telling them to stop b*&l shi*&ng and go ahead an elect someone from the establishment (a privileged WHITE woman). Membership (as a white person, albeit female) has its privleges.

I'm more pissed off that John Kerry is demonstrating no loyalty to his former VP - and I hope if Obama gets the nod, he gives the VP ticket to Edwards, and cancel out Kerry and Clinton.

Face it, y'all, the fix is in. It will either be President McCain or Huckabee, because the ReThugs want Clinton, not Obama, as the Dem Nominee, and you will see Armageddon when that happens.

When the dust clears, it will be another ReThug in the Oval Office.

My only consolation is that the Congress will be more heavily Democratic, and maybe there will be enough grass-roots people elected to force out Reid, Pelosi, Hoyer, Schumer and Emmanuel as Democratic leaders who keep facilitating cave-ins to the Frat Boy, and keeping impeachment off the table.

gordon gartrelle said...

jimbo,

I have no doubt that you're "with black liberals." Please don't misunderstand me. I don't believe that black liberals back Obama and white liberals back Hillary. That's just wrong--it ignores the fact that there is multiracial support for both.

My point is that, as the race tightens and the stakes are raised, both candidates' supporters will make explicit the racialized and gendered subtexts of their disagreements (e.g. Steinem's recent NY Times piece).

White liberal condescenion and paternalism toward black people is still a problem. As are mainstream white feminists' antagonism toward black men and disregard for lower class women and women of color. A lot of black liberals (rightly) resent this shit, but this makes them highly suspicious of white liberals. Not recognizing or acknowledging these tensions is often a luxury of white privilege.

In any case, this stuff is going to be aired out in the next few months, and things are going to get very interesting.

Anonymous said...

My main problem with both the Bradley effect and Fraud as explanations is that in both cases I'd expect to see the variance between the exit polls and the results. At least CNN's exit poll was within roughly 1% of the actual vote, whereas their primary poll closest to the election was about as messed up as everyone else's.

I think that the best explanation is sampling error. Basically, each pollster creates a model of what class of people they think will vote in a particular election. They use this model to filter out who they think will vote and who they think won't vote, and (at least close to elections) tend to only report the former. The best way to construct a model is through historical data.

While the Republican side was very close to the primary of 8 years ago in terms of turnout (it was less than 1% off), the Democratic side had a turnout like a presidential election - not a primary. Simply put, a good chunk of people who weren't counted in pre-election polls actually did go and vote, and these "unlikely voters" had a decidedly pro-Clinton slant.

Francis Holland said...

Field, I don't think it's constructive to highlight battles between Black people and white women right now, because this is the fact: 75% of New Hampshire voters prefer a presidential nominee who is NOT a white man. If we focus on that, then someone who is NOT a white man may be elected president. If we lose sight of that, then another white man will we elected president and 75% of Democrats will be frustrated (including me!)

Hillary has to say SOMETHING in her effort to be elected president, and everything she says, if successful, will have the effect of denying a Black man the presidency. So, it's natural that anything she says is going to piss us off.

Love this post, but I do take issue with one item: while society generally doesn't have a fear of white women (or women in general), women in our country have much to fear -- namely the men with whom they enter into relationships. Take a look at the murder & assault rates with female victims & you'll see why women are justifiably frightened.

That's not to say that election fixing is not a possibility but this certainly doesn't look an example. There has been analysis by CNN or MSNBC f where Obabma was strong and where he wasn't and the voting patterns were consistent with that.

"She doesn't want to miss out on a sleep over in the Lincoln room, or a minor position in Hillary's administration".

"I hate to be flogging black folks all the time but could we please grow up just a little?"

You're patronizing. Not a way to "win friends and influence people."

Take your own advice. We're doing just fine following our own path.

Bill and Hillary are trying to use a twisted reverse psychology. By making Obama the BLACK candidate, ala Jesse Jakson, polarizing white, vaguely racist voters, they feel they can marginalize his effectiveness.
