What is a worker really worth?

I see that Glenn Beckkk is back, and I am happy to report that he is not dying........that is what he said, right?

Anyway, let's talk about my republican friends, shall we? It seems that they are hell bent on getting rid of the minimum wage. That is an interesting economic tactic, because it basically says that the federal government shouldn't mandate to employers what they can pay their employees. If, for instance, you just started your business and can only afford to pay a worker say $5.15 an hour, (the federal minimum wage prior to 2007) you should be allowed to do so. Who says that every worker should be worth at least $7.25 an hour? That's just the federal government involving themselves in places that they don't belong. What ever happened to states rights?

Republicans will tell you that the reason we are losing so many jobs to places like China is because they can afford to pay workers say .40 an hour. We don't create a pro business climate (the type the Chamber Of Commerce is pushing for) if we force businesses to pay workers a whopping $7.25 an hour. Besides, they reason, if you are allowed to hire a worker at say $3.50 an hour, you could hire two workers for what you would pay one at minimum wage rates. Aren't republicans smart? That would cut the unemployment numbers in half here in A-merry-ca with one quick swoop.

"The minimum wage is something that FDR put in place a long time ago during the Great Depression," Raese told ABC News Top Line. "I don't think it worked then. It didn't solve any problems then and it hasn't solved any problems in 50 years."

This is coming from a man who is running to become a senator from that very wealthy state known as West Virginia. Nice. Is it any wonder that Bruce Josten and the folks over at the Chamber are doing everything in their power to get the republicans back in power?- Even if it means funding republican campaigns with foreign money.- Because people being hungry in A-merry-ca doesn't really matter. It's not like they are corporations or anything. I don't know, maybe the people who strategize on behalf of the republicans told them that people who earn minimum wage don't vote. All those teenagers working at McDonald's don't have time for the voting booth.

Oh lawd! Where is his O ness when you need him? Wait.... never mind.

Can John Raese guarantee that businesses pay an employee more than the minimum wage? I really do not believe that he can. The current minimum wage should be raise because I do not know of many people who can live off that wage? Does Raese have a better than plan because I would like to hear it. I love how these politicians never want to talk about poverty in this country.

Ok, let me get this right. The repubs don't mind if certain people take home $5.00 or less an hour and live like obvious paupers. And now because of that, those same people will have to turn around and apply for food-stamps or public housing because they still can't afford the basic necessities to survive.

You can't win for losing with the repubs, can you.

GrannyStandingforTruth said...

Well...those who aren't satisfied with President Obama evidently wouldn't mind working for the wages paid in China because that's where the GOP is heading with that. Thank God I'm retired...oh wait, I forgot they'll want to end that too.

-->Oh Lawd, do we need a mass healing for the blind more than ever now. I'm just saying!

Oh wait, lets go with the $3.50, Oh yeah Government subsidized programs here they come. Smart.

Yup, the GOP has came down with "nostalgia fever" when folks used to make $2.50 up to $3.50 as a regular wage...not minimum which won't satisfy them until they get it down to 12 cents a day. I sure hope their "nostalgia fever" doesn't get worse because they'll do away with the work hours labor laws then and before you know it all working Americans regardless of color will be singing that song, "Steal Away."

Well...I guess I'd better get busy and start organizing and revive the "Underground Railroad because something tells me a whole bunch of Americans gone be needing it because they fell lock step into the enemies snares and trap. *sigh*

Here I come with my same old drum again. People WAKE UP!! The wealthy right wing oligarchs OWN all of the American COMMUNICATION channels (excepting the internet and they are working on that). The Wealthy Right Wing Oligarchs have spent more than FOUR DECADES building a massive propaganda machine here in America and they believe that now is the time to bring in the their harvest. Unlike the Nazis who seized all communication channels in prewar Germany, the wealthy American Right Wing Oligarchs (WARWO) bought and paid for a massive communication network that consists all AM Radio networks and virtually most of the TV networks.

The WARWO has chosen the 2010 Congressional elections to evaluate the EFFECTIVE of their propaganda machine in controlling the American voter. Why now?

Well the situation in 21st century domestic America is somewhat similar to prewar Germany. in that there is widespread discontent with a failed economic system, millions of depressed people out of work, and a government constantly vilified by the right wing propaganda machine as being ineffective and bumbling in its handling of the economic issues. Further, the election of an African American as president has mobilized the bigots and highlighted the presence of a scapegoat sub-population to blame for the woes of the nation. For these reasons the WARWO believe that it is an opportune time to evaluate the functionality of their propaganda machine on a nationwide basis.

In keeping with Herr Gobbels' design of the ideal propaganda machine, they are using the most inane, illogical, crazy candidates that they can find to be the Republican contenders for these all important Congressional seats. The WARWO premise is simple, if they can get these highly improbable candidates elected via the support of their 24/7 propaganda machine, then the schema works and in the future they can control the sentiment of the American voter and thereby control the American government.

Americans may not know that this is what is going on, but foreign governments know it. That is why in the aftermath of the Supreme Court decision that "corporations are people", foreign corporations are flooding money into the war chests of right wing organizations such as the American Chamber of Commerce. They want to be solid partners with the WARWO as the WARWO poltical machine assumes control of the American government.

Those Americans who are pissed off with the current state of affairs and go out and pull the lever for Republicans on November 2 will be destroying America as the land of opportunity for the working man. Even the age old concept of "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" will be simply a quaint idea that belongs to a bygone era in American history.

In an America controlled by the WARWO, individual inventors will no longer have rights to their ideas unless they are first created as the property of some major corporation. (No possiblity of an Thomas A. Edison or the Wright Brothers in the WARWO America!) The day of the individual citizen inventor will be long gone.

I still hold out a glimmer of hope that a miracle will occur between now and Novemver 2, and somehow keep angry white racist males from voting the WARWO crazy candidates into office. I'll keep on praying for one.... and just maybe...
Peace..

Companies with factories in China and Mexico can afford to pay their workers $0.40/hr because the standard of living supports it. And in those areas, that standard of living is damn-near medieval compared to the States. And for those pointing to the more wealthy areas of the country (i.e. Beijing, Mexico City, etc), the people there 1)are professionals with better paying jobs, 2)wealthy business and land owners with far more disposible income and 3)people who work 80-90 hr workweeks just to get their foot in the economic door.

There's simply no way that this country can economically compete with one where the rural farmers are simply glad for that $0.40/hr because they receive far less substanence farming. And there's no way you are gonna force Americans down to that standard, at least not without immense bloodshed. And it figures the same group of people who make millions of dollars per year from contributions, investments, kickbacks and other sources of income, legitimate and otherwise, are the same group of people calling for an abolition of the minimum wage.

Even if these folks manage to do away with the minimum wage, a few funny things will happen:

1) If you think U.S. companies will hire two people for $3.50 as opposed to just one for $7.25, think again. No company is gonna double or triple their personnel as a consequence of the new wage structure. Instead, they'll simply pocket the resultant savings, treat it as profit, and gift it to the executives as "bonuses". These execs will either sock the money away in investment ventures or they will piss it away on exotic goods (yachts, exotic cars, rare marble flooring, etc). Either way, that "trickle-down effect" is looking more like a nasty-ass golden shower.

2) Most people don't like busting their asses for $7.25/hr. They'll be even less reluctant to do it for $5.15/hr. And you won't see too many takers for $3.50//hr. People will simply stay away from crappy jobs that pay well below what the minimum wage used to be. Companies will be forced to set their wages at competitive amounts just to lure in new hires. Companies that don't do that will watch as potential hires stay away in droves. Either that, or hire illegal immigrants.

3) When faced with jobs paying $5, $4 or $3/hr instead of $8/hr, most people will just throw up their hands and apply for government assistance, "hustle" odd jobs (flea markets, garage sales, metal collection) that pay solely in cash, or both. Of course, conservatives might get the bright idea of reducing or ending government assistance, too.

Conservatives are lacking historical context. When people were making $2.50/hr back then, most cars could be bought, brand new, at around $2k-$3k. Houses cost under $30k and hamburgers were under a quarter. Most of these conservatives grew up in this era, as kids. These people are subconsciously longing for their "safe", "secure" childhoods, where uncertainties were kept at bay by their parents and they had none of the responsibilities or fears they had to contend with in today's world. It was an era where segregation kept their surroundings as homogenous and familiar as possible. Growing up with, and now having to contend with a world where strange people who look different than you are demanding things of you and well.....you're just pretty damn frightened that "THOSE people" are gonna take your head clean off and you just want to retreat back to the days when you could just hang out with your friends, play baseball and watch Captain Buckaroo, with nary a "strange" person in sight.

Conservatives are a scared lot who want to go back to familiar surroundings, irrespective of how that'll affect others.

If the situation is looking like pre-WWII Germany, then shouldn't we be on the lookout for the proverbial "Man on Horseback"? And shouldn't the Black community (and the Hispanics, for that matter) be concerned they're being crafted into scapegoats for the country's ills, a la those of Jewish descent? Not saying that we're gonna be seeing ovens and crap, but a country that thinks a certain part of its population is not "pulling it's own weight" will be open to the idea of sending "those people" in masse to "workcenters" that more or less resemble prisons and detainment facilities.

Think of it this way, the sudden demographic shift from "those people" being rounded up and sent away elsewhere will provide even more "liebenstraum" for "ordinary Americans". The government will tout the "benefits" of this program: lower crime, higher property values, lowered expenditures on welfare and government assistance and, of course, the "economic contributions" that "those people" can make. No one will mention this and "Guantanimo Bay" or "CIA detention centers" in the same sentence, although both will be a walk in the park compared to this.

All the "Man on Horseback" has to do is put on his best Reagan face and lulliby the American public into letting this happen. And it won't be until the country is rocked on its ass by the resultant rebellion/civil war/world war conflict that comes as a consequence that the people will finally wake up to the sheer horror that idea was.

The trouble with the Bay Area-Oakland, Richmond, El Cerrito, San Leandro, Hayward, etc- is there is a high percentage of Blacks who are practically illiterate. I've never experienced anything like it. Also, because of the small percentage of Blacks in CA, they lack political power and seem almost irrelevant. They have a black mayor in Oakland, who is old, and seems not to not care about much of anything, including the Blacks who elected him. But that's nothing new for Blacks, is it?

While living in the Bay Area, the racist culture felt like living in hell with 'good' weather. It felt like a cross between White Texans and hard working Mexicans laboring for cheap wages-- and a mix of unstructured Christianity with a dash of Buddhism and Vedanta.

I saw Black and White couples with their baby on one side of Piedmont, Broadway and College Ave and skinheads with Nazi tatoos hanging out on the other side-in Oakland. It is weird!

The only meaningful and pleasant feature of Oakland was the weather. I say "was" because I no longer live there and I don't miss it one bit, EXCEPT the weather. It is probably the best weather on the planet. But other than the weather, the ignorance, illiteracy, and narrow-mindedness of Blacks in the Bay Area is astonishing.

Hence, the Blacks (and Mexicans) have LIFETIME CAREERS at McDonalds, KFC, Popeye's, Wendy's, etc. The Mexicans also work at the same restaurants so their children won't have to work there. Their goal is to sacrifice so the next generation can advance. Of course, some are illegal, but with liberal progressive Blacks like YOU advocating for them, I am sure they will be legal soon.:) Btw, they are pushing out your black brothers and sisters at those restaurants. But hey. Who cares, right? What's more important than Blacks helping out the Mexicans?

A large segment of Blacks in Oakland, Hayward, Richmond and some other parts of the Bay Area just don't give a damn about their kids. Their attitude is against education...it is considered a "White thang."

Don't get me wrong, there are some educated Blacks around the Bay Area but they are few and live quietly and almost undetected among a sea of Whites. Field, I bet even YOU wouldn't be able to relate to Blacks in the Bay Area. In fact, you probably wouldn't be able to relate to 'anybody' there, and you are a racism chaser!

Some Liberals say the BA is like being in another country. Some Conservatives say it's a place with too much Granola.

But you would love the weather. It beats Philly weather by a long shot. But that isn't saying much.

The Federal Minimum wage is so moribund and shrunken away to near meaningless insignificance that less than 5% of the working American public actually works for it. I hate to break it to you, but "superiority" is an illusion. Although it's a rather convincing illusion, as illusions go, it has a greater purpose, and exists as more than an illusion: It's an effective tool, as well--although it's rarely used that way.

Instead of using the illusion of "superiority" as a tool, for which it was intended, you have decided to insert yourself into the illusion, and see it as "real," a cardinal error that befalls many.

The illusion of "superiority" was to give you the experience of rising above life's many challenges and obstacles, to know and experience your innate superiority to all that life may bring.

But you chose to use it to cast down your fellowman, to see him and her as less than perfect--a state, by the way, that exists in your imagination only.

I will know the extent to which you will allow yourself to remember, and how dedicated you are to the "illusion," by how you choose to respond.

Choose wisely--more depends upon your choice than you know.

This psychological argument is the Obamite’s last bastion of defense, especially the “What about the children?” trump card. Yet there is mounting and disturbing evidence that the psychological harm done to Black people by Obama’s presidency may be even greater than the economic and political damage. Barack Obama’s presidency is driving millions of African Americans insane – stone, cold out of their minds.

53 percent Black majority think that the economy is starting to recover. Only 40 percent of whites hold that opinion. Yet, for the average Black or white working class person with a mortgage to pay, the situation is as bad as ever – and for Black people, that means roughly twice as bad. The Pew poll shows that 35 percent of Blacks report their homes are worth less than their mortgages, compared to just 18 percent for white people. Fifty-four percent of Blacks took a pay cut, worked reduced hours or were forced to take unpaid leave during the Great Recession. Only 37 percent of whites suffered such employment trauma, yet Blacks are consistently – and insanely – more optimistic about the future, and feel better about the present, than whites do. Nearly a third of Blacks say they are in better shape than before the recession began – a figure with no basis whatsoever in real life, and a perception that is at total war with reality. Everything is worse for every major Black demographic since December 2007. There is nothing to be upbeat about – except, for Obama supporters, the election 0f 2008. From that point on, a large segment of Black America became disconnected from reality, numb to their own pain and to the pain of their children. They have been singing zippidity-doo-dah while all around them Black America is in economic free-fall. These deluded Black folks have been rendered incompetent and politically useless to themselves and their families by the mere existence of a Black president. Obama's election was, besides the Great Recession itself, the worse thing that has happened to Black people in a long time.

I keep telling them that on this blog, but some don't see it that way. I sometimes find this to be very perplexing, but yet I'm not surprised. I've yet to see them get this fired up for black Africans/Haitians. I suspect personal interest, along with racial/hue assimilation preferences are blinding some blacks who go out their way to support others who would take no time to string them up as a black pinata before they can say 'Hola'. The idea of reciprocation, or future self preservation is at lost here.

When the entire block is on fire, normal people run to secure their own home and children first and foremost before they go running to out the fire at their neighbor's house. It's not that you don't care about your neighbor, but your initial concern for your own children and kin in an equally burning building should be instinctive, this is normal and practical behavior. Sigh.

Today, I asked a class for which I was subbing (high-school English students, about a dozen, all-black, at one of CPS's actually nice high-school facilities) what they thought of Obama. Their initial reaction was one of, for lack of a better way to say it, pride and joy.”
“But upon closer inspection, this turned out to be a rather shallow sentiment. For when I asked them if they expected any real changes under Obama, they all said no.”

“So while they are (currently) happy he is in the White House, they know full well that he will be no different from any other president -- and it's not something they only know ’deep down.’ They know it pretty close to the surface.”

If I’m right, and I think I am, there are a number of ways – five strong ones, by my tally above – in which Obama’s ascendancy may have heralded not simply “no change” for racial justice but even, sadly, change for the worse.

After King's murder in 1968, the word "poverty" not only disappeared from the nation’s table, it became a dirty word. The poor became a political embarrassment. Their existence flew in the face of the embedded laissez faire notion that the poor in America are poor because of their personal failings, not because anything is wrong with the system. Conservatives vehemently oppose spending endless dollars on job and skills training, education, health and expanded child care programs to assure jobs for all.

The view that government should play no, or at best a minimal, role in assisting the poor creeps through in Obama’s speeches when he touts personal responsibility as the key to uplift. He made it plain to the Congressional Black Caucus in December that he would propose no special programs, initiatives, or boost funding to tackle the brutal joblessness among blacks, especially young black males.

He didn’t earmark any dollars specifically for anti-poverty programs in his economic stimulus package. Despite Obama’s tout that the stimulus created and saved 2 million jobs there’s absolutely no evidence that the dollars created any new jobs for the black poor in any substantial numbers. And there is much evidence that the stimulus dollars have gone everywhere but to the nation’s inner cities.

http://www.racismreview.com/blog/2010/04/28/black-unemployment-in-the-u-s-so-bad-the-un-is-investigating/

The level of black unemployment in the U.S. is so bad that the United Nations is launching an investigation. And, indeed the figures on unemployment by race are grim for blacks, especially black men. The latest unemployment figures show a stark racial disparity. For black men, the unemployment rate was 20.2%, compared to 9.6% unemployment for white men. (Of course, these numbers are low given that “discouraged workers,” those who are no longer looking for employment, are not included, nor are those who are incarcerated.) The outrageously high unemployment among black Americans means the United States has failed to live up to commitments it made under United Nations human rights agreements, a coalition of advocacy groups charges (pdf), according to a recent report by City Limits.

In a filing to the UN’s Human Rights Council last week, a group that includes New York’s Urban Justice Center and National Employment Law Project, casts “the over-representation of women and racial and ethnic minorities in unemployment, underemployment, and poverty” as a human rights issue and calls on Washington “to take specific steps to create employment opportunities for these groups.” Thus far, the U.S. permanent mission to the U.N. has not commented.

why does that bother you

but the fact that the cia and BP funded hobama does not???????

BP and its employees have given more than $3.5 million to federal candidates over the past 20 years, with the largest chunk of their money going to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Donations come from a mix of employees and the company’s political action committees — $2.89 million flowed to campaigns from BP-related PACs and about $638,000 came from individuals.

On top of that, the oil giant has spent millions each year on lobbying — including $15.9 million last year alone — as it has tried to influence energy policy.

During his time in the Senate and while running for president, Obama received a total of $77,051 from the oil giant and is the top recipient of BP PAC and individual money over the past 20 years, according to financial disclosure records.

Lie. If you can produce a quote from Obama indicating such I won't post here for a month.

AB sez

Because of Obama's policies?

Prove it.

The only jobs LOST because of Obama are the government census jobs that were part of the stimulus package.

The unemployment rate doubles under Bush and the GOP and some idiots wanna vote them BACK IN?

Jibreel Riley,

You probably may never meet those people. They ride the bus, they are usually in some labor intensive jobs or small manufacturing or assembly. Some examples, order picking Costume Jewelry in a distributor, a cashier or stock person in a non-union grocery or assembling PC boards or medical parts.
Many of the jobs are done offshore, so local workers are competing with wages from $.40 to $1.25.

So many of these workers are not just barely over 19, but middle aged. During the 80's many places restructured their labor cost, where some workers lost wages.

Perhaps you are not aware, but many Black families depend upon extended family to buy a house or rent, every one in the house may be making minimum wage.

When the president campaigned for the stimulus package at the start of his presidency, he and others in his administration repeatedly insisted the investments would go to "shovel-ready" projects -- projects that would put people to work right away.

With unemployment hovering near 10 percent nearly two years after President Obama signed his economic stimulus package, Mr. Obama is acknowledging that, despite his campaign promises, "there's no such thing as shovel-ready projects."

As recently as August, however, local governments were still facing delays spending the money they were allocated from the stimulus, CBS News Correspondent Nancy Cordes reported.

Hmmm...maybe Obama saw all the 'porch sitters' on his way to work and wondered why so many able-bodied young Black men had so much free time. Plenty of businesses were hiring employees at wages that reflected their current skill set. So, it must have caused him to ask why they all chose to sit on the stoop.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – New U.S. claims for jobless benefits rose last week, hardening the view the central bank will pump more money into the economy, and keeping pressure on Democrats poised to lose congressional seats in November 2 polls.

At the same time, record-high imports from China helped push the U.S. trade deficit wider in August, while rising food and energy prices pushed inflation at the wholesale level up twice as fast as expected last month.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose to a higher-than-expected 462,000 in the latest week, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected initial claims at 445,000 in the latest week.

." The so-called infrastructure bank masquerades as the beginning of an industrial policy to reverse the export of jobs from the United States. Obama is spinning the scheme as his variation on Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, when the federal government directly created millions of jobs and invested public monies in a vast, new infrastructure, much of which we are still using, today. But in reality, the president's proposed bank bears no resemblance to the New Deal of the 1930s. Rather, it is yet another ploy to create a new windfall for the private bankers on Wall Street - a public-private scam. "The moneyed classes refuse to invest in any economic and social development unless they are positioned in the middle of the money stream."

But, that's what you get when finance capital has a lock on the political and economic process; nothing emerges except that which expands the power of capital. At this stage in the decline of capitalism, the moneyed classes refuse to invest in any economic and social development unless they are positioned in the middle of the money stream, to siphon off the greater part for themselves, at no risk to themselves, and with ultimate control over the shape of the project. They will not support education unless they own a profitable piece of it, through hedge fund-backed charter school companies and other privatization schemes. They will not allow a revamping of health care unless their profits and commanding position in the system are preserved. They will not lift a finger to slow the process of global warming, unless creating a green economy dumps a forest of green on their balance sheets. And they will certainly not permit any combination of politicians funded by them - as is the Obama wing of the Democratic Party - to even attempt a modest re-industrialization of the United States unless they are allowed to empty the U.S. Treasury of every available public dollar.

Our nation’s unemployment rate is hovering near 10% not because of record job losses, as Biden suggests, but because of record job non-creation. Private sector employers have gone on strike. Contrary to what the President’s economic wizards and New York Times columnists believe, massive government deficit spending does not stimulate job creation. President Obama does not have a secret vault of money he can just throw at the American people. The resources the government spends come from the economy. When the government increases spending, it crowds out the resources that business owners could have invested in their enterprises. Private investment falls sharply when government spending rises. According to Sherk, annual private fixed nonresidential investment has fallen by $327 billion since the recession started— a 19 percent drop. Less private investment means less hiring.

And then there is the rest of the Obama agenda that has created, and is creating, significant economic uncertainty: Obamacare, EPA carbon regulations, financial regulations and impending tax hikes. Renouncing these policies, and canceling the rest of the stimulus, would do more to spur private sector job creation than anything this White House has done so far.

I agree. This has proven to be very successful for most of the white, Jewish, Indian, Arab, Asian, and other non-black families. However, this concept doesn't seem to work for blacks throughout the world.

It appears, that blacks in Africa, America, UK and the Carib diaspora tend to preferably invest their resources to uplift other racial groups and communities other than their own. Especially through black males who marry out at the highest rate than any other male group on this planet. Wealth and resources are usually spread through men, and the women tend to hold the men's wallets in their purses.

In that regard, it seems the black comm. would do much better if they just concentrate on the education for black girls and encourage more black women to date wealthy non-black men. Some things would faster trickle down to benefit the black race. LOL.

Ok, I may have just wanted to pull some legs. But somebody should come along now and tell me that I'm ugly and manless, etc etc. LOL.

The Stimulus Package worked in staving off the worst of the economic damage.

A third in tax cuts, a third in financial support to the states to keep them afloat, and then a third in the projects and grants for the most part it did stablize the economy and prevent an all out crash.

Has it produced jobs fast enough?

No and that, as a lot of people on the left have complained, is because it hasn't gone far enough.

Companies added just 64,000 jobs last month, a slowdown from 93,000 jobs in August and 117,000 in July, the Labor Department reported Friday. But over all, the economy lost 95,000 nonfarm jobs in September, the result of a 159,000 decline in government jobs at all levels. Obama Sides With Bankers - Will Not Ban ForeclosuresIn another display of just what a shameless corporate lackey he truly is, President Obama has refused to institute a temporary moratorium on foreclosures.

After one million foreclosures last year, the USA is currently on track for 1.2 million foreclosures in 2010. Recently, it came to light that tens of thousands of these foreclosures are not legitimate. Even some banks have instituted a voluntary and temporary moratorium on their own foreclosures.

But our beloved President, the man who promised us "Change You Can Believe In", has refused to do anything about a temporary moratorium while the confusion over legitimacy is investigated.

It's no coincidence that Christina Romer, chairwoman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, announced her retirement the day before Friday's brutal unemployment report. With 131,000 more jobs lost in July, and downward revisions of 97,000 for the previous two months, it's easy to see why she would start looking for the exits.

Romer is best known for drafting the February 2009 report "The Job Impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan," which the White House used as an ammunition belt in the fight to gain passage of its $862 billion economic stimulus bill (the actual cost of which exceeds $1 trillion when interest is included). Romer predicted that following passage of the stimulus bill, unemployment would plateau below 8 percent last fall and by this month register at 7 percent. That's not close enough for government work, as unemployment stands at 9.5 percent today. It would be higher except that hundreds of thousands of frustrated job seekers have given up looking for new jobs and dropped out of the labor force.

Predictably, the stimulus bill has proven to be an extraordinary waste of borrowed money that has failed to create jobs, generate economic growth or do much of anything other than line the pockets of White House political allies. That and give $308 million in subsidies to BP before the Gulf oil spill disaster, and subsidize a study on what happens when monkeys snort coke

LAB et al,
How do you think Black people got college educated in the past. The fallacy with your argument is those Black people were just like the Jews and other immigrants. While Jews didn't have the social access, they had the economic access. No problem raising capital or being able to buy properties, however despite this many Black people did prosper. Incidentally much of their efforts were destroyed by factors such as envy by whites or to advanced the highway system and urban renewal. When eminent domain isn't required to really give you full market value for your property and then Red lining limits what you can buy or where you live. Every time Black people take a hit, it seems to take a little longer to get back on our feet.

The successes Black people have now is not seen as much, because the white race hustlers feel it in their best interest to define Blacks as all being poor and uneducated. All as having the sharecropper story and having only first generation college graduates. There are many families where in the 19th and 20th century where one child finish school and sent his sibling to school and so on, until there may be nine children with college educations.

There are reasons for poverty, many of which are not endemic to being Black and many of which we cannot solved by saying "be like those other people."

But history proves otherwise:

In 1939, after a doubling of federal spending failed to relieve the Great Depression, Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau said that "we have tried spending money. We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work. . . . After eight years of this administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started . . . and an enormous debt to boot!"
Japan made the same mistake in the 1990s, building the largest government debt in the industrial world.
The simple reason government spending fails to end recessions is that Congress does not have a vault of money waiting to be distributed, says Riedl. Every dollar Congress "injects" into the economy must first be taxed or borrowed out of the economy. No new income, and therefore no new demand, is created. They are merely redistributed from one group of people to another. Congress cannot create new purchasing power out of thin air.

The mistaken view of fiscal stimulus persists because we can easily see the people put to work with government funds. We don't see the jobs that would have been created elsewhere in the economy with those same dollars had they not been lent to Washington.

This article is from August. Remember when the CBO also said that Obamacare was going to save money earlier this year?

Let me try and help you understand the economy and get over your obamabot talking points, you may as well, he has gotten over them.

The simple reason government spending fails to end recessions is that Congress does not have a vault of money waiting to be distributed. Every dollar Congress “injects” into the economy must first be taxed or borrowed out of the economy. No new income, and therefore no new demand, is created. They are merely redistributed from one group of people to another. Congress cannot create new purchasing power out of thin air.

This is intuitively clear in the case of funding new spending with new taxes. Yet funding new spending with new borrowing is also pure redistribution, since the investors who lend Washington the money will have that much less to invest in the economy. The fact that borrowed funds (unlike taxes) must later be repaid by the government makes them no less of a zero-sum transfer today.

Even during recessions — when total production falls, leaving people with less income to spend — Congress cannot create new demand and income. Any government spending that increases production at factories and puts unemployed individuals to work will be financed by removing funds (and thus idling resources) elsewhere in the economy. This is true whether the unemployment rate is 5 percent or 50 percent.

For example, many lawmakers claim that every $1 billion in highway stimulus will create 47,576 new construction jobs. But Congress must first borrow that $1 billion out of the private economy, which will then lose a roughly equivalent number of jobs. As transportation-policy expert Ronald Utt has explained, “the only way that $1 billion of new highway spending can create 47,576 new jobs is if the $1 billion appears out of nowhere as if it were manna from heaven.” Removing water from one end of a swimming pool and dumping it in the other end will not raise the overall water level. Similarly, moving dollars from one part of the economy to the other will not expand the economy. Not even in the short run.

The truth about Black America is that more black folks are working and middle class than poor. The black poor in this country shrunk to about 19.5% during the economic boom under Clinton. With the current economic meltdown engendered by the Bush Wall Street Ponzi fiasco, and the "Money for nothing" mortgage scam - that is up to about 25% due to massive under- and unemployment..

Further, the fastest growing ethnic segment in America the last 10 years of families with combined incomes over $150k - have been black families. That segment has shown a 55% jump since 2000, and shows signs of making greater gains, as more second generation black middle class matriculate through college.

The percentage of the black population with high school degrees has shot up from 66% in 1990 to over 83% today, college graduate rates increased 42% between 1990 and 1995, and continue to increase at a substantially higher rate than the population in general, Almost 1/3 of all African Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 are in enrolled in higher education - that is up from 20% in 1990. Blacks who do achieve a degree, are 3 times more likely than their white counterparts to get a post-grad. 12% of the black population between 25 and 35 is pursuing higher education, vs. 9.8% of whites.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New claims for jobless benefits unexpectedly rose last week, hardening the view the central bank will pump more money into the economy in hopes of boosting growth and lowering unemployment.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose to a higher-than-expected 462,000 in the latest week, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

At the same time, record-high imports from China helped push the U.S. trade deficit wider in August, which could drag on U.S. growth and increase international tensions over trade and currency policy

The U.S. economy slowed sharply in the second quarter, weighed down by a hefty trade gap and dwindling fiscal stimulus.

The housing sector, which was at the center of the deepest recession since the Great Depression, continues to struggle.

hobama's deliberate depression that u deny has only just begun...for decades to come!!!

your imaginary bs stats & your god hobama will never save us!!!

The unemployment rate hit 10 percent in October, and there are good reasons to believe that by 2011, 2012, even 2014, it will have declined only a little. Late last year, the average duration of unemployment surpassed six months, the first time that has happened since 1948, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics began tracking that number. As of this writing, for every open job in the U.S., six people are actively looking for work.

All of these figures understate the magnitude of the jobs crisis. The broadest measure of unemployment and underemployment (which includes people who want to work but have stopped actively searching for a job, along with those who want full-time jobs but can find only part-time work) reached 17.4 percent in October, which appears to be the highest figure since the 1930s. And for large swaths of society—young adults, men, minorities—that figure was much higher (among teenagers, for instance, even the narrowest measure of unemployment stood at roughly 27 percent). One recent survey showed that 44 percent of families had experienced a job loss, a reduction in hours, or a pay cut in the past year.

There is unemployment, a brief and relatively routine transitional state that results from the rise and fall of companies in any economy, and there is unemployment—chronic, all-consuming. The former is a necessary lubricant in any engine of economic growth. The latter is a pestilence that slowly eats away at people, families, and, if it spreads widely enough, the fabric of society. Indeed, history suggests that it is perhaps society’s most noxious ill.

The worst effects of pervasive joblessness—on family, politics, society—take time to incubate, and they show themselves only slowly. But ultimately, they leave deep marks that endure long after boom times have returned. Some of these marks are just now becoming visible, and even if the economy magically and fully recovers tomorrow, new ones will continue to appear. The longer our economic slump lasts, the deeper they’ll be.

Ass-non Tom,

I see you're upset.

Facts seem to do that to pathetic ass-kissin, bott lickin foot shufflin buffoons like yourself.

"So in your own words. Blacks are doin fine, but its the white race hustlers who are taking the time to try and convince people otherwise...really?"

No that's not what I said at all Buckwheat but honesty and forthright debate aren't you're strong suits.

My point is that in the 45 years since the great Civil Rights Legislation was passed black America has made tremendous strides and have advanced to areas unheard of in 1965.

We still have one-quarter of our community mired in poverty and self-perpetuating dysfunction which people like you to make representative of the entire community.

I have a couple of questions for you and I'd appreciate a direct answer.

Do you think that blacks were better off under Jim Crow?

Are you another Constructive Feedback who feels that blacks are incapable of governing themselves?

Why did my presentation of positive facts and figures on the State of Black America ANGER you?

"Well let me tell you, I kicked morons like you to the curb when I was a kid. They tried to tell me goin to school was bein white. I told them if bein black meant bein stupid and throwin my life away then call me any color you want.
They still call me lookin for handouts..."

LMAO!!!!!!

Same ol tired Uncle Tom bulll$hit I've heard 100 times before from your ilk.

Answer one more question for me.

If the only successful blacks are conservatives as you seem to suggest, why is the overwhelming majority of the black middle, upper and professional class democratic and liberal???

@uptownsteve: co-sign.

And if I may go back to the original issue of the min. wage, what conservatives never really seem to acknowledge is that if you are a business and you can't afford to pay some kid $7 bucks an hour, then maybe you don't need to be in business.

The presumption is always one that business/unfettered market can do no wrong. This is, of course, a mistake. See sub-prime mortgage crisis of 2008; see also current depression caused by Wall Street.

So hows that stimulus working for ya? When do you start your one month break? Or are you going to come back and say we have better shoes now then 100 years ago so the stimulus is working because black poverty is all a white mans conspiracy like you already have?

The rest of your crap is just a distraction. All you know, crap.
You couldnt understand how the economy works even if that woman who pays your bills explained it to you.

"In that regard, it seems the black comm. would do much better if they just concentrate on the education for black girls and encourage more black women to date wealthy non-black men. Some things would faster trickle down to benefit the black race. LOL. "

I don't see any other ethnic group breaking their necks to do the same. You do have those who'd rather see their daughters marry the rich and successful of the group if they are hell-bent on marrying outside their own group, but for the most part, they'd rather see them marry someone who's doing well from within the group.

Of course, I could be a complete asshole and flip the script. Since you're so intent on discounting Black men in general while encouraging Black women to date and marry outside of their ethnic group (which there's nothing wrong with in of itself), then I'm pretty sure you won't mind Black men doing the same. Yeah, I have a feeling you don't like that at all.

I had classmates pick on me for "talking White" and having my nose in a book more than slinging hip hop rhymes and "keepin it real". From the looks of things, I handled that a lot better than you did, if your rather defensive comments are anything to go on.

The minimum wage is a deeply flawed idea. All jobs do not have provide sufficient income to support a family. Some people, e.g. teenagers, don't have a family to support. Creating a minimum wage, no matter how small, eliminates some employment opportunities.

The governement has no right to dictate the terms of an employment contract between two free people.

So to hell with you and your dumbass negro tom shit. Your ignorance is the reason young kids have to fight so hard to get out of poverty, well then the way you tell it, poverty doesn't exist its a white race hustler conspiracy!! So who needs a stimulus anyway!!

Sounds like someone got one too many wedges as a kid and have decided to exact vengeance on all those bullied them. What are you, an old Charles Atlas ad from the back of a comic book back? You want to punch some jock in the face for kicking sand in your face?

Like Mack and a probably few others on this blog, I had my fair share of bullies because I was more interested in books and sci-fi than basketball. Hell, my own cousins called 'fag' & 'white boy' for years. But you know what? A lot of those dudes that picked on me I'm cool with today. That's called being an adult and growing up - you get over things and move on.

As a note, here's my challenge to my conservative friends - want to help kids? I'll stop telling them to vote for Dems, you stop passing delusions about 'free market' and conservatism and we all agree to tutor a child. Volunteer for a neighborhood watch or clean up. Work in a soup kitchen.

On the main topic of the minimum wage - for a working class white man align himself with business interests who want to abolish the minimum wage so we can all earn the same salary as a Mexican migrant is just stupid. But there goes the Tea Party and other neo-con Joe Sixpacks - threatening a revolt against the Beige man and his party who fought to get unemployment benefits extended while supporting a cadre of libertarian and outright racist crackpots, backed by the mega-rich, who want to abolish the most basic principle of the labor movement and the simplest benefit to the working man - a fair wage for a day's work.

We get the government we deserve. And if we're collectively dumb enough to let these loons and outright evil cynics near power - we deserve to get our asses kicked.

Free to a degree. Although free, the two agents aren't equal. One has the power of the purse, the other nursing a thirst--the need for a job.

If the one with the thirst had many fountains from which to drink (right now, the employment outlook is dismal), then equality and freedom would be more in alignment. In the case of those who depend on a "minimum wage" for a livelihood, the sheer numbers clamoring for a drink from the few well in existence, would be severely exploited by rapacious and unconscionable employers.

But, from what I can gather from your statement, you'd have no problem with that...which is why the world is going to hell in a Cadillac.

Anon-"The Mexicans also work at the same restaurants so their children won't have to work there. What's more important than Blacks helping out the Mexicans?"

LAA said, "I keep telling them that on this blog, but some don't see it that way. The idea of reciprocation, or future self preservation is at lost here."

LAA, you are the only one on this blog that was moved by my comment with regards to our survival. The others attacked me because I didn't like Oakland and had nothing positive to say about our people there. Isn't that interesting? Mexicans are pushing Blacks out, Blacks there see getting an education as a "white thang". Field and his cronies ignored that. Guess it just ain't important. That is typical black mentality, and it is sickening, sad and pathetic.

Are we the only Blacks on the planet who see this happening?

Funny you should mention helicopters. You have reminded me how I use to hear helicopters in the distant while living in Oakland.

Field, I bet Oakland has Philly beat in black on black crime.

There are more blacks in college and getting professional degress than anytime in this nations history and its growing.

You two are a couple of miserable, bitter, paranoid self-hating wackos.

Unhappy with your own existence and want to project that misery onto the world.

The governement has no right to dictate the terms of an employment contract between two free people.

Sure it does. Because of the government, Two free people can no longer contract to buy or sell slaves. It's called the 13th Amendment.

That's just one example. The point is, the gov has every right to regulate economic activities in this country. Without it, you wind up with a runaway free market that gave us the S&L crisis of the 80's and the sub-prime mortgage crisis that we're still suffering from today.
