"Blackish"

"Tan Years A Slave"? My twitter fam is a hot mess.

But seriously, there is nothing funny about this story. It goes to show you how maddening the issue of race has become in this country.

White folks can't figure out why this confused soul would give up her "white privilege" and all the trappings it brings and choose to be a Negro in America. Just doesn't make sense to them. Which, I am sure, is one of the things that is driving this story.

And black folks, bless our souls, can't really make up our minds about girlfriend, either. I think until the news came out today that she actually sued one of our most revered HBCU schools for reverse discrimination, most black folks were in her corner. Heck she got View love from Whoppi, and that black icon, Dave Chappelle (who speaks wisdom disguised as comedy from behind the mic), was riding with her as well.  Dave says he won't be making any jokes about her because there is something very "nuanced" going on with racism when it comes to her. He says it has something to do with how black and white people view her emotionally.

As is often the case, I agree with Chappelle. Some white people view what she is doing as a racial betrayal. (She is a Wigga!) It's supposed to be the other way around: Blacks wanting to be white and passing themselves off as such; not the other way around. Unless, of course, it was for a social experiment to write a book , to make us laugh at a silly movie for 90 minutes, or to paint our faces black for a frat party to impress our racist alcoholic friends.

So this seemingly serious and normal white woman choosing to go black in such a public way is a conversation starter at the water cooler for sure.

Of course, not all black folks are feeling the Rachel Dolezal switch from lily white to black. Some have written quite eloquently about their own experiences with other Rachel Dolezal types, and others  have weighed in on  how Dolezal can't truly share the experience of being a black woman because it's not as easy as putting on a "pair of shoes".

Ms. Dolezal of course will have her 15 minutes. (Maybe more in her case.) A nice book deal and a high profile sit down interview is sure to follow. ( Hi, Ms. Dolezal, this is Oprah. I was wondering....)

Her book about what it felt like to be a Negro in America for 10 years should be interesting.

We will all get to see her get over this time of confusion and identity crises in her life, and  we will watch her go down to Montana where she will have a heart to heart with her estranged parents and tell them how sorry she is for making them go through all of this.

America will watch it all and shed a collective tear.

And then, once again, all will be white right with the world.

Are you speaking for white folks again?

Did she give up her white privilege? The white in her sued Howard for discrimination.
If stopped by a cop would she identify as Black? Did she label herself Black on credit applications or just employment applications?

No comment about why she needed to report false hate crimes? Just to scare Blacks in retaliation for how badly she was treated at Howard?
What is the purpose of reporting fake hate crimes?

Nothing to see here, move along.

It appears since you have a whole post about her, you are not ready to move along like you suggested a few short hours ago.

I haven't paid attention to this story. It seems over hyped. But sometimes, these kinds of things can reveal something about society. The Jenner sex change was another story that got too much coverage for me, but that did have social significance. It helped transgender people be accepted, or it will help them over time. Sort of like interracial couples helped decrease racism over time. Exposing people to things helps society eventually accept it.

Dear Mr. Limbaugh, If you expose yourself in the park society will not accept it. So your glorious claim is full of holes.

"Did she give up her white privilege? The white in her sued Howard for discrimination. If stopped by a cop would she identify as Black? Did she label herself Black on credit applications or just employment applications?"

She sued Howard before she had her "race-change operation." She was still identifying as white back then.

Who knows why she did it? Maybe black people didn't trust her working on black causes and consequently wouldn't hire/promote her, which is what drove her to sue the school. Later, she hatched her brilliant plan to BE black so black people would never distrust her whiteness again! (This is just wild-ass guesswork on my part.)

And how would she identify as black on a credit application? They don't ask for race. I suppose she could've changed her name to Boomquisha. That might have done it.

"No comment about why she needed to report false hate crimes? Just to scare Blacks in retaliation for how badly she was treated at Howard? What is the purpose of reporting fake hate crimes?"

Again, she probably wanted to make black people sympathize with her and like her, so she made up stories about her persecution by The Man that black people could relate to. Getting black folks to like her seems to have been her main goal in life.

Honestly, neither black nor white people should be mad at her -- they should feel sorry for her. Old girl is completely bonkers. (What do they call this mental illness in which you like black people wayyyyy too much? Kardashian syndrome?)

Whitey's Conspiracy said...

Race is such a subjective and artificial way to categorize people that I kind of enjoy it being subverted. Most of us are such a mix of backgrounds anyway that we somewhat arbitrarily represent ourselves "racially." In any case, there are only 2 so-called "races" that matter in America: black and not black. Other than Ms Dozial's "Reverse Racism" lawsuit, I don't even see that the public has a right to inquire about her "true" "race."

Anonymous said...

Up until 10 years ago she lived as what she was, a white woman with all of the privileges that it affords. Then she sued Howard University for discrimination against whites.

After which she changed her racial identity in order to benefit $$$.

With those same lies she stole a position that might otherwise have gone to a Black woman.

and herself sent 'hate' mail to her place of work.

What exactly is to be applauded about that?

Anonymous said...

"And how would she identify as black on a credit application? They don't ask for race. I suppose she could've changed her name to Boomquisha. That might have done it."

Now this is a racist statement that Rachel would take your ass to court on. Oh wait...the Blacks shut her down, questioned her sincerity in support of the Whites who wanted to stomp on her.

It's not good for ANY White to stand up for Blacks because they won't stand up for you. It's a fact that has been proven over and over again...It's not worth it for a white person to support Blacks. You will never be honored or supported.

That black NAACP member who said, "This has nothing to do with race, it only has to do with 'honesty'"..she was lying through her teeth. The sister is responsible for hurting a ww who genuinely wanted to be Black and fight for the cause. How disgusting.

Field, why don't you post about this side of the equation? I know, you are too afraid to talk about the sister. I always knew you were a chickenshit Jamaican passing in America as an AA.

Someone needs to turn you in.

Anonymous said...

Lilac, you have no right to criticize her. She wanted to be Black and you are pissed that she didn't want to be PR. Leave the woman alone.

Can't all of you FN Negroes see that she is very disturbed and needs some compassion from you? You folks are assholes.

Anonymous said...

"After which she changed her racial identity in order to benefit $$$."

Eh, I doubt very much that her job at the NAACP was some kind of financial jackpot for her. How much could she really have been getting paid working for a social justice nonprofit? Doesn't sound too lucrative to me.

And she could probably have gone to work for the NAACP as a white woman. It's not like they forbid white people to work there, so she's not "stealing" a black person's job. (Although the revelation of her little race-switcheroo escapade has made the Spokane chapter look a bit foolish that they had this strange person leading them. They probably don't appreciate the bad PR.)

What this seems to have been about for her was acceptance. But why would she go to such extremes to make black people like her? That's the real question. I guess no one told her that it is actually possible to have black friends and appreciate black culture and even to work on anti-racist causes without pulling an Al Jolson for an entire decade.

I'm waiting for the TV movie. Maybe she'll explain it all. Ought to be interesting.

That's because "White folks" don't understand the trappings of black privilege.

Rachel Dolezal as a private citizen she can pretend to be black all she wants, but it's her deceitful lying, her willful deception of her true identity to attain job positions, college entrance, etc, live in society as someone she is not that calls into question, not just her ethical credibility, let alone any legal misconduct, but her mental faculties.

Psychologically speaking, this is part and parcel to affects of liberal indoctrination, which creates cultists, fanatics, etc, people who become obsessed, delusional with being something they are not.

You can bond emotionally, physically with anyone, any entity, and so on all you want, but to deny your own identity, and take on a false identity borders on psychological disorder.

Rachel Dolezal faked hate crimes. Her lies were like a weapon .She used them to bash Republicans and non-blacks. Rachel Dolezal created division and hurt the cause she claims to champion.

No that she is being investigated, i suspect other crimes will come to light.

I think Whitey's Conspiracy has it about right. This is and almost always has been a diverse country where a lot of ethnic, racial, and nationalist elements mix and mingle w/out much in the way of restrictions and even in the face of them. It's long past time we gave up the purity fiction and accepted the reality that we're all basically mutts and that that's something to embrace. We gain far more than we lose.

"Race is such a subjective and artificial way to categorize people that I kind of enjoy it being subverted."

Amen to that, and you can add that it's true of most other elements of profiling as well.

Limpbaugh said...

You hear a lot of white people trying to sound black in music. Some people are good at it, like Janis Joplin and Robert Plant. They were both influenced by Etta James but so were black artists like Beyonce. Talent transcends race. There have been hits by white people trying to sound like Jon Lee Hooker who weren't good at it. They don't put as much of their own voices into it. And there are white people who do that on their instruments. Some of them copy old music that was limited by the resources available at the time. It's nice when people keep the elements of old music that were good, but modernize it. A recording artist friend of mine says some white people get it, but white people think about what they are playing too much. Over all though, if you consider multiple genres of music, race doesn't effect how well people play instruments. Using examples of singers, Steve Winwood and the guy from Blind Melon are good white singers who sing in their own voices, but nobody is Al Green. Just as Stevie Ray Vaughn isn't Jimi Hendrix. I don't think the rule is carved in stone as much as it was ten years ago, but there are blues clubs in Chicago that don't like to hire bands fronted by white people. Tourists come from all over the world and they want to see authentic Chicago blues. There are plenty of white sidemen playing in those clubs though. I used to do that. I sounded best when I mixed some white 70's rock influences in with the black music.

Of course, people with money and power can do and get away with anything.

In this case, do you agree with Virgina that Rachael's parents were racist?

anotherbozo said...

Donezal should have become understandable when we learned that she was raised with three adopted, black brothers. It was a matter of identifying, of wanting to be or growing to be, like them. And then she married a black man, another clue. People join weird sects and churches for similar reasons, needing to belong, wanting to serve a cause, have a readymade purpose in life.

I bet the first reporter to interview the parents found out about the brothers but didn't include that fact in his report because the story would have greater legs without it.

By the way, John Howard Griffiths, author of "Black Like Me," took a drug that wore off. His skin wasn't permanently changed.

It's interesting about identity as of late. Caitlyn Jenner born with male parts identifies as a woman. Now Rachel identifies as a black person. What is the different? I don't have an opinion, but more questions. Are we who we because of what society labels as, or do we as individuals? Does Rachel feel she is more connected to black cultural than white aesthetic? I'm going to use a pun; it's not exactly black and white. However, many people see through the prism because it's easy as you don't have to think about it. It's a reason for the usage of stereotypes as we can size up people in less than 20 seconds by using previous knowledge of generalizing. Caitlyn and Rachel are upsetting the order of things. We can't place label them as they turned the corner and decided to label themselves as they feel who they are. The they don't want to conform and it's bothering people. I have an older cousin, mid-seventies who told me that she didn't like this thing about Caitlyn Jenner. I commented that it was not for us to like or dislike. I think it was self-absorbed to make such as declaration as she has no control over someone's else life. It's not for me to like or dislike Rachel's decision to identify as a black person. Although, I am thinking about a different interruption of Hans Christian Anderson' Ugly Duckling story with Caitlyn and Rachel in mind.
