Barack and the field Negroes.

I recently read an interesting article from Seke Ballard about Barack Obama, and he had this among other things to say:

"In the Presidential race the Democratic front-runner is a charismatic, bright and well-achieved man who has garnered the tacit support of arguably the most intelligent publication in all of Europe, The Economist, and a substantial number of American voters. Oddly enough, black Americans don’t fall into the mass of supporters itching to cast their ballots for Barack Obama. The most obvious question is why? And, however unfortunate, the most obvious answer is because of the oft-referenced ‘crab mentality’ of blacks. A credible theory that explains crab mentality among blacks points to the division of work during slavery. Generally stated, there was a strong positive correlation between how light a slave was and the likelihood that they would work in the house as maids, butlers and/or cooks - instead of being in the field with darker slaves. Typically, those who worked closer to the owners in the home were privy to better food, clothing, shelter and overall treatment. For this reason, domesticated slaves were often more accommodating to whites and accepting of their subordinate status as blacks in society. The result was a mixture of jealousy and hatred of the so-called "house Negroes" by the so-called 'field Negroes.' "

Seke, you are wrong. The field Negro is not a "crab," and he only envied the house Negro's position because of the physical comfort it brought him. For instance, while his ass was in the house with all its comforts, and the assuage that comes with it; the poor field Negro was out in the fields working his ass off in the burning sun and living in constant pain from either being whipped, or from the pain that hard work brings. There was no envy of the house Negro's looks or his smarts (Although house Negroes today would have you believe that there is). And the field Negro did not envy the house Negro's stake in the house, because the field Negro knew then, and does now, that the house Negro has no greater stake in the house than he does.

Now you are right that the "domesticated slave" or the house Negro is more accepting of his subordinate role in society. And this, I submit to you, is another reason the field Negro takes issue with him. The field Negro sees the potential the house Negro has and he is disappointed because the house Negro is not maximizing it and using it to his (or his races) advantage.

Which brings me back to Mr. Obama. I don't think field Negroes see him as a house Negro, because we know that his heart is in the right place. --And the crap about him being born in another country and therefore he cannot share the African American experience, is just bull shit rethuglican talking points being used to divide and torpedo his campaign--- But to be honest, Obama isn't moving us either, and his campaign isn't gaining traction in the fields. In truth, Obama will never get mass appeal until he starts appealing to the field Negro. But he is afraid, because he mistakenly believes that by trying to appeal the field Negro he will alienate "charlie".

"...the field Negroes, once again, have been sippin’ on their Haterade®. They've established this unreasonable idea of blackness that punishes balanced and long-term political perspective that is rightfully not militantly pro-black and opportunistic. However, paradoxically, this same critical group of people rewards reverends with perms, over-sized egos and rhetoric that could put Mother Goose to shame. Just as during slavery, a person’s blackness is being called into question for largely invalid reasons. The result is an unfortunate illustration of how blacks continue to perpetuate their own mental enslavement. My advice: if you happen to be a field Negro, take a step back and analyze exactly why you don’t support Obama."

Wrong again Seke, "Haterade" is a drink I know nothing about; and I think most other field Negroes feel the same way. You should know better, but I will tell you anyway: we do not reward Reverend Inc. for anything, although we do appreciate what they try to do at times. And with all due respect, or minds are quite free.

Finally, we are not cool towards Barack because he isn't black enough. We are cool on him because he doesn't seem genuine enough, and he fucks up every time he has a chance to show us that he is. Memo to Barak: If you can't put away the "ice Queen" with a royal bitch slap, how can you expect to deal with these rethuglicans out here and the rest of red state A-merry-ca? Folks that would have the field Negro back in the fields quicker than you can say Mississippi. Yes, a "balanced and long- term political perspective" is fine if you are teaching a political science class, but out here in this fucked up environment known as A-merry-ca, we just don't have time to wait for all of that to happen.

"My advice: if you happen to be a field Negro, take a step back and analyze exactly why you don't support Obama."

............OK, self analysis done, and I think I just gave it to you.

Hey,

What happened to the Patio?

Barack doesn't have to worry about the Field Negroes...they are NOT the ones who are stabbing him in the back.

To be blunt, they are very up front and honest about their skepticism about his candidacy. You know where you stand with Field Negroes. At least the ones around the web, he does.

And, even with their skepticism, in the end, if they don't vote for Kusinich, I have a feeling, they'll vote for him for the Black Nationalist reason.

The folks that this guy is talking about are the HOUSE NEGROES.

Without hesitation, THESE are the folks selling out Obama, and most of them are doing it behind his back. Smiling in his face, but all the while working to undermine him behind his back.

The Patio Negroes can go either way, though. Some support him openly, some are against him openly. Some are just waiting to make up their minds.

But, the author is critical of the wrong group. The Field Negroes are the most open about their feelings about Obama. He KNOWS where he stands with them. And, I'll go a step further; they are very honest on what he has to do in order to win them over. Now, whether or not he does it, is his decision, but there is no mystery for him with this group.

When the knives go into his back, be assured, not one of them will have a Field Negro's fingerprints on it.

For the sake of brevity, I won't deal with any crabs-in-a-barrel-colorism nonsense and say black people are not enthusiastic about supporting Mr. Obama for three specific, and logical reasons.

1: He does not forcefully speak to issues that are especially critical to black people: About the violence that's tearing our community apart; About the huge number of black men in prison; About chronic poverty and his plan to do something about it; About the failure of the US government to assist blacks and poor people to get back to New Orleans and rebuild; About wage discrimination; About white employers-- corporate or small-- who increasingly refuse to hire black people, especially black men (Lots of documentation show this).

2: Mr. Obama makes stupid political mistakes that even Ray would see as-- let us say-- "born to lose." Examples include his hook-up with anti-gay gospel singer McClurkin, giving the impression that he is willing to sellout gay people for the black, christian, homophobic vote; and his stance on social security, suggesting that he is willing to compromise what economist Paul Krugman calls the "crown jewel" of programs and the best thing people got going for them when they get old, and the program poor-hating Republicans have been trying to get rid of since its inception.

3. The party to which he belongs has a few good people in it, but, at its core, is just cowardly, opportunistic and anti-working people. Why they let an idiotic, lameduck president with a rating lower than the integrity of professional wrestling bitch-slap them like a pimp dogging out prostitutes in his "stable" on a Saturday night.

What's really behind Seke's article? That, because we black folk don't fall in and march like nazi storm trooper to the polls to vote for Obama, we are stupid. He hides this by saying Mr. Obama is black, charming and intelligent. Hey, every pimp I know are black, charming and intelligent. Should I urge my young Sistahs to hook up with him?

Seke: GTFOH!!!

As a Republican who is really an Independent (Right, Negro), I am still supporting Obama for President. I would not vote for Hillary even if she was the only candidate running for office.

Sidebar: A Negro is still a Negro whether you are in the house or in the field. It just do not matter. Trust me.

The only early primary that matters with a significant number of Negroes is in South Carolina. I have not seriously considered any candidates, because it could make no difference unless they can stay in the race til I get to vote.

I had been engaged in Jesse Jackson's campaign, and soon as he was accumulating real delegates, all of a sudden Al Gore became a force. America realized that they really could not have a black candidate for president. Jesse Jackson had enough delegates. Had he been white he could have maneuvered the rest of the delegates.

Or course this is many years later and things may be different, but I am not getting invested just yet. However, at present there is no particular message that stands out from Barrack Obama. I am looking for his vision of the future. When he gets to my primary, I can look up his policy proposals.

I like Obama, but I don't think he'd be a good president. He;d be better suited as a diplomat, or maybe White House Press Secretary. He has the capability to bring the house down with speeches, but doesn't do it as often as he should.

I'm not black, so I probably have no business even weighing in on this blog entry, but I will anyway.

When Obama declared, I was so thrilled. For starters, he isn't a member of the Bush family and he isn't a Clinton. He is a self-made man and didn't have it handed to him by his daddy or his husband. He's smart, accomplished and his beautiful wife, Michelle and 2 kids made me think of John F. Kennedy and his family 40 years ago.

My blog was all about Obama. I bought and wore Obama 2008 T-shirts and chatted him up to everyone, everywhere I went.

Then, Donnie McClurkin happened and Obama started talking out of both sides of his mouth. I felt angry and I felt let down. Barack, in opinion, sold the LGBT community down the river Denial, and I can't get past it.

But I'm going to make a prediction. I think Obama has a very good chance of beating Hillary in Iowa and if he does, he has a very good chance of beating her nationally. Despite CNN and Wolf Blitzer and the agenda of AIPAC and the military, industrial complex.

I can forgive the Donnie McClurkin mess if he can shut down Hillary. I am so fucking sick and tired of the Bushes and Clintons treating the presidency like its their family business.

I want new people and new blood in the White House.

Folks, if we read christopher's comments, we can get a really good insight why Obama is blowing it.

Although, quite frankly, I still think Chris represents the minority view point white people. I just think there are too many A-merry-cans who will not vote for a candidate because of his race.

mac, you put it down my brotha. I swear Obama ought to sign you up right now with his campaign. I co-sign with everything you and rikyrah said.

AIPAC's Queen has mounted a whispering campaign about an alleged scandal involving Barack and guess who is pushing it?

Even though I'm disappointed by Barack and the Donnie McClurkin mess, I would vote for him over Hillary in a hot, New York minute.

While I thought it was wrong to invite McClurkin, once the mistake was done, Obama should have just told folks that he didn't agree with him, but that he had to stay.

Chris, you don't want to hear it, but McClurkin's views were more in line with the voters of South Carolina than Obama's, who has, on more than one occasion, spoken up, in front of Black audiences about homophobia.

And, I ask this question, and folks don't want to seem to answer it:

What DEMOCRAT, PERIOD, is going to WIN without the votes of those Church Goers?

Oh, yeah, that's right...

NONE OF THEM.

I was pissed at the White LG community for acting like Obama was some raging homophobe, when his voting record CLEARLY indicates otherwise.

And, for them to be so delusional as to think that ANY Democrat is going to win without those Bible Thumping Black Folk not only in South Carolina, and the South, but throughout this country.

His mistake was paying any attention to the LG community after he had put out the statement that he didn't agree with McClurkin. That should have been the end of it. He should have told them to look at his record and go somewhere and sit down.

haha. true. and mac basically summed up all my feelings. i just need to add two things:

1 - the reason i'm "cool" on obama is not because of his negro status, house or otherwise. it is because he was my senator and he did not manage to impress me as being a "good" one, so i have no reason to think he'd be a good president either.

2 - while i'm mad at rikyrah about that last post, i'll let it go in favor of his earlier one: if so-called "field negros" were really going to put their vote where their mouth is, so to speak, we'd all be voting for kucinich and we all know it. the only reason people aren't voting for him is because they know he won't win. i hope no one is naive enough to think that barack is more down for the people... if we want to really talk about the dilemma facing negroes of all kinds around this time of year, we could maybe start talking about how all the candidates who do take firm stands on "our" issues are considered somewhat of a joke.

"What DEMOCRAT, PERIOD, is going to WIN without the votes of those Church Goers?" -Rickyrah

The answer: A black leader. Here's something people may not know: The black, christian homophobes are not as solidly homophobic as people think. They know deep-down that Jesus accepted everybody, which is why he said, "Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone." They know they have a gay cousin or someone gay in their own families; and they are posed to have their minds changed by a person who attacks homophobic nonsense in a bold way, in their church, in their own backyard. That's backbone, that's leadership, something black people are really waiting to see from him.

So what if he doesn't win South Carolina? Sometimes one has to go all-out and chalk it up the rest as an invest in posterity.

Obama needs to go to a rally like the one for the Jenna 6, take the microphone from Jessie or Al and speak passionately for black kids being railroaded by white bigoted attorneys. That's the way to get some street cred in the field. That's the way to get the deacons who sometimes sneak downstairs to take a nip or two, and the old black ladies who wear hats with fruit on it on Sundays to brave a cold winter's day and vote for you.

Dear Mr. Obama: A little free advice from a consultant who works in the field:

Love you, bro, but, for Christ sakes, be bold! Stop petting and start boning. If you do, then even drug addicts and prostitutes will rise before noon and pull a lever for you (before pulling something else).

Be bold, Mr. Obama Call that sneaky, double-talkig Hillary and her husband out for starting NAFTA and making jobs leave my community and you'll have this field negro's vote. Love u.

The answer: A black leader.

We have ONE Senator, ONE Governor, and the rest are elected from somewhat secure Black districts.

My point also was that THOSE church goers aren't just in South Carolina, or even only in the South. They are all over the country, and you know it.

I didn't want to turn this into a Black/Gay thing, but the polls don't lie.

Question:

DO you believe that there should be discrimination against Gays and Lesbians in the areas of JOBS and HOUSING?

Answer:

Over 68% answer NO

Question:

Do you believe homosexuals and lesbians should be allowed to marry?

Answer:

Over 68% answer NO

THESE are the positions of the Black community, and we don't seem to have a conflict with those positions.

ARE anti-gay and Lesbian positions at the top of our agenda?

No.

But, to not admit that it is there, very much there, just doesn't do us well.

Black folk just have much more pressing problems. It's not a rabid homophobia, but it's there.

You are right; we all know the church director, and the uncle or cousin that never married, and, they are usually welcome in our homes.

We take the position of ' love the sinner, hate the sin'.

We DO NOT define our Christianity, unlike the White Evangelicals, so narrowly. Our Christianity is far broader, which is why the White Evangelicals have not truly been able to make a serious dent in this ' coalition of the value voters' that they wanted to make.

My point with Obama is, he has consistently gotten up in front of Black folk talking about this issue. And his voting record speaks for him on these issues.

I honestly cannot believe we're still buying into this 'rake power ritual' called voting.

I'm not being unrealistic or obtuse here we are still operating under an electoral system that was designed generations ago and informed by a system that counted Barrak as 3/5's a person. We know what happened the last 2 elections and yet we get all geeked up because we have a 'colored face in an imperial place'.

I just find it sad. If I was going to vote Kucinich would be my choice, but until this ish is one person one vote and we have 'checks and balances' restored...I'm not playing a rigged game. That's just not very smart or productive from where I sit.

And do not give me that old tired line about 'if you don't vote, you can't complain'. That's garbage and reinforces that the fake power you've been granted via the vote is doing exactly what it's designed to...make you feel like part of the process when it's obvious you're not. Look at the polls where the war or health care is concerned, where the majority (fields and houses)actually agree and the power elite that you 'voted' for do NOTHING about it.

Barrak fits in beautifully with this game so if you're juiced because he's set for a possible historical win at this 'game' then you might deserve exactly what you get. Onware to Iran....oh the dollar drops...oh Africa has 'oil war's...oh kids are getting fatter...oh more cancer.

Keep doing the same thing over and over and getting the same result..... Keep this 'electoral' system and we're all INSANE.

Without getting into the politics of polls. But as a person who has been involved in developing them, let's just say they can be subtlely "adjusted" to more or less achieve the outcome you desire. But i'll trust you. So about 60% of black christians are homophobic and 40% are not. Fine, but does that mean the 60% can't be changed, especially when many of their relatives are gay, when their own bible tells them to love everybody?

You are right, the issue is bigger than gay rights. To me, it's about Obama. And I'm saying black folks haven't warmed up to Obama because he hasn't shown them very much. He especially hasn't shown consistent leadership on gay or any other issues. It's just bad campaigning to go gay rights rah rah rah and hang out with Larry Craig McClurkin. It's bad leadership to give passionate speeches and then not show up and give a kickass, sho-nuff down-home sermon about protecting our balck boys from being railroaded to prison by southern bigot. I'm saying the gay issue is only one of many issues where Mr. Obama has not distinguished himself from Sen. Clinton and worse yet, hasn't shown black people that he would lead the fight to help them once he becomes president.

Why is this so important? Because, in contrast to what these swine-eating house negroes, we field negroes watch how so-called leaders treat other classes of people, both at work, at the mall, and on tv. If a person makes a racist joke about Polish or Jews, they say, "I wonder what that asshole says about black folk when we're not around." We do the same with politicians, especially ones we don't know. And, if a politician is not known, he or she better come off as strong on issues related to certain classes or he or she will not get their respect.

That brings us back to Obama. He does not appear to fight consistently for gay folks or black folks or for the poor in general.

To give a contrast, Sen. Edwards has distinguished himself from Sen. Clinton by attacking her for being ambivalent and ambiguous on just about everything; and he has bet his entire campaign on the fight against poverty. He may not win with it, but at least we know what he stands for and who he claims to be fighting for. I'm sure you've seen him in New Orleans, in the 9th ward and, with black folks and torned-down houses in the background, raking Bush over the coals for failing to help Katrina victims like yesterday. This situation was ripe for Obama, but he allowed a rich white boy who gets $400 haircuts beat him to it. Instead, he went all over the country telling white people how he was coming like the Lone Ranger to give them hope.

I'm saying Obama could turn all that around by speaking consistently to the issues. Like Edwards, he needs to find an issue or two that reaches all Americans BUT TO THE VERY SOUL OF BLACK AMERICA and fight like a rabies-infested dog for it.

I'm saying stop whining and show up to earn my vote. Otherwise, I'm thinking you're just frontin for a sorry ass democratic party like several of my previous employers: hire me last, first me first.

Rickyrah: Here's my prediction: BEFORE FEBRUARY, Sen. Obama will fire at least half of his campaign strategist and consult more with some of our traditional African American leaders like Congressman John Lewis or Maxine Waters. The main reason is that he will have been running a campaign for years and people will still not know what he stands for. But by then, it will have been too late.

Field, do you think that all those hard working field hands would've changed places in a nano second with those house servants if asked?

Would they then, since they "see the potential" of this new position, "maximize" it to his race's advantage? Or, would he do as the thousands before him, become a house negro and protect his stake?

Don't we see this all over the world? In most non-western counties it is just a minority ethnicity, class or thugs that are ruling the entire county. With all the fields just wanting to get in the house.

So Barack is supposed to "bitch slap" Hillary on national TV? I wonder how the race/gender politics would've played out on that one. Edwards already got dissed by the media for checking her and he's a white man. Hillary's arrogance makes me want to vomit -- she thinks I'm going to vote for her just because she's a woman. She needs to be Secretary of State since she thinks she knows everything there is about foreign policy.

Barack is still my man. I don't really care if he does well in a debate. And I don't need him to make me some empty campaign offices. George Bush did okay in debates. made his grand speeches, and look how he turned out.

Oh, and Kucinich has balls--who else says "Impeach Cheney" in a debate!

Anonymous said...

I like the post and I agree that Obama's lack of support has nothing to do with his "blackness."

In my opinion he is too measured in his words and that makes him seem weak to me.

We need balls right now. The right kinds of balls, not fake balls like Bush in a cowboy hat.

That's where that "bitch slap" comment comes from. I feel you man.

Its a term, and it has nothing to do with physical abuse or intolerance or hostility. Its that sometimes we need gender polarity, where a woman is a woman and a man is a man.

An example is what happened to Dukakis when Bernard Shaw asked him if he would still be against capital punishment if someone raped and murdered his wife, Kitty.

He gave a long-winded intellectual answer, when what he could have said was "Bernie, I would kill the muthaf*cka myself, and then we wouldn't need a death penalty."

This would have been a "bitch slap" response. Everyone would have understood. But instead he lost everyone because his words were too measured.

Meanwhile, I wish Hillary would show up as more of a divine feminine energy, because I think the country and world needs that, rather than an arrogant, tasky, smug, and clever intellectual.

She's all in her head, and not in her heart. We need humanity, especially from a woman.

She too seems weak for the opposite reason, that she doesn't seem to trust her own feminine powers. Well, who can blame her?

Anyway, that's what we need, in my opinion.
