Ohio Prayers.

Snow snow snow, and more snow. A brotha couldn't even go to the plantation today.

Anywhooo, a lot of you have been sending me e-mails about the case in Ohio where the African American mother was jailed, fined, and given probation for sending her children to a predominantly white school. I wanted to look at the case a little more before commenting, because things in A-merry-ca are not always as black and white as they first seem.

Folks who know me know that I part company with most of my ideological soul-mates when it comes to school choice. It's one of the few issues where I usually find myself arguing from the right side of my brain. I truly believe that a good education is one of the true equalizers in A-merry-can society, and if our public schools are failing I want our children to get a good education wherever they can.

When I saw the story about this poor lady being punished for trying to get the best for her children it gave me cause for a pause. I am a lawyer, and I respect the law. And, to be honest, Kelley Williams-Bolar did technically break the law by lying about her residency. But Kelley-Williams-Bolar, like any good parent, just wanted the best for her children; so she did what she felt she had to do to get her daughters into a better school. It's that simple.

Sometimes judges have to use common sense from the bench. And this judge down in Ohio did not do that. I dare say that the punishment did not fit the crime. A judge should always look at the totality of the circumstances before handing out a sentence, and this judge clearly did not do that. Or did she? Maybe the judge was just following the will of her affluent constituents. (Do they elect judges in Ohio?) I also have to wonder what triggered this little investigation into Kelley Williams-Bolar's background. ("Oh oh, here comes field with the racial angle.") Why would the school district hire a private investigator to follow the lady to see where she dropped off her daughters? --That was a rhetorical question. I know why. Akron, that is not cool.
Anyway, my question to the wingnuts would be this: Why the silence on this issue? I thought that you were all for school choice? Why is this story only getting folks outraged on the left? Hey,when it comes to school choice I am all in with you wingnuts; so why am I alone on this one? Where is the wingnut love?

The tragedy in all of this is that our public school system has become so bad that parents who want the best for their children have to make these tough choices. This poor woman lived in a housing project, and she clearly knew that she was taking a risk by lying about her residency to get her daughters into a better school. But she took it. True field Negro behavior if you ask me.
For those of you who believe in such things please pray for this lady. She needs all the help she can get. And, sadly, her daughters now do as well.

I guess you expect me to be on my P's and Q's with your little threat and all.

Nah.......fuck you.

It was never about finding intelligence...Lee is idolized and Grant is denigrated. Who, exactly, won again?
What about the test-preps for rich kids? Does that not skew results? How about the fakeSpecial kids who get extra time and attempts?
Instead of comparing poor, disadvantaged AfAms to Harvard Scholarship Winners...how about picking up the poor white kids who have unbranching family trees? I believe you will find similar problems. In response, I posted google links to a dozen academic studies addressing this question.

You nitwits claim you know things yet you're always totally ignorant about the subjects you say are dear to your hearts.

That's part of the black problem.

Then you ask:

...how about picking up the poor white kids who have unbranching family trees? I believe you will find similar problems.

You've got a true talent for making yourself look dumb.

Here's a revelation for you:

substance-abusing, dysfuntional "family" structure is bad for the kids.

I am not weeping over idiot whites who destroy their own lives and the futures of their kids through their dysfunction. The idiots have screwed themselves. What more is there to say?

However, as we know, poor academic performance is not a direct outcome of living in a low-income family.

Money helps. But, as they say, it will not make a silk purse of a sow's ear.

The father of one of my high school classmates was a janitor in a small New England town. My classmate was accepted at West Point, served in the Army as a tank commander, went to Cornell Business school and today is a bank president in the midwest.

Van's the Man said...

Our Community Organizer in Chief will grind the rest of us under the heel of ObamaCare, but not his union friends:

"Yesterday, the Deparment of Health and Human Services announced it had granted more than 500 new waivers to Obamacare's requirement that health plans have annual limits of no less than $750,000. This annual limit requirement climbs to $1.25 million next year and then to $2 million.

The reason these exemptions from the law are needed is that Obamacare forces all health insurance consumers to over-insure themselves and pay high premiums as a result. Without the waivers, many companies, non-profits and unions would simply drop their health plans. As of 2014, the waivers will no longer be available…

It is worth noting that there are 166 union benefits funds now exempted from this requirement, which account for about 40 percent of the exempted workers. This means that - although there are only 14.6 million unionized employees in the United States, and since 860,000 of them were already exempted from this provision of Obamacare - more than 50% of all the workers exempted are union members!

Again, maybe LAC could explain why, if Obamacare is so great, everyone who supports Obama gets expempted from complying with the provisions?

Maybe because the whole purpose of the Healthcare Bill was to incrementally make private health insurance univiable so that the people would be ground down into accepting a complete government takeover. Ya think?

Unions will destroy America as surely as they destroyed Detroit if Obama has his way. That's why they need to be kept healthy by sparing them from trauma as ObamaCare is used to bankrupt the private health sector.

Dont forget that by presidential executive order, these union heads are now in charge of federal regulatory agencies and are exempt from freedom of information acts. Why would Obama put union cronies in charge of federal agencies and then sign an executive order denying the public any knowledge of what they do. Simple, complete takeover of congress and senate. Laws wont pass because they are crazy and the public is against them, then put them out via federal regulations.

Every public school in NY City offers FREE test prep. SAT prep. ACT prep. Everything.

However, now I see where you're going. You think it's possible to spend your way to a high score on SATs, ACTs, etc.

Bad news for you, moldy. Test review helps, and definitely can boost scores -- a little. But no one at the bottom is going to the top.

Top colleges publish the stats of the kids they accept.

The average math SAT at MIT is about 750. Therefore, if you really want to get into MIT your score should be close to 750.

Thus, if a student scored 700 on his math portion, he might want to take a review course and shoot for a 750. But going from 700 to 750 is very, very tough.

Moreover, it's very easy to trace people through the Social Security Death Index. If you knew the state in which the victim died and his date of death, you could probably find him. If you had his name, you'd quickly find everything else.

The Obama administration has touted community colleges as the one institution in higher education that can best adapt to the nation's economic realities and still deliver the education and training Americans so desperately need.

During a 2009 speech, President Obama promised $12 billion for community colleges. But they never saw any of that money because the president couldn't sell his plan to Congress.

Now the ongoing cuts in state funding for higher education are so deep that community colleges are struggling to deliver the very services they've been praised for.

Public school has always had critics. But we now have for the first time a movement to eliminate public education. We have never in our history had a strong push to privatize a large piece of the public education system. And when you have it coming from the Oval Office, that's different.

Obama and Arne Duncan have completely aligned themselves with the Jack Welches and Joel Kleins. There's this idea that teachers are the enemy. Everybody has drunk the Kool-Aid, because if you want to keep your job, you walk the walk. It's doing a really good job of stigmatizing public education.

alicia banks said...

The Obama education reform plan is an aggressive version of the Bush administration's No Child Left Behind, under which many schools have narrowed their curriculum to the tested subjects of reading and math. This poor substitute for a well-rounded education, which includes subjects such as the arts, history, geography, civics, science and foreign language, hits low-income children the hardest, since they are the most likely to attend the kind of "failing school" that drills kids relentlessly on the basics. Emphasis on test scores already compels teachers to focus on test preparation. Holding teachers personally and exclusively accountable for test scores -- a key feature of Race to the Top -- will make this situation even worse. Test scores will determine salary, tenure, bonuses and sanctions, as teachers and schools compete with each other, survival-of-the-fittest style.

Frustrated by a chronic lack of progress, business leaders and politicians expect that a stern dose of this sort of competition and incentives will improve education, but they are wrong. No other nation is taking such harsh lessons from the corporate sector and applying them to their schools. No nation with successful schools ignores everything but basic skills and testing. Schools work best when teachers collaborate to help their students and strive together for common goals, not when they compete for higher scores and bonuses.

Having embraced the Republican agenda of choice, competition and accountability, the Obama administration is promoting the privatization of large segments of American education and undermining the profession of teaching. This toxic combination is the latest Big Idea in education reform. Like so many of its predecessors, it is not likely to improve education.

mareally hobama in bleached drag:

like hobama, u have no honor, no soul, and no clue!

Four: The most blatant hypocrisy involves Obama's personal parental decisions. He chose to send his own daughters to Sidwell Friends, a private school among D.C.'s most exclusive institutions whose annual tuition runs around $30,000. If he felt so strongly that offering children an exit route would stymie the reform of public schools, then why not put his own daughters in one? Jimmy Carter did. This would not only please unions--prompting them to open up their war chest even more in the next elections--but also signal his resolve about reform. If he didn't, that's presumably because his daughters' futures are too precious to be sacrificed on the altar of politics. But, evidently, the futures of other children are not.

Incidentally, among the children who will have to return to public school once this program is scrapped are two of his daughter's schoolmates, who were using their vouchers to attend Sidwell. It's sad that Obama's message of hope and change doesn't include children like them.

I am a teacher in Florida.
I am told that every student in my realm must score on or above grade level on the FCAT each year. Never mind their learning discrepancies, their unstable home lives, their prior learning experiences. In the spring, they are all assessed with one measure and if they don’t fit, I have failed. Students walk through my doors reading at a second grade level and by year’s end can independently read and comprehend early 4th grade texts, but this is no matter. One of my students has already missed 30 school days this year, but that is overlooked. If they don’t perform well on this ONE test in early March, their learning gains are irrelevant. They didn’t learn enough. They didn’t grow enough. I failed them. In the three months that remain in the school year after this test, I am expected to begin teaching 5th grade curriculum to my 4th grade students so that they are prepared for next year’s test.

I am expected to differentiate my instruction to meet the needs of my 24 learners. Their IQs span 65 points, and I must account for every shade of gray. I must challenge those above grade level, and I must remediate those below. I am but one person within the classroom, but I must meet the needs of every learner. I generate alternate assessments to accommodate for these differences. My higher math students receive challenge work, and my lower math students receive one-on-one instruction. I create most of these resources myself, after-hours and on weekends. I print these resources so that every child in my room has access to the same knowledge, delivered at their specific level. Yesterday, the school printer that I share with another teacher ran out of ink. Now I must either purchase a new ink cartridge for $120, or I cannot print anything from my computer for the remainder of the year. What choice am I left with?
I went to school at one of the best universities in the country and completed undergraduate and graduate programs in Education. I am a master of my craft. I know what effective teaching entails, and I know how to manage the curriculum and needs of the diverse learners in my full inclusion classroom. I graduated at the top of my class and entered my first year of teaching confident and equipped to teach effectively. Sadly, I am now being micro-managed, with my instruction dictated to me. I am expected to mold “out-of-the-box” thinkers while I am forced to stay within the lines of the instructional plans mandated by policy-makers. I am told what I am to teach and when, regardless of the makeup of my students, by decision-makers far away from my classroom or even my school. The message comes in loud and clear that a group of people in business suits can more effectively determine how to provide exemplary instruction than I can. My expertise is waved away, disregarded, and overlooked. I am treated like a day-laborer, required to follow the steps mapped out for me, rather than blaze a trail that I deem more appropriate and effective for my students—students these decision-makers have never met.

Mold, I concur. As I stated before -- the whole push for school vouchers and charter schools is mostly driven by the idea that a) we only need workers smart enough to fight our wars, make our lattes without burning themselves or work at Wal-Mart and b) to funnel money into the pockets of ideological fellow travelers who make a killing the for profit education business.

If you're in IT and have met a DeVry or U of Phoenix graduate and wonder "what the hell do they teach these guys about computers?" then you know the horror awaiting us all in school privatization.

Alicia, I actually agree with you -- school vouchers and charter schools are at best band-aids for gunshot wound we call American education. That being said, we can't do the same old, same old. Until we take a critical analysis of how we educate our nation and call for real reforms other than "we needs mo' money" progressives and activists on the Left don't have a leg to stand on.

LAC this was definitely worth repeating. You and AB have revealed the sneaky secrets behind the direction of education policy.

I know you think I am a dreamer but these folks only look out for the bottom line and the only real change will occur when the people see through the crap like they are doing in Egypt and decide they want a government that actually looks out for their best interest and not just the interest of big business.

As simple as it sounds we have to borrow from what other successful countries have done on the education front. And the other solution is that we have to put pressure on the government to take education of our children as seriously as they do prosecuting their unjust wars.

You are partly right LAC reformers have to push for systemic change, right now this government lacks the "will" to educate all of our children. We have to demand that it (the government) prioritize education.

Until we take a critical analysis of how we educate our nation and call for real reforms other than "we needs mo' money" progressives and activists on the Left don't have a leg to stand on."

You guys are funny, These schools are trade schools set up to teach the underachievers who could not cut it in real school or dropped out.... a trade.

And they're crappy at even doing that, Anon. Like most right wing lurkers, learn a few facts about these for profit "colleges" before you open your mouth. For example, did you know many of these corporate universities claim to train nurses, but offer no clinical rotation?

My advice to any IT person who want to get a skill, skip DeVry and go to community college, you're more likely to learn something and its a whole lot cheaper.

Mr. LACoincidental,

Please cease and desist slandering DeVry university and/or its subsidiaries immediately or I'll sue your black ass so hard you'll have to take out a loan to buy you a 40 oz.

Sincerely,

Really LAC? Every time I have asked you an adult question you dodged it. Let me expand moron. This has nothing to do with politics. Lowlifes who make excuses for the majority of their life, who are led and listen to people like you about how they are victims and do nothing to personally change things, one day suddenly find since they dropped out of HS, can barely speak english, punctuating each sentence with, ya know wut Im sayin my nigga, suddenly wake up in someones house living off their parents or girlfriends parents who say, get yo self a job boy and then they go to these "Schools" because no one else will have them. That is why they go to these crappy schools.

Not everyone can be a mamas boy like you and live off their parents who put them through the nice community college, or they too old for that shit.

Your a little boy who is obviously still learning the world but spouting from a very ill informed position.

Mr. Anon -
So, because someone wakes up and wants to do better with their lives, they should be forced to scammed by con men? Our government (meaning you the taxpayer) should be bilked of millions propping up these worthless diploma mills? You're a piece of work.

Again, research and learn.
Here's a synopsis of the rip off that is the for-profit college industry.

Simply put -- without our federal student loan system, these places wouldn't exist.

My girlfriend, in her capacity as a lawyer, sued one of these frauds for breach of contract. And I know many a personal horror stories of smart, driven people (read: not vagrants or hoodlums) who went to these college with a leg up in their careers in IT and ended up being no more prepared than when they went in -- and in more debt than me and I'm in as graduate from atop tier college.

Actually wingnuts...I have sent more than a few kids to colleges who otherwise would have never considered going. Ivies, Staties, and Community Colleges. Pout all you want.
The fantasies of eveel unions makes me laugh. Those who spout this drivel are usually delusional about their skill set and usefulness. Mewling about eveel unions makes them feel better. Unions did not steal your pension, they did not lie to steal your Social Security, they don't outsource jobs, and they make conditions at the workplace more bearable.
I know wingnuts are horrified that teachers don't bow and scrape as Pwincess Wingnut goes by...that teachers make about half the going rate for a Master's (earned, unlike the christian kkkolleges version)...that teachers do more before noon than most wingnuts do in week. Wingnut or wingnut Jr can't cut it...so teecher mus' be fired...Damn unions! Can't let a uneducated buffoon control anybod' but hisself.

"Higher education tends to D voting"

Not exactly. Liberal indoctrination at american universities is intense, but the democrat voting bloc is comprised (most signifcantly) of billionaires and the dependent class, who are in league against the middle class (Republicans).

The billionaires finance the operation, and the dependents (welfare recipients, social security/medicare benificiaries, government employees, students) supply the votes.

Billionaires have their fortunes, and income redistributionist polices and affirmative action programs won't hurt them at all. They do have some guilt about their vast wealth, and it makes them feel better to make the middle class redistribute some of their income, job, and educational opportunites to their allies, the dependent classes.

That's how it works in A-merry-ca.

So when they graduated they werent magically employed or all of sudden graced with superior intellect? What did she sue them for? Did she have proof that they really applied themselves had the intellect and then couldnt what...pull an interview?

So what exactly is wrong with obtaining a superior education if the providers make money providing it? Or are you marxist and you believe that we all should receive the Politically correct academically watered down and virtually equivalent to a high school diploma community college education with government subsidies? (taxpayer funded)

Perhaps you could never find that same level of satisfaction in the relationships you've had, if you've ever had one."

Bullshit. If she could have any man she wanted, she damn sure wouldn't be with UTS. BTW, are you also involved with his wife? You seem to run to defend her...even when UTS doesn't. What's going on?

BTW, you threatened Field with leaving until all of the anons have been removed. Well, dummie, there are more anons on FN than ever before! So what are you doing back, you wimp?

BTW, Anon Inc will be hiring 100 new anons THIS YEAR to keep up with the demand on FN blog. Hell, 75 of the anons will be devoted to handling AB, cause she is a load!

We also have 'one' junior highschool kid in special ed to debate you. He has an IQ of 58. We wanted to find someone who would be especially challenging to you.

No_Slappz said "you nitwits claim to know things that you know nothing about and claim they are dear to your hearts......that's part of the Black problem". Well, um see the thing is Slapped Silly that is your problem also. I have pointed out several times in which you claim knowledge of something and get exposed for not knowing a damned thing about what you are expounding about. Case in point, yesterday you claimed there were no urban schools with Black students that was successful but I showed you several here in Chicago. You may have been hyperbolic but several of us live in urban areas that you have never set foot in so how could you even attempt to make such a statement? I know, the all knowing WM disease. Your type is not new, Black men were told during WWII that they could not fly airplanes but boy were they proven wrong. Slappy is not new nor will his type ever go away. Of course he can only speak from his experience as limited as it is. He has never experienced life an an exceptional Black person so that experience is totally foreign to him so he dismisses our realities as non-existant. Racists like him have tried to dehumanize us for centuries to make themselves feel better but what can ya do? I kinda feel sorry for the guy.

Slapz, the AVERAGE ACT score at PSM is 23, some kids score higher some lower. Yes, I know the principle is white, I've worked with kids from the school. If the ACT was the only dictator of success then I would agree with you that some schools aren't top tier but here are some more facts about PSM, almost 100% of their students go to college and 43% go to elite universities. This is true of all the schools I listed, all of their kids go to good colleges and then go on to successful careers. I personally know grads from these schools and all are very successful. Folks I know that attended these schools have gone to Northwestern Law school, U of I medical school,U.S. Air Force Academy, DePaul, University of Chicago, Lewis U, ect. ect. So my statement about high performing Black schools still remains. Don't try to couch your statement now about skimming top students because using that same logic all white students are high performers and attend top flight schools which we all know ain't true. Look at some of the graduates of these schools and you will see some notable names. I know I know, you have a need to shoot down any kind of performance by a Black person but hey if that's how you get your rocks off have at it kid.

AB, you are truly stupid, and your mental state is unbelievable.

If you were really a "teacher", you would find you do not indoctrinate with your deluded opinions on which should be neutral. Your politics has no place in education. That is for the parent's purview, same as religion.

Teach, but not inculcate. You are truly mentally imbalanced, as your obsessions demonstrate. If you're an example of teachers, it's no wonder Public Schools are in such sad shape.

No wonder you support Teacher's Unions. They protect idiots with no compassion towards the students.

Hell, the Unions even support teachers accused of molestation....(I'd even bet the Union pays for their relocation to another District)

Are you saying teachers can't voice their opinions on a blog? How can you equate what AB teaches with what she says on FN blog? There is a difference between what one does "professionally" and what one does "privately"...wouldn't you agree?

Maybe after dealing with unruly kids from the Southside of Chicago, she needs to vent on FN blog! I mean, you do, don't you?
