President Obama was at Dr. King's alma mater today, and he had some strong words for the young men there.
Some of you Negroes are saying that he was just having a Sistah Souljah moment at the expense of the Morehouse men, and that he is always airing black folk's dirty laundry when he speaks to a large black group.
I have to respectfully disagree. That message the president sent today was on point and it needed to be delivered.
"Obama spoke in very personal terms to the 500 young men as he urged them to not only become leaders in their community, but also good fathers and good husbands. Obama, who was raised by a single mother and grandparents, lamented the absence of his father in his life and urged the graduates to make family their top priority.
Obama told the Morehouse men they are also obliged to set an example for other black men.
"Keep setting an example for what it means to be a man," Obama said. "Be the best husband to your wife, or boyfriend to your partner, or father to your children that you can be. Because nothing is more important."
What is wrong with what he said? Last time I checked his daddy was a black man, and he wasn't exactly a role model. I am not sure I can blame the president for having some issues with that.
Look, without getting too personal, I work in an area of law that unfortunately has to confront a lot of dysfunction when it comes to families, and I can say without question that not having a good father figure at home is a major cause of problems with families here in my city. I suspect that this is the case all over the country. Asking young African American graduates to go out into their communities and be good family men is exactly the type of message that the president should be sending.
"But Field, why didn't he deliver a similar message to the graduates of Ohio State University? Why doesn't he talk about being a responsible parent when he talks to white folks? Why does he only choose to lecture us?
Because, as a black man, he has a stake in how we progress as a race.
More than likely one or both of his daughters will marry a black man, and he understand that in spite of his white mother, his place in the American melting pot is with you black folks.
Mitt Romney, as America's president, would not have spoken at Morehouse College (or any other HBCU), and Anne Romney would not have been caught dead speaking at Bowie State University in her capacity as First Lady. (Loved how Michelle Obama went there about black kids thinking other black kids are acting white if they are hitting their books.) So rather than rip the man for telling you Negroes what you need to hear, you need to take stock of yourselves and see why there is a need for him to say it in the first place.
Finally, speaking of black men, I see that the Tea Party has recruited one to run as their candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. Unfortunately for them most black folks in Virginia would probably rather vote for the very purple Barney than this guy. Because, quite frankly, he is nuts!
Sadly, this is what happens when you don't know too many black people; you tend to have to pick your friends from a very small pool.

There's no surprise here. Obama's 2008 campaign was a veritable national put-down tour of Black churches; a clear political move to score points with his white masters. But Obama's right. Black people have many problems. Not least among them is their undying love for a man who, on the infrequent occasion he deigns to address them, holds them at arms length and with nose firmly pinched. By so wholly supporting such a person, Black America has let Obama paint it into a corner of political irrelevancy.
Jonston,
did you read the entire speech?
did you?
I watched the entire speech and watched him link history to the Black men sitting there.
and, he didn't say anything that our parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, church elders haven't said to us throughout our lives.
When President Obama tells them that they have to work twice as hard....
is there a Black parent/grandparent that hasn't said it before to them?
Did you actually LISTEN to the speech?
From beginning to end?
The most important part of his speech was, from Black Man to another - imploring them to be the BEST MEN they can be in their private lives.
..................
from the President's speech:
Graduates, I am humbled to stand here with all of you as an honorary Morehouse Man. And as I do, I'm mindful of an old saying: "You can always tell a Morehouse Man, but you can't tell him much." That makes my task today a little more difficult, I suppose. But I think it also reflects the sense of pride that has always been a part of the Morehouse tradition.
Benjamin Mays, who served as the president of Morehouse for almost 30 years, understood that tradition perhaps better than anyone. He said, "It will not be sufficient for Morehouse College, for any college, for that matter, to produce clever graduates... but rather honest men, men who can be trusted in public and private life - men who are sensitive to the wrongs, the sufferings, and the injustices of society and who are willing to accept responsibility for correcting [those] ills."
It was that mission - not just to educate men, but to cultivate good men - that brought community leaders together just two years after the end of the Civil War. They assembled a list of 37 men, free blacks and freed slaves, who would make up the first prospective class of what later became Morehouse College. Most of those first students had a desire to become teachers and preachers - to better themselves so they could help others do the same.
...............................
That's the unique sense of purpose that has always infused this place - the conviction that this is a training ground not only for individual success, but for leadership that can change the world.
..........................
......................
I understand there's a common fraternity creed here at Morehouse: "Excuses are tools of the incompetent used to build bridges to nowhere and monuments of nothingness." Well, we've got no time for excuses. Not because the bitter legacy of slavery and segregation have vanished entirely; they have not. Not because racism and discrimination no longer exist; we know those are still out there. It's just that in today's hyperconnected, hypercompetitive world, with millions of young people from China and India and Brazil -- many of whom started with a whole lot less than all of you did -- all of them entering the global workforce alongside you, nobody is going to give you anything that you have not earned. (Applause.)
Nobody cares how tough your upbringing was. Nobody cares if you suffered some discrimination. And moreover, you have to remember that whatever you've gone through, it pales in comparison to the hardships previous generations endured -- and they overcame them. And if they overcame them, you can overcome them, too. (Applause.)
You now hail from a lineage and legacy of immeasurably strong men -- men who bore tremendous burdens and still laid the stones for the path on which we now walk. You wear the mantle of Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington, and Ralph Bunche and Langston Hughes, and George Washington Carver and Ralph Abernathy and Thurgood Marshall, and, yes, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These men were many things to many people. And they knew full well the role that racism played in their lives. But when it came to their own accomplishments and sense of purpose, they had no time for excuses
but, what do I know...I listened to the ENTIRE SPEECH.
Granted, there are too many black men that’s not pulling their weight nor doing what they should be doing. Instead, too many black American men are living frivolous lives. This is a fact!
However, the Commander in Lecturing is at it again and doing what he does best while speaking to black folks, …. lecturing. Pres. ObomBer speaks as if this country is a utopian society and that they’ve never been a sustain and concerted effort by collective whites (government forces and otherwise) on every front to keep blacks in a marginalized disposition. No doubt, ObomBer’s self inducement, his series of lectures, his over simplification and promotion of this supposed utopian country is placing all black men at risk of appearing to be mere bastards. By doing this and on the other hand, he aquits Amerikkka of it’s detestable and wretched legacy regarding racism, its devilry policies and discriminatory history targeting black folks to keep us powerless on every conceivable level.
Mr. President, the weight of the historical plight (sometimes bloody) of black Americans is irreducible to black boys and and girls who are fatherless and were without a steering mechanism to navigate life’s treacherous course. It’s just too darn bad that you failed miserably, again, and squandered an opportunity to tell them the truth.
Another black republican, eh? I thought it was much funnier the way that Dave Chappelle did it a decade ago, but imitation/flattery, etc.
You know, as a people, sometimes we are simply pathetic. There is nothing that the president said to which he did not tie himself.
Why do we always tear down one of our own? He owned not having a father. He owned the possibility of what he could have become. He told the truth. I have two sons who are graduates of MOREHOUSE who can testify to the realities presented in this speech.
I will save this one for posterity; I'm so sorry some of us are so thin-skinned and warped that we can't appreciate a gift when we receive it.
Whobetter to rally our men than someone just like them? Who better to encourage our men than another brother? Who better to tell the truth about life for them in these United States than one who, while he may not have been part of the movement, has certainly felt the fires of racism, bigotry, hatred, hostility and misunderstanding everyday of his presidency.
It's a shame that some of the afore-mentioned come from too many of us.
for eveingeorgia:
from the President's speech:
And I will tell you, Class of 2013, whatever success I have achieved, whatever positions of leadership I have held have depended less on Ivy League degrees or SAT scores or GPAs, and have instead been due to that sense of connection and empathy — the special obligation I felt, as a black man like you, to help those who need it most, people who didn’t have the opportunities that I had — because there but for the grace of God, go I — I might have been in their shoes. I might have been in prison. I might have been unemployed. I might not have been able to support a family. And that motivates me.
Because, as a black man, he has a stake in how we progress as a race..
But Barack Obama is not black - he is the son of a Kenyan aristocrat and white teenager, raised by the white side of his family in Indonesia and Hawaii, adopted by an Indonesian, and educated in the schools of the elite.
He is not, as true American blacks are, descended form slaves. He did not grow up in a segregated society, never experienced Jim Crow, and hardly saw another black person until his mid-twenties.
He never faced the challenges of black Americans. He was handed every achievement on a silver platter. His empathy for the black condition is a pure political ploy. He has cashed the check of black political capital with a forged signature.
He is not black.
He is not black, huh? Never faced discrimination? Where have you been the last five years?
If he's not black, somebody forgot to tell Limbaugh, Fox, the entire republican congress, Glenn Beck, the Drudge Report and a lot of Negroes, er....Blacks, who are just as warped in their thinking as those I just named.
This is some backwards thinking if ever there was any.
He's not black....just wow?
eveingeorgia said...

------
What is so pathetic is how no one can criticize, or even disagree with a black person, without it being solely attributable to racism.
Blacks display a pathological degree of infantile narcissism.
Obama has been an abject failure as a President, and is now embroiled in several serious scandals that, if this nation has an ounce of integrity left, should result in his removal from office.
The worst President ever.
And yes, I agree that he is blackness is contrived. Black people should disown him.
Sorry Jeremiah, I don't know your skin color, but if you have the President's skin tone you are Black in America no matter who raised you or where you grew up. & I am absolutely sure that our President has not gone through life without encountering the the suspicious attitudes & the indignities that many white folks don't even know are indignities. He probably felt them going into into a deserted Dunkin' Donuts at 1 am while he was a Harvard student taking a break from his studying. He knows.
Bias Gomex, what can I say? Your comments have left me speechless.
Three scandals, huh? Can you even read? Can you think beyond talkng points?
That sound you hear is me laughing myself to sleep!
Sorry Bias GomeZ... did not mean to misspell your name.

How the fuck are you absolutely sure white boy? STFU about things you know nothing about.
I also imagine that speaking at Dr. King's alma mater would be a deeply personal experience for nearly every African-American, & it would inspire a specifically personal response for the occasion. It is a small school.
Obama lied when he said he was a black man, but his biggest lie of the night was when he said "as an African American you have to work twice as hard as anyone else if you want to get by."
He says bullshit like this because he knows how easy he had it, and feels guilty about it.
As blacks, his daughters will get preferential admissions to college, and will benefit from federal hiring requirements for blacks.
Half as hard as everyone else is pushing it,
I liked his speech. Yes, it is very much needed. And Black men who have succeeded should be going out in the streets passing down his message to those young Blacks who are lost and caught up in street life, who have given up hope because of racism. The President may not have experience Jim Crow, but he sure has experienced extreme racism and more than likely discrimination. Don't think that just because he had a white mother they gave him a pass. Racist whites hate biracial people because they think that white mother contaminated their blood by having a baby by a black man.
That is pure hogwash that he is not Black. He is just as Black as any Black American, when he fills out any application he checks the box for Black or African American because that's what he is. There is not a day in his term as President of these divided states that he has not been reminded of that by Fox We Make It Up News, kiss ass negroes who remain on their kneepads, Rush, Glen, and the rest of the white supremacist.
Let me remind you of something else in our history that people seem to forget or just don't know. In spite of what you may want to believe, biracial children did not have it all good during slavery. In fact, they went through hell as well. They were sold, the women were sent to whorehouses, beaten and had basically the same experience as those of a darker hue. They were disowned by their biological father and sold by him if the price was right. In addition, they were disowned by their own people. Go back and look in the archives of slave testimonies. In fact, they were treated just like being President is being treated now.
Please stop trying to divide Blacks using the President as a wedge between them. America was built with plenty of deceptions and lies to keep you from uniting as one people. I am never ever going to disown any of my people, whether they are Blue Black, Chocolate, Tan, Red Bone, or all any and every other color that Blacks come in, or so light they look darn near white.
Yes, we have some bad actors, but so do other groups of people that's apart of human nature, and there will always be some good and some bad until the world ends.
Ask yourself this question, who taught you to hate your own people?
Field, why am I not surprised that you agree 100% with WHATEVER the President says, or does? You and Granny idolize Obama. He is GOD in your eyes and can do no wrong. But since neither one of you believe in GOD, or religion, you need a GOD like Obama. You are a sick man.
Btw, the President did have some slaves in his family as well.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/30/barack-obama-slave-ancestry_n_1721018.html
Obama is not as black as Eminem.
When Obama goes to prison for dereliction of duty for Benghazi and felony abuse of power for the IRS and AP scandals, then he will be black.
Granny, I am a researcher and I know that Obama does NOT have any slaves in his ancestry. If you had paid careful attention to the video the researcher mentioned that there could be "error".
However, I can understand why you would want it to be true. You want to identify with Obama even though he does not identify with Blacks. I sympathize with the black race and its need for hope. But may I suggest you find someone who truly cares about your race? Obama has proven that he does not.
First of all, I am not an unique Black man from the post-Jim Crow period. In regards to the president having honored Morehouse College with a commencement speech, I am of the opinion that sometimes you got to accept your medicine from the hands that give it. Close your eye on this one and open your ears to the message. This message was a daily mantra in my household growing up in the 50s and 60s. It came from ALL black men...from the lowest (according to prevailing social standards) to the highest. Now you must remember we didn't have the rates of incarceration and out-of-wedlock births as today. I and my five brothers have many young sons and none of them are/have been incarcerated or have children that are out of marital unions. Was it the messengers or the message? The president was giving medicine for survival of Black men in today's American. He was giving an old formula and giving marching orders to men that are now better equipped to deal with racism/life's obstructions and just maybe some wayward young person will see what is doable. So again...if there is no messenger...there will be no message. Please listen to what I and many other young men of past generations were fortunately to have heard.....Field Negro..Thanks for the 411 on our(Virginia's)potential LT Gov. You remember our first Black governor and his legacy was that he was using states' funds to chase after a billionaire's throwaway? Late night helicopter rides to see "his women". We will keep an eye on the next one (you know what I mean by "one") :0
"I know that Obama does NOT have any slaves in his ancestry"
Of course he doesn't.
The man's entire life is a made-up story.
Granny, you know east Oakland is where the majority of your folks live and shoot each other. Many of your relatives live there and you know it. You have said so in previous posts.
A Black Panther Forever said...
Now you must remember we didn't have the rates of incarceration and out-of-wedlock births as today.

Why is that?
Why in the era when things were so bad, did black people live much more functional lives?
"You remember our first Black governor and his legacy was that he was using states' funds to chase after a billionaire's throwaway? Late night helicopter rides to see "his women". We will keep an eye on the next one (you know what I mean by "one") :0"
Who was your first Black governor and who was he chasing? It sounds like you are making up a late night soap opera story. GET REAL. Blacks and Whites don't have interracial relationships in VA.
A Black Panther Forever-you don't sound like a Panther and you talk in circumlocutions. What the hell you are talking about? Is that the way you were raised in your day, to be vague and unclear?
Anonymous, and that still does not erase the fact that the President is a BLACK man in America. The world views him as a BLACK man.
Most Blacks posting on here have a white paternal ancestor somewhere in their tree. The only difference is the female was black and the male was white, so if we apply the same measuring stick that you're applying to President Obama would that make them all non-black? After all, techically that would mean that their descendants were not black.
Granny@1:23am, your assumptions, reasoning and rationale makes no sense.
And 'how' do you know people posting on FN have a white paternal ancestor somewhere?
Field, "Finally, speaking of black men, I see that the Tea Party has recruited one to run as their candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia."
Well, now you can stop "R" chasing the Tea Party. This is proof that they are not racists. Brother Field, I have been trying to tell you they never were racist. Obama just wasn't their cup of Tea. But this eloquently speaking Black man for LT. Gov is.He sounds great!
"Sadly, this is what happens when you don't know too many black people; you tend to have to pick your friends from a very small poo"
Bullshit. That's all you ever have to say.
Nope, not assumptions, they are facts in history.
Because most blacks do have a white ancestor somewhere in their tree. African women on the slaves ships were raped before they got here and rapes continued with black women throughout slavery, reconstruction, and during Jim Crow.
The presidents message was very good. However it should have been delivered to inner city youth whose lives will amount to nothing. I imagine a young man graduating from Morehouse has his shit together already.
Yep, the President doesn't mind preaching to Black folks but, we had better not ask for anything otherwise he'll start his 'I'm not the President of Black America' tour again.
Reverend Jackson was right, Obama does condescend to Black folks.
But, at least the President didn't sing any Al Green songs during his speech at Morehouse.
Val
Nice try Jeremiah Wrong ( your handle is perfect), but read what eveingeorgia wrote again.
It's funny how some Americans try to pick and choose who is black and who isn't.
Trust me, he is black, and he knows it. He just happens to be president, and it's driving folks like u nuts. :)

So, yes, go get that law degree. But if you do, ask yourself if the only option is to defend the rich and the powerful, or if you can also find some time to defend the powerless. Sure, go get your MBA, or start that business. We need black businesses out there. But ask yourselves what broader purpose your business might serve, in putting people to work, or transforming a neighborhood. The most successful CEOs I know didn’t start out intent just on making money -- rather, they had a vision of how their product or service would change things, and the money followed.

This is going to be one of those rare times when we agree to disagree Field. It's easy for POTUS to tell black men to be better men and take care of their family etc, but it's hard for them to do that graduating from college with huge student loan debt and NO J-O-B-S. The unemployment rate in the AA community is 14%, double that of whites. And we aren't even going to talk about the dismal shape of the public school system and the mass incarceration and killing of young black men. Talk is cheap. We need some action. POTUS needs to do less patronizing and more reading.

Absolute Rubbish.....
If your going to have this kind of "pull ya bootstraps" speech at leat put in place the policys that affecuate the "Change" your asking for. Hes done nothing about student loan debts ... the housing market , mass incarceration....

and what are YOU going to do Obomber???

Thats his great legacy in a nutshell...
The grads will need to fight 10 times as hard, worthless degrees from a worthless college!
Black men are not the problem, they are merely acting rationally in the world black women have created.
Why would they marry and support a family? Black women are notoriously unfaithful. Many start having babies in their teens and will have children by several different men over their lifetimes. They do not wait for marriage, instead relying on the state as a reliable provider.
Married to the state, they are free to live their lives unencumbered by any responsibilities to a husband.
No man wants to commit to 18 years of support for a child that he is not sure is his. Few men want to take on the responsibility of supporting other men's children. Without the driving need to support a family, the hard work of building a career or business is often foregone.
The little boys raised by these women see the boyfriends come and go, and learn what women are really like. Absent a father to pass on the lessons of being a man, they instead adopt the dysfunctional hyper-masculinity prized by their mothers, a credo that winds up with many dead or in jail.
Women have cheapened the value of marriage to men for the point it is no longer worth much effort.
Women set the tone for every culture. Want real change? Stop advertising for violent studs and start demanding honest working men to be the fathers of your children.
Give these men virgins, or at least childless women to vie for, women who will offer them fidelity for their lifelong commitment of labor and support, and black men will rise to the challenge. Black children will have stable families living in stable communities, and black achievement will soar.
I watched Obama's speech yesterday and frankly, its the most honest thing I've heard said at commencement in a long time and its what my parents (both former sharecroppers) drilled into my head. From the pulipts on Sunday morning, to what my grandmother told me when I graduated high school, Obama said nothing different than anything a self-aware Black person hasn't heard at the kitchen table:
1. The world isn't going to give you anything. Despite your success now, you'll still find racism (and some brothers' cases - homophobia) lurking at your every step. You want something in America, you're going to take it by force.
2. Don't let the occasional bouts of racism stop you from success because your parents had it tougher than you and sacrificed a lot for you. (Again, my grandparents were uneducated farmers living under the boot of Jim Crow who sent three kids through college.)
3. The Black community needs us (young educated Black men, the so-called Talented Tenth) to be leaders because white folks sure as hell ain't gonna save our neighborhoods. So don't become like many young Black college grads who run off after getting their diplomas to chase paper and women (or men if that's what you're into), never bothering to give back to the 'hood. (I know plenty of cats who did just that. Hell, I did it for a few years.)
4. Being a good man (father, partner, neighbor, friend) is more important than being rich and powerful man. Again, Obama cares more about his wife and daughters than being the leader of the free world. Seeing as there is a culture of underground bacchanalia in the ATL to lure many a Black man astray - this definitely hits home.
I love Tim Wise's writing - he gets white privilege better than most and puts into your face loud and clear. But despite his somber and intelligent insights, as his article shows, he's still a white guy writing from a vantage point of privilege and there are limits to his understanding of Blackness.
As for the Black intelligensia who get all huffy when Obama talks like this (I looking at you, MHP and Cornell West), chill out. If more black leaders spoke about Blackness as honestly as Obama, we may not have half our problems. Also, most of the people complaining are mad that no one cares what they think.
I guess the many lectures Malcolm X made about personal responsibility made him a Tom too? Whatever.

That is a very telling admission. Time Wise is virulently anti-white gentile racist who openly advocates for white genocide. He has made millions complaining about “White privilege” while exempting himself from any taint of Whiteness.
Wise kinda-sorta claims to be white in an apparent quest to score self-flagellation points, but not really, since he says his Jewish ancestors were only able to achieve success by slyly passing as white. So if I’m understanding him correctly, even though he insists he’s white and that white guilt is a real thing, don’t try and pin any of the bad stuff about whiteness on him, because he’s not really white. This, apparently, is how he’s able to feel justified in plotting the “destruction” of the “conservative old white people who have pretty much always been the bad guys” while he refers to Jews as “my people.”
Fuck me with a dreidel if that “destruction” line doesn’t sound somewhat genocidal, Uncle Tim. But what the hell do I know—I’m rendered deaf, dumb, and blind by “white privilege,” right?
If you love the writings of Uncle Tim, the core of your being is hate.
Hey what's up Field? Sorry I been sick. This is off topic you should look into a guy called Rob Redding, he's a Ratf***er that has a radio call in show that slams the Prez. He calls himself a independent, which means he's a Republiklan. He has called the Prez Gay, said he had sex with Amb. Rice and a whole lot of other stuff. His phone in show (1-855-762-3080)at 4:00 to 7:00 EST has no phone calls lately. He sounds like a black Don Knotts.
Thanks for the tip kid, Rob Redding sounds like a great guy. I'll look him up and maybe even give him a call. Maybe make a donation.

Field, "It's funny how some Americans try to pick and choose who is black and who isn't."
Yes it is funny how some Blacks, like YOU, try to choose who is Black and who isn't. You have been calling me White whenever you don't like what I have to say about being Black in America. YOU really ought to STFU about this matter, HYPOCRITE!
All negroes are equal, but some negroes are more equal than others.
Jerry Springer said...
"Black men are not the problem, they are merely acting rationally in the world black women have created.
Why would they marry and support a family? Black women are notoriously unfaithful. Many start having babies in their teens and will have children by several different men over their lifetimes. They do not wait for marriage, instead relying on the state as a reliable provider."
Thank you Jerry. Black women ARE infidels.

Field, "Unfortunately for them most black folks in Virginia would probably rather vote for the very purple Barney than this guy. Because, quite frankly, he is nuts!"
If Black folks in VA will vote for Obama, they will certainly vote for E.W. Jackson. At least he talks "TO" Blacks, instead of "AT" them in a condescending criticizing hurtful way, as 'if' he were GOD.
Race relations are getting better in America.
Just a few years ago Bill Cosby was called an Uncle Tom, a sellout and other derogatory names for saying the same basic thing President Obama said.
Kudos to those on on the left for evolving.

Its funny how O-bomber wants the students to listen to this stuff...
"We've got no time for excuses -- not because the bitter legacies of slavery and segregation have vanished entirely; they haven't. Not because racism and discrimination no longer exist; that's still out there. And whatever hardships you may experience because of your race, they pale in comparison to the hardships previous generations endured -- and overcame."
Yet he uses Republicans, Congress, George Bush as EXCUSES as to why he cannot break the gridlock in Washington... Hes full of lame weak excuses....
Arent great Leaders supposed to lead by example???
Just what is the example set....?? When at every fork in the road he folds like a cheap suit to appease those who despise him.....

The blackish hobama treats all black mongrels like blackened doormats…
even Morehouse grads…Shame!!!
But here’s the issue. Telling black Americans to stop using racism as an excuse allows President Obama to create a set of excuses for his own significant, even embarrassing, lack of action to help alleviate the clearly documented, undeniable, legislatively-enforced poison of racial inequality that continues to impact our society. As he tells the Morehouse men to take more responsibility for their own lives, the mirror of personal responsibility should also be turned on the most powerful black man in the history of the world to use his massive platform to help confront systematic racism that affects us all.
Another thing about black people is that many of us suffer from the low self-esteem that tends to afflict oppressed individuals. We’re not much different from the housewife who believes her husband wouldn’t have had to beat her if she had not burned the cookies. When her husband is out with other women, she is simply thankful that he took the time to pay the rent. She’s ecstatic about any form of acknowledgement from her husband whatsoever, and when he berates her, she knows that she deserves it. To some extent, she comes to embrace her oppression as the natural order of things, and the tranquility of her marriage is built upon the idea that his views, needs and status are superior to her own.
Similar to the man who tells his wife that she needs to lose a few pounds, she also has the right to ask her husband why he himself is obese. When he sleeps with other women, she can use that as her explanation for why another man was in her husband’s bed while he was at work. The point here is that every single mandate that President Obama is putting on the men at Morehouse College (and those who could not be there) to “man up” and stop making excuses must be applied to a president who has continuously used Republican racism as his excuse for contributing almost nothing to fight the curse of black unemployment, mass incarceration, educational inequality, workplace racism and all the other social ills that we face every single day of the week.
Here’s another memo for the president: You’re not just half black, you’re also half white. So, as you speak to African Americans and tell them to stop using racism as their excuse for a lack of achievement, I encourage you to give similar speeches to your white “brothers and sisters,” telling them the same things. The fact is that the Obama White House has a much more sympathetic ear when whites complain about 7 percent unemployment than it does when black Americans complain about 14% unemployment. This is patently and undeniably unfair, and even the president knows it.

"But if you do, ask yourself if the only option is to defend the rich and the powerful, or if you can also find some time to defend the powerless. Sure, go get your MBA, or start that business. We need black businesses out there. But ask yourselves what broader purpose your business might serve, in putting people to work, or transforming a neighborhood. The most successful CEOs I know didn’t start out intent just on making money -- rather, they had a vision of how their product or service would change things, and the money followed."
And all of what LACoincidental said too.
Especially, this part "As for the Black intelligensia who get all huffy when Obama talks like this (I looking at you, MHP and Cornell West), chill out. If more black leaders spoke about Blackness as honestly as Obama, we may not have half our problems."
MatanzasGV and LAConcidental PREACH IT!
I agree with Matanzas and LaCoincidental. All of those with college degrees could be reaching back, starting their own businesses and giving our people jobs. Some could go into business together in partnerships. Pooling money together can accomplish a lot too. Take what you've learned and use it to help your people.
Blacks' ancestors show them the way. It might sound simple or uneducated to you, but it worked.
@ Granny: Don't black professionals have enough to worry about without taking on the responsibility of uplifting every other black person, whether they deserve/want it or not?
Isn't taking care of their family and making common cause with other decent people (of any race) enough?
Tim Wise is the new John Brown…Kudos!!!
Every student should have walked out on that racist fool hobama in protest!!!!....What a gd shame!!!!!
If the former, then Barack Obama has for once and all revealed himself to be not nearly the deep and analytical thinker so many have long believed. After all, Morehouse men like the ones to whom the president delivered his commencement address today, are not the type to slack off, or make excuses for their shortcomings, or wait for others to do things for them. They earned admission to an amazing school, and have now graduated from said school, on the basis of their own merit and hard work. To hector them like they were potential supplicants looking for a handout is crass and beneath the dignity of a President of the United States, and especially one who shares the coloring of most, if not all of those graduates.
Barack Obama knows how demanding a school Morehouse is. So to preach hard work to these men, as if they had never heard of it — as if they now intended to kick back and wait for things to be handed to them — is to not only insult their intelligence, but also to feed every vicious stereotype already held by too many white Americans about black males, no matter how educated. It is to give us fuel for our already too-well-stoked racist fires, made ever hotter now by the ability to say, “See, even Obama knows the truth about black men! Even he knows they’re always making excuses for their failures.”
Meanwhile, if the President thought it necessary to upbraid this year’s Morehouse graduates about not being lazy or using racism as an excuse for their shortcomings, precisely because he thinks (or perhaps knows) that white folks love that shit — the second possibility — then that too is pitiable.
To the extent the president no longer needs white folks to like him for the sake of re-election, that he regularly panders to our biases about the black community — as with his repeated lectures to black men, but only black men, on multiple father’s days to be better dads (cuz God knows white men need no similar instruction!) — suggests that perhaps it is he whose views of the black community are to blame here. Perhaps it is he who has internalized the idea that black people, even highly educated ones, are would-be malingerers, just waiting for a reason to go soft and “blame the world for trying to keep a black man down” (yes, he actually used that phrase in his speech).
In short, to Barack Obama, it is only black people who need lectures about personal responsibility. Only they who make excuses when things don’t go their way. Only they who need to be reminded to do their best, because white graduates — like the majority of the grads at Ohio State to whom he also spoke recently — have got all that on lock. Their work ethics are unassailable. They would never make excuses for their failings. They would never blame a 35 percent tax rate, or capital gains taxes, for instance, for causing them to not invest their money, or create jobs. They would never blame gay marriage for threatening their own heterosexual marriage.

I don't get it! I just don't get it! The white man can tell you the same thing that President Obama told you and you break your necks running over each other and take their word as the gospel.
However, the President who is one of you (a BLACK man) can tell you how he did it, what you can and need to do to help pull each other up and all of a sudden it's an insult to Black people.
What's so funny about it is that it is not a new remedy or recipe to build growth in a people of color's communities. That same recipe is used daily by Asians, Hispanics, Filipinoes, Indians, Iranians, Arabs, and WHITE FOLKS.
Black Wall Street, Wilmington, and other successful Black communities used the same recipe. My own ancestors built a community within a community, were very successful, and well respected.
I have to agree with Field on Obama's commencement speech @ Morehouse. He wasn't trying to talk down to the graduates, he was trying to inspire & motivate them to do better with their lives than other African American men have.

"However, the President who is one of you (a BLACK man) can tell you how he did it, what you can and need to do to help pull each other up and all of a sudden it's an insult to Black people."
He did by being raised by a white family, going to rich people's schools, and receiving the support of the people of power.
Sorry Granny, but that formula is not available to most of us.

FROM www.theBlackCommentator.com:
This is a man who has enjoyed the fruits of America at the blood and expense of Black Americans and others, but who has paid virtually no dues.
This is a man whose father had also enjoyed the fruits of university schooling in America but subsequently returned to his native Kenya.
This is a man, who also like his father before him, neither served in a branch of the US military nor in any organization in America opposed to US military adventurism.
This is a man who as a deeply corporate military industrial complex US Presidential candidate, has called for “unilateral” US military actions in other nations. [And why not? After-all, his father, himself, or his wife and children were not and will not be the ones killing and being killed.]
This is a man who, in Chicago, pretended to support the human rights of the Palestinian people but who is now known to be a huge supporter of the apartheid Zionists and their powerful and insidious political lobby in America.
This is a man who dares opportunistically to feign admiration for the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but does not share the collective memory, pain and deep concerns of Black America, other people of color, or even of numerous white Americans for that matter - in the ongoing struggle for equality and justice in this nation.
This is a man who has de facto contempt for the past supreme sacrifices made by thousands of activists from so-called “militant” organizations such the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU), the Student National Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Black Panther Party (BPP), Students For A Democratic Society (SDS), the American Indian Movement (AIM), the Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM), etc.
This is a man who is silent about the need for reparations for Black American descendants of slaves and the genocide of the indigenous so-called “Indian” peoples on this continent. He is the consummate opportunist who, in reality, cares nothing about the horrors inflicted upon Black, Brown, and Red peoples in this nation, and has repeatedly signaled that he plans to inflict even more “unilateral” military horrors upon various nations and peoples of the world.
This man, Barack Obama, is but a more articulate, younger, and shinier version of the current and infamous US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, adorning himself dangerously and abundantly in superficiality and double-speak.
The Field is right on point. It is entirely appropriate of the President to challenge young, educated brothers to go beyond the stereotype and give back something to a race of people badly in need of heroes, leaders, role models and father figures. This is a entirely different challenge than White kids graduating from Ohio State or elsewhere have. While the president's critics whine about his speech they should be asking, "What did he say that wasn't true?"
