"Patriot Games"

"I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest... Instead, I'm going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great, and hopefully that will be a testament to my patriotism."
I see that you are trying to make F. Scott Fitzgerald a liar huh "O" man? I guess you are trying to show that there are second acts in American lives. Wow, who would have known? Here you are on your very own red white and blue I am more patriotic than you tour, and trying to erase all those unpartiotic memories some of your fellow A-merry-cans might have of you.

I caught a part of your second act in Independence Missouri today, (What's up with matching your location with the theme of your speech? Unity, New Hampshire for your little love fest with Hilary, and now this. I guess you will be going to Hell Michigan when you give your speech on religion) and your speech was impressive. Honest to god I wanted to find my citizenship papers and cradle them over my heart.

But I need you to understand that this all might be a little too late. Hell even so called main stream media outlets are taking polls to see if you are really a patriot. Do you believe this shit? I mean here you are running for President of these divided states and folks are questioning your patriotism. But I gotta give it to you "O" man, you are certainly giving it the old "college try".

"It's worth considering the meaning of patriotism because the question of who is - or is not - a patriot all too often poisons our political debates, in ways that divide us rather than bringing us together.. "Throughout my life, I have always taken my deep and abiding love for this country as a given. It was how I was raised; it is what propelled me into public service; it is why I am running for President.."

Well yes "O" man, let's consider the meaning of patriotism for a minute. Webster's Dictionary defines it as "love or devotion of ones country." You certainly qualify there "O" man, the problem is, many of your fellow country men don't believe it. You see, to them, love of country means different things: It means wearing your flag pin at all times, it means not questioning your government when they do fucked up things, it means protecting our borders at all costs from people who look and act a little different than we are; people who we think will come here and try to change our way of life, it means that we take everything the good book says literally and keep god in our lives at all times. Because, after all, everybody knows that god is an A-merry-can. Are you for all of those things "O" man? If you are,you can kiss my vote goodbye.

Like writer Ross Belano said, I thought it was ironic that you gave your speech today from the Truman Library. I mean wasn't he [Truman] the President who ordered the bomb? Yes, I think he was. You know the bomb don't you "O" man? The one that was dropped that faithful August 6th morning that killed over 100,000 Japanese, including women and children? Those poor people. But hey, I don't think they were patriots, so serve them right.

"I remember listening to my grandmother telling stories about her work on a bomber assembly-line during World War II. I remember my grandfather handing me his dog tags from his time in Patton's Army, and understanding that his defense of this country marked one of his greatest sources of pride. That's my idea of America.."

Yeah it's mine too.

I'm disappointed that he started wearing the flag pin, that will win him no points with the patriot games crowd and it will lose him points with everyone else.

btw Don't feel to sorry for the Japanese Field, they killed and starved to death thousands of our POWs and butchered millions in China and Asia.

True, but their women and kids didn't.

I couldn't give a rat's ass about his lapel flag pin. Wear it or don't wear it. It doesn't matter.

I'm much more worried about Obama's tacit support for the Telecom Immunity bill and gun control.

I know Democrats must run to the center if they want to get elected but don't run so far, Barack, that you wind up on the right.

Number three I disagree with you on. Why is legal immigration enforcement now wrong? I don't understand. Isn't this our country or am I being too patriotic for YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First it's the lapel pin Chris, then it's the telecom bill, the slow lurch to the right. Your right about the women and children Field but it didn't keep us from killin a million German civilians in bombing raids either

He could have declared his patriotism without wearing that damned flag lapel pin, and it still wouldn't make any difference to the ReThugs whining.

The "O" man better learn it's not what they call you; it's what you're going to answer to.

It's cool, Field. I'm usually sympathetic to libertarian ideals. I don't think we're politically evolved enough at this point in time for that to work unless we go with pure consumption tax, not likely.

What he also said:
He called Martin Luther King Jr. and the Abu Ghraib whistleblower patriots for pointing out injustice, and he quoted Missourian Mark Twain to applause, saying: “Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.”

Obama also linked the today’s debate about patriotism to the “culture wars of the 1960s,” as he distanced himself from an attack made last fall by the liberal group MoveOn.org on Gen. David Petraeus.

"All too often our politics still seems trapped in these old, threadbare arguments -- a fact most evident during our recent debates about the war in Iraq, when those who opposed administration policy were tagged by some as unpatriotic, and a general providing his best counsel on how to move forward in Iraq was accused of betrayal,” he said. “Given the enormous challenges that lie before us, we can no longer afford these divisions. “

Field, cut him some slack... he is dealing with a whisper campaign that he is not really American, that he a manchurian candidate....

I know, any thinking person would know this is crap... But unfortunately, after reading some of the articles where they are quoting "middle america" who say they are confused because they read that it is not true in the papers, but their friends and family keep repeating the lie.... and they dont see their friends, neighbors and family as liars.

Unfairly, he has more to overcome on this than he should.

Kellybelle said...

Sigh...it's sad that he has to do all this. But he does. If his name were Brad Harold Overton and he was raised in St.Louis, I'd be disappointed. But he's Barack Hussein Obama from Hawaii and Indonesia. People still believe he's a Muslim! One false move and he'll be swiftboated like nobody's business.

Just let him get in the Oval Office. If he starts wussing out there, that's a problem. But now, it's not real; it's just politics.

Sigh.

And he will be voting and Mr. OBAMA will have to convince him and the like minds...so I say MR. OBAMA put the pin on and get an Uncle Sam costume if you gotta. Obama has to do what he has to do... because of the political and social climate. I sympathize to some extent. He has no choice but to dance and perform on demand, like a wind-up toy. If he doesn't, his campaign will be over.

It does make me a little nervous though... especially his showboating for AIPAC (which is why I can't embrace him wholeheartedly). But I understand that he has to play this role. Sometimes you have to play the game in order to change it.

I'm willing to wait and see what he actually does once he gets into the White House. The priviledged white men before him (with a few exceptions) have been given a free pass and have been annointed one after the other. So Obama deserves a chance to get into office and perform. But I will be pissed if we get to 2012 and it is still business as usual. .... $2000 per plate dinners, lobbyists running everything from behind the scenes...politicians being bought, scandal and corruption everywhere, citizens with absolutely no access to their public officials (only lobbyists and the wealthy having access), wars over nonsense, no comprehensive healthcare system, an idiotic energy policy, no effort to at least start the process of leaving Iraq, etc etc etc.

I'm just concerned that things are so screwed up right now that it may not be possible for him to deliver on all of the priorities in his platform that people want, at least not by the end of his first term.

Brother Field.. Bro O is in waters without a life-jacket. He is grabbing anything to keep afloat. It hard seeing a drowning man go down. The lapel pin and etc, I am disappointed that he went against his orignal premise. One thing I noticed is that historically Black men/people have never had a means to truly show patriotism. The dominate race have had VFWs/Amer Legions. Black veterans by numbers have not participated. When we were wearing the X (Malcomn) tee shirts, maybe we should have worn Amer. flags on our chest. Bro O never having been in the military maybe should have seen this one coming. I believe he may have felled in that trap of "we all in this together". Surly he should have someone on staff to tell him how a Black man is precieved here on the mainland. Hell, even the Daughters of The Confederate are seen as patriots.

Anonymous said...

Why on earth in this day and age would people still fret over whether or not someone wears a flag pin??????? That's utterly absurd.

My second point...Wesley Clark was right in what he said. Just because you served in the military does not mean you are owed the presidency. There is a reason why all Presidents must be a civilian as opposed to a military commander.

Anonymous said...

And another thing, there are many ways to express your patriotism without serving in the military.
Cindy Sheehan who protested against this illegal war is a true patriot.

Anyone willing to call out their government when it is doing wrong is a true patriot.

And now we see so clearly... the O-ster is ready to step up and claim his OSCAR for "best actor" in the role of a white man pretending to be a black man in his bid for POTUS...

Aren't we all a bit tired of gagging at his pathetic people-pleasing and behind-kissing?? Aren't we?

What's next?? A photo op with Barry mowing the lawn at the Clinton's house with a smile on his face waving a checkbook to pay all the bills she racked up slandering him??

It's traditional for Dems to touch base with Harry Truman. Harry also issued an executive order to integrate the military, but the military dithered until Korea forced them to stick Charlie Rangel in a foxhole.

Put yourself in Truman's shoes in 1945. Think what happened on Okinawa & imagine that going on for another two years. Maybe it would have, maybe it wouldn't. But we were faced with immediately shipping our war weary armies from Europe to the other side of the world. All our allies were physically & financially worn out.

I swear. Some of you all are never happy. The man is ahead in the polls and has a pretty good movement going on, yet I swear when I read the comments on blogs and forums you'd think the man was down by 20 points. Some of you all have to accept the fact that Obama isn't going to change the world. He's only one man...and on top of that, he's not President yet. I mean shit, when you get the idiots at a debate to ask you in front of a national audience why you don't wear a flag pin...you realize that 'shit, it's probably just easier to put one on'.

I've said it before, but Obama is a politician so I expect him to do some dancing and some shifting of positions. It comes with the job. He's a fresh face in politics and does bring some new ideas but at the same time, let's be real, most Americans are afraid of drastic change. He's been labeled the most liberal senator in Congress...so when running a General campaign, of course he's going to move to the center. I mean "Duh". It's called strategy. Obama's betting that he'll keep his supporters and now he's trying to win over Clinton supporters, independents and disgruntled republicans.

He did not say these things. His record does not reflect someone who believes these things.....

I am an activist. When activists get together to plan something, we use consensus, not majority rule. In using consensus, we seek ALL perspectives, we listen to all concerns and we try to include all folks input into what needs to be done.

Seems to me, that is what Obama is doing right now. He is seeking to reach out to those whom I may not agree with on everything, but he is right in that we ALL have common concerns.... we ALL want a cleaner environment, we all want a quality education for our children, safety in our homes and communities, health care available when we are sick or injured. And, I think most Americans recognize that the infrastructure of this country needs serious repair and priority for sustainable, renewable energy.

So, while it makes me uncomfortable to see him reaching out to constituencies that have different beliefs than me.... I also know that if he is to accomplish what he says he wants to... that is required.

And, if he doesn't, you will see me in the streets protesting, agitating and organizing to challenge him.

Obama's comments of late are having the same "drip-drip" effect on me, too, Field. Whenever he is attempting to appeal to a constituency whose ideas I detest, I tend to rationalize that he's doing so only to get elected, because he has to. But I am reminded that that kind of cherry-picking of points I think he really believes and others I think he does not can also be identified sheer self-projection. And he has been more than ever a site for projection lately.

Of course I'll vote for him, of course I hope he wins, of course if he doesn't, I'll be horrified.

But I hope that he really is a transformational politician, one who is attempting to impress upon voters that real change happens from the bottom up, that a president can and will not do more than protect the status quo unless the populous is loudly and actively involved. I hope. But the right wing rhetoric is disappointing me. That he is currently 15 points ahead means that he can afford to be much more progressive than he is.

There are a lot of religions out there and the pious white evangelical movement is just one. So get over it!

Christopher said...

Do you like George Bush's faith-based initiatives?

So does Barack Obama.

Bush’s controversial program of steering Federal dollars to faith-based social service programs and religious groups has earned him the ire of many who say the program is a violation of the ‘Separation of Church and State’ doctrine.

But in a move to appeal to Bible-thumping, evangelical voters, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is announcing plans that would expand Bush’s faith-based program to get religious charities more involved in anti-poverty programs, food banks, and youth ministries.

Obama will make today at Eastside Community Ministry in Zanesville, Ohio:

“The challenges we face today, from putting people back to work to improving our schools, from saving our planet to combating HIV/AIDS to ending genocide, are simply too big for government to solve alone. We need all hands on deck.”

Ostensibly, the difference between Bush and Obama’s appproaches to faith-based initiatives is in Obama’s case, Obama does not support requiring religious tests for aid recipients nor using Federal money to proselytize. Still though, the Federal dollars in religious programs is troubling to many who believe the separation of church and state is being violated by such programs.

David Petraeus. ...he is dealing with a whisper campaign that he is not really American, that he a manchurian candidate....

In my view, that statement also comes from a real part of his actual political perspective. I don't have it in front of me now, but I am pretty sure that he discusses this thing about the 60s in the book he wrote that was published in 2005, Audacity of Hope.

To my eyes, that statement reflects a particular kind of subtlety in his analysis -- a subtlety that seems to evade the perception of progressives and other leftists who can't take in new information if it's in categories outside the existing worldview.

So many people, right AND left, seem to be looking at Senator Obama through their own pre-set filters rather than looking at what he actually says, does and is about.

(Jody, this is not specifically about you! Just got sparked by your comment)

And speaking of your comments, Jody,. I love what you said here: In using consensus, we seek ALL perspectives, we listen to all concerns and we try to include all folks input into what needs to be done.

Seems to me, that is what Obama is doing right now. I see this focus on bringing things in for consensus in what he does and have noticed it for quite some time now. This approach is well outside of the good guys/bad guys worldview animating much of the left in this country, which IMO is sad.

But then, I think that some people don't want to actually deal with the fact that they are part of a nation that includes people who don't agree with them except to the extent that they should educate those other people to see "the truth" that they in their superior vision can see better.

What I find sad is that some Americans believe that by wearing flag on their lapels or blowing in the breeze on their that somehow makes you patriotic, and if you were to ask the the average American probably could not tell you what the red and white stripes represent on the flag, or know their rights as citizens. The audacity. They criticized Barack Obama is not patriotic which is another way of saying that he is second class citizen and does not consider him an American.

If I am going to walk around with a symbol, it should be the Constitution as it is the foundation of the country, but flags are just so much better to wave and it does not require reading. I am with the late George Carlin when he said that Americans are stupid. It's a sad commentary, but it is true. Despite the modern technology available to get information, and people still do not make use of it. However, the continue with the mantra we are the best country in the world, but I am with the opinion of Bill Maher when he said that "we are not on a build to the 21st century, we are on a bus to Atlantic City with a roll of quarters.

We paid more attention to trifling details such boycotting a Batman film when it used mechanical penguins and step over a homeless person on the way to the boycott. We pay attention to flag burning and not notice that our civil liberties are deteriorating.

Field, unfortunately, you have to speak to addled and feeble-minded Americans in the simple terms they can comprehend, treat as if they are in kindergarten (and that's insult really to the to the little ones), and supply them with visual aid so you do not taxed their brains with even hint of critical thinking. Aargh!!! The pandering, the little two stepping and fetching, I can't stand it. This is House Negro behavior. This is some bad JuJu fer sure. But, if you're going to take care of all this, I trust it to your big shoulders to deliver us from evil.

And, for your info, I did not drink the O-Aid. I really believed that he was our only salvation against the big porkin' old (and Edwards) white men against the world. After all, we do need a fresh face in these days of multi-color relations.

Sounds like a movie cartoon. Perhaps it has become one.

Off topic,

As some of you all know, I have to move to Mississippi. I am cancer girl, so do any of you all know where I can find a good general practioner's physician's assistant or doctor in the Biloxi area? I can't stand the thought of leaving Philly and all of my great doctors, especially my PA, who is God's little sweet crazy angel. Shout out to Laurel Green, the greatest little pixie PA in the world!!!

I am not too familiar with that area (Biloxi) but I will keep my ear to the ground for you.

Shoot me an e-mail sometime if you want to just holla at a brotha. [fnblg@yahoo.com]

You are right.

Wesley Clark COULD have attacked McCain on MANY fronts. Why do Dems do crap the HARD way. He COULD have nailed McCain for:
a) NOT supporting the Modern GI Bill
b) NOT even showing up to vote for it
c) LYING that he had had anything to do with it.

Clark would have been the perfect choice to attack McCain on the TRUTH of McCain's voting record with regards to soldier issues - which is HORRIBLE.

Christopher,

I have no problem with this, because Obama's beginning in Community Organizing was through a ' faith-based' group.
