Who is preventing us from being "post-racial"?

This is a very polarizing time in America, and unfortunately the trial of a certain neighborhood vigilante in Florida is only going to make things worse.

As black folks we are intrigued by our fellow citizens in the majority population who have a great amount of hostility and distaste for all things black, so whenever I find an article that can enlighten us or help us understand that mindset l feel compelled to share.

This one comes from a white woman living in the South who tries her best to explain some white folks in "post racial" America.

"CBS Charlotte) — Racism is an issue that continues to persist in our country because after centuries of slavery and oppression amongst the African-American population, it is deeply ingrained in American history.

And while most of us are familiar with slavery and oppression in American history, according to a study conducted by Tufts University’s School of Arts and Sciences and Harvard Business School, some white Americans believe that they are the victims of reverse racism.

The study confirms that African-Americans and white Americans believe that racism against African-Americans has decreased over the last 60 years, but white people in the study group believe that they are racially targeted more than black people. According to the study, on average, whites rated anti-white bias as more prevalent in the 2000s than anti-black bias — by more than a full point on the 10-point scale.

Did I miss something here? If I wasn’t an active member of society, I might believe this study to be true — oh wait, no I wouldn’t.

It’s important to note that racism against white Americans is rare. Is it possible that other factors exist that were not brought to light by this study?

Indeed. White Americans can not truly call something racism, unless they know without a question of a doubt that they are being racially targeted. Furthermore, how often do you hear on the news that a white American was targeted for being white? Racism is when a person is discriminated against purely on the basis of their skin color.  Discrimination can be based on other things, such as a persons gender, sex, income, etc.

In contrast, even in 2013, African-Americans are still victims of racial profiling and racism. I have personally witnessed such occurrences on many occasions. A few months ago, I was talking with an African-American homeless man in Uptown Charlotte. A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer targeted the homeless man and began following us around. Once we were out of the officers sight, he turned his police lights on, turned around, and drove up to us and asked if I was in danger.

I was irritated by the police officer, to say the least. I knew as soon as he asked the question, that the homeless man that I was speaking with was the victim of racial profiling. The CMPD officer falsely assumed that I was “in danger” because I was a white woman, talking to a black man. After the police officer reluctantly drove away, I asked the homeless man how often he was the victim of racial profiling. His response was disheartening, “every day.” Moreover, the homeless man was so accepting of being a victim of racial profiling. In his eyes, it was okay for the CMPD to profile him because he is black and homeless. But, in my eyes, this isn’t okay — and as culturally diverse as the city of Charlotte is, African-Americans are still targeted because of their skin color. Now ask yourself, have you ever truly witnessed reverse racism or reverse racial profiling? Have you ever seen a police officer approach a white man who was conversing with a black woman? I sure haven’t!

On a national level, statistically, African-Americans have far less opportunities handed to them, they generate less income than white Americans, own less homes, and have a much higher chance of living in poverty than non-black Americans. In spite of this, I still have never witnessed an African-American racially targeting a white American for being “more privileged” than they are. While I’m sure that there are some black Americans who may not particularly care for white Americans, I cannot fathom that racism against whites is more prevalent than racism against blacks. Additionally, if African-Americans were to racially target white Americans, they lack a system of organized support behind them. However, white Americans who are racist or participate in racially fueled acts of violence, can do so knowing that the KKK will support their “efforts.”

The day that President Barack Obama was elected President of the United States should have been a turning point for our nation. After all, Obama had to break through several barriers and overcome adversity to rise to the top. But, he did so with sheer guts and determination, and despite whether you agree with the way he runs our country or not, he paved the way for other black Americans to believe that they can one day become the President of the United States. Even in his second term, Obama still receives around 30 death threats each day, and many of these threats are fueled by racism.

Before I sat down to write this article, I thought about how one of my co-workers, who is African-American, would be perceived if she wrote this article. Undoubtedly, she’d be called a “racist.” To me, that’s a clear indication that our society still needs to confront the stereotypes and history that surrounds us."

I do have a question. I am wondering the age, education and socio-economic background of the people in the study. As in studies of this kind, one has also look how the questions were phased. Some of the people in the study could be anachronisms like Paula Deen who have not caught up with living in the 21st century. I wonder if the study included the Millennials, who are the under the age of 30 have a very different perspective. As I write this, I have more questions than a opinion. I believe that there's still this group-think about racism, but wonder if these people will hard on tighter to their beliefs as the old economy is dying and a new economy coming into play where everyone is trying to figure out where he or she fit. I do have one thought, these people in the study will have to come to a new reality that race isn't their problem and look at what's really happening being that the world is changing and it's not looking back. They have will have to either go along with the change or be left behind. After all, there are emerging opportunities, but it will require a person to change his or her mindset as the days of working in a factory or office doing rote activities is becoming obsolete. As I write this, I am watching the Aspen Institute, and Elaine Chao from the Heritage Foundation who saying that the economy is coming back, but not in way she believes. I'm digressing, that's another conversation for another day.

It’s important to note that racism against white Americans is rare.

No it isn't, it is codified into the Law of the Land. Whites are the only group that it is legal to discriminate against in hiring or in school admissions; indeed it is mandated.

Racist attacks against whites are rampant in America. Every day, in every major city in America, groups of blacks are randomly attacking white people expressly because they are white.

There hasn't been a mob of white people attacking blacks in over half a century, but black 'youth' mobs are beating up white people nearly every week somewhere in BRA.

You are living in the far past, Field.

Black people hate white people. No matter how much things change, how much is ground is given, even a black man in the White House, blacks will always hate whites for being white. It doesn't matter if you are Liberal or Conservative or if you have a Confederate flag or an Obama sticker on your car, black people will hate you. So much, that the minute they have the opportunity, they'll bash your brains in.

Everywhere, all over the world, it is the same story. There a billion negroes on this planet, and almost every one of them has their hand out to the white man. And still, the incessant charges of white racism are all that you hear.

I'm pretty certain that stories of "wildin'" went out of vogue in the late 80's, early 90's. Wasn't true then and it's not true now.

Hate is quite a strong word. I don't hate many people, but I do find mistrust appropriate.

It's hard to trust when you've been denied, disgraced, despised and disenfranchised. And yet somehow, I manage not to run out randomly attacking the the white people, even when I've been slighted for the 10th time for the day...

Bah whatever, I've put too much thought into answering this tripe.

Racism began with slavery. It continued with Jim Crow. It's a volatile mix of evil, fear and human indignation which is so outrageous against human dignity to be accepted by anyone under any pretext.

Racism is an ugly EVIL force that is moves on it own subconsciously, and will persist in America until its dying day. How does one trust the very one who thought of such evil through slavery and Jim Crow?

It's amazing how evil can take over the human mind and heart and 'justify' its existence. Just read the comments where Whites found themselves "justified" to insult, degrade and humiliate a young black frightened illiterate girl. Yet, they have the audacity to think Blacks should like or even love them? Nope, I don't think so.

If you ask a white person for specific examples in which they, personally, have been discriminated against or felt singled out for being white, you probably won't get much of an answer. Ever think a cop pulled you over because you're white? Nope. Ever go in a store & realized you were being followed by a clerk or security guy & thought it was because you were white? Nope. Ever had specific knowledge of a black person getting ahead of you for a job promotion because you were white? Nope.

Crackerass?

So you just discriminated against a white guy using a racial slur, when all he did was say you aren't so easy on the eyes. Sounds like a Black thing, any reality is met with charges of racism or racist slurs by you.

How can a white woman turn racist against a supposed white person and make racial slurs as if she were Black and then still claim she laughs at White racists, when you are a white racist pretending you are black in order to hurl racial slurs against a white?

In other words your all messed up in the head.

The writer's name is Nichole Jaworski. Reminds me of the time I worked in Wisconsin and witnessed my (German-American) boss mercilessly "kidding" his Polish employees with Polish jokes, insinuations, etc. It seemed so bizarre to me since Polish-American stereotypes were hardly much different than German-American stereotypes, and that I had never given any thought to the relative qualities of such ethnic groups. They both looked the same to me. Helped me to see what a cartoon white racism is, though unlike any convictions about Polish inferiority it doesn't go back to Europe but stays local, on this continent. Every American knows what slavery was, and whites can tell themselves that even a rich black man is probably descended from enslaved field hands, and that fuels the white-is-superior myth. Even though Obama's ancestors weren't slaves it doesn't matter. Now the stereotypes are self-perpetuating, since black economic justice seems further and further from realization.

God, I better stop. I'm depressing myself. Only ray of hope is the younger generation, the ones who grew up with millionaire ball players and rap superstars and black Hollywood stars. And their indifference to race is the best cause for encouragement.

Amerika won't be instructed or reasoned out of its racism; it'll just grow out of it. Eventually.

Some scholar (Andrew Hacker?) once observed that black racism couldn't exist unless blacks held the majority AND the power. Racism without power is just resentment, isolated prejudice. So what about African countries, where black Africans rule? Mugabe may have practiced a racism of sorts in Zimbabwe but only succeeded in guiding a mass exodus and ruining the country; other African nations might resent the white legacy of colonization but they're not that stupid. Even in black Africa whites have economic power, so you're not likely to see white racism anywhere on a large scale. Resentment? Sure, and justifiable. White racial profiling? Sure, humans being human. But not institutionalized (e.g., a police force), not political and not even pervasively social.

I prefer to distinguish between racism, the anti-black portion of the anti-worker policy of the U.S. government (throughout its existence) and prejudice, the individual manifestation of the effects of that implacable government policy. It is true that a prejudiced person can also (and with much justice) be termed a racist--see, for example, a pile of the comments above--but I think the distinction is worth making.

A friend of mine was an auto worker at South Gate, the Ford plant in Los Angeles. Throughout the 1940s and early 1950s, he was a prominent organizer of the UAW, until he was redbaited out of the union. (He was, as you might guess, white; and I would deem him majorly unprejudiced.) He observed "racist" white workers who were sufficiently anti-boss to spend an entire afternoon without specific orders, piling up and carefully cutting pieces of upholstery vinyl into one-inch squares, then tossing it into the waste bin. They looked busy, but their message was "F-word Ford." My friend was constantly trying to convince them not to hate the black workers at the plant. Then came a strike. Well, didn't the racist whites come up to my friend and say, "You're the union leader. You make sure you get those [N-words] out on the line!" An example of anti-boss feeling trumping anti-black feeling. It is through experiences like this that people of all sorts learn who their allies can be and how to fight together against their common enemies.

That may be the best we can expect. Some prejudices run very deep, as deep, say, as the idea of "family" (and if you look at the SCOTUS decisions on gay marriage, you can see two things: the idea of "family" is still with us, and, wow, is it being changed in practice!). Every backward idea is subject to questioning as people struggle for what they need: dignity, respect, and a living.

So, whites who claim that blacks are "racist" don't know the meaning of the term. African-Americans do not own and control a government of their own that could (in the unlikely event that racism were a desideratum) be "racist" in all its policies. The boss class is racist. Non-boss people may be prejudiced so badly that they form lynch mobs, but the real racism comes from the top. I find the distinction between the two terms very useful in thinking about history.

African-American leftists and their liberal white knights like little better than to wax nostalgic about the dangers of 19th century lynching while remaining utterly silent about 21st century savagery that is now seen everywhere from Africa to Europe and the Americas.

It's not an accident that the first thing the US government did once de Klerk was elected and it became obvious that apartheid was coming to an end was to arrange for the removal of South Africa's nuclear weapons from its arsenal and the decommissioning of the weapons development program. This was because both the US and the de Klerk administration knew the ANC government could not be trusted to behave responsibly with them and there was a real risk that they would be used against the Boers or Zimbabwe.

FrontPage reported in 2012: "There are now white refugee camps in South Africa with an estimated 300,000 or 7 percent of the white population living in tent cities and shacks. If any other ethnic group or race were on the receiving end of such treatment, it would be denounced as ethnic cleansing. Dr. Stanton of Genocide Watch, a respected human rights organization, has stated that the white population of South Africa is now in the sixth of the center’s eight stages of genocide. That sixth stage is defined as “Preparation.”"

Keep that in mind as you hear the usual suspects encouraging you to celebrate the wonders of diversity. Because historically, diversity has been a precursor to genocide. And if Malema comes to power and he succeeds in following the example set by Mugabe's Zimbabwe, don't spare South Africa an ounce of sympathy once his goal is achieved as people who are absolutely every bit as civilized as everyone else on the planet mysteriously turn out to be unable to maintain an existing agricultural system capable of feeding the country for inexplicable reasons that no rational mind could possibly discern.

And Malema isn't merely thinking of South Africa when he encourages blacks to breed for the cause of global revolution. "We want to see many kids, why? Because we must reproduce ourselves. For our ideas to be sustainable, we have to reproduce ourselves. In the whole of Africa, we are not more than one billion and the world has seven billion people. In Africa we have not more than one billion people… facing more than six billion. We have to be half of that so that our ideas can dominate. I know that in some instances size does not matter… but when it comes to a revolution, size matters."

The multiculturalists and devotees of St. Diversity think that it doesn't matter if America loses its white majority. They don't understand what Malema does, which is that demographics is destiny.

Blacks will be a minority in the New America too. As awful as you think white people are, I doubt the new majority will have much much sympathy for black problems.

3. How is common prejudice not linked to racism (from your comment it seems you don't consider prejudice to be racism)? My preconceived ideas about people based on their appearance inevitably leads to at least some behaviors which inure to the detriment of others. For example, even small amounts of fear and distrust can be seen by the discerning person, imho. This has a harmful effect on the person being distrusted. That may seem minor, but accumulated effects like this amount to the racism experienced by African Americans (and women, and gays, and other minorities).

Vérité Parlant said...

Whites who use phrases such as reverse discrimination make me question their intelligence. I think that they do not understand the difference racism and bigotry. Anyone can be a bigot, but in order for any group to effectively practice racism, that group must control most of the money and resources of a nation as well as the lion's share of society's systems of power. It takes power to discriminate against people in hiring, firing, healthcare, and channels to wealth accumulation. But many whites can't even recall having a black supervisor more than once in their lifetimes much less a black person holding the lien on their property or the keys to their freedom from whatever.

When whites can prove that they as a group no longer control the majority of almost everything in this country, then their claims of reverse discrimination may become credible. Until then, those whites who think they're suffering at the hands of some mythical black power structure need to stop whining and start working for more justice and fairness in America overall. Whatever they deem to be the acceptable level of economic suffering for people of color will one day be the acceptable level of suffering for all Americans, including white people. If they work toward lessening such burdens, then, if the day should ever come that they find themselves out of power, perhaps the folks on top will be kinder to them than they have been to others. I'll be long dead by the time white people can claim to not be spectacularly privileged, but karma is karma, folks.

And I'm not talking about all whites here, just those who whine that they've suffered discrimination or have been victims via some tangible loss created by people of color. From what I've observed, whatever losses they've sustained are the result of their own complicity with big business and the politicians who protect it, Democratic and Republican.

I never knew the level of idiocracy in society. I was the only white kid on my block, bus, and only one of three in school. I was teased and beaten for being white. Disctimated against and left out by my friends parents. Despite this I don't get upset because I know it happens across the board everyday. I do however get upset when people try to tell me it didn't happen or matter. Or that I deserved it. how do we stop racism? stop talking about it, don't judge others, and don't open our childrens minds to it.
