Oil and Arlen.

There are a couple of big elections going on here in Pennsylvania. One, of course, is for Arlen Specter's senate seat, and the other is for the seat recently vacated by the now deceased, John Murtha. It's a big deal to some. Elections with national implications they are saying. But honestly, I could care less.

It won't make a difference, there is an anti- incumbency mood in A-merry-ca and whoever is sitting in Washington now should be sweating more than Mike Tyson at a spelling bee. Dem or repub, it doesn't matter, A-merry-cans, for whatever reason, are angry. They think that they are losing their country and they don't like it.

And speaking of losing our country; unfortunately there is something more important and earth shaking going in in A-merry-ca right now. Thanks to corporate greed and and politrickster enablers, the Gulf Of Mexico is looking like the bottom of a frying pan at a southern fish fry. And sadly, it looks like it's getting worse. The folks over at BP have lied and covered up as long as they can, but now, as the saying goes, "the jig us up". Five thousand barrels of oil per day into the ocean is no joke. When this is all said and done Tony Hayward might rank right up there with O.J. as one of the most despised men in A-merry-can history.

Our conservative friends who want businesses to do their thing without any regulations should all be rethinking their positions right now. But of course we know that they won't. They would rather score cheap political points. An ecological disaster is right at our door step and if you think you hear crickets you might be right. But take heart my conservative friends, I have found a link with some talking points to help you folks get through this thing.

Of course the sound of crickets would actually be better than listening to this nut put his two cents into the mix.

"When do we ask the Sierra Club to pick up the tab for this leak?" Limbaugh asked, and then proceeded to answer. Here's his logic: The environmental group has been driving oil producers off the land to "way, way, way offshore," into more high-risk situations. According to Limbaugh, the oil companies have had no choice but to drill for oil one mile underwater."

Huh? On second thought, maybe elections are important after all.

Hmm, the Obama admin gave them a pass on environment impact study and were preparing to give BP an environmental award before this happened.

It's a freaking disaster, no doubt. The islands and marshes around the delta are delicate and affect fishing far, far away. Sandbars are my favorite places to waste a day. Wouldn't be much fun without wildlife though.

Field never gets tired of slaying straw men. Nobody is arguing they "want businesses to do their thing without any regulations". Would "regulations" have prevented this disaster? This is cutting-edge technolgy. Maybe we should wait until the investigation is complete beofre we decide why this happened. Accidents happen. Lessons learned from this tragedy will be used to change current regulations and practices, and we will go on drilling for oil offshore.

Sorry, szpork, the Obama administration DID NOT give them a pass; this mess started under (drum roll)--the BUSH administration. The leader of one of those agencies just quit, and quite frankly, Salazar needs to "resign", because from what I understand, he's mighty cozy with the Oily Industry.

@The Second Anon, from the top:

No, regulations would not, and did not, prevent this disaster, but the enforcement of the regulations already in place would have.

Minerals Management Service (MMS) is handing out permits without the requisite environmental impact reports.

Such a report might have prevented this disaster--simply by showing that the impact to the environment was too prohibitive, and the cost of cleaning up a catastrophic spill, equally prohibitive.

You, betcha, "cutting edge technology," untested, with fail-safe measures that was equally untested, and poorly inspected, with pressure tests conducted half the time by BP, and regulators the other half.

Oh, yeah, there was an automatic blowout preventer that failed, too.

Drilling in deep waters will cut gasoline cost a mere 3 cents by 2020. For a mere 3 cents we're willing to destroy our fragile wetlands, fisheries, and other aquatic life, as well as miles and miles of coastal land.

The tradeoff is too costly. But we Americans will stand by, and do little, or nothing, believing that gasoline shortages are a worse calamity: we won't be able to drive our gas guzzlers on the weekend to all those fun places.

What we have is a "cutting edge" disaster, caused by a lack of "cutting edge" supervision, all for the purpose of feeding a "cutting edge" greed, for oil consumption, and a steady flow of that green stuff.

"Accidents happen."

Yeah, they do. They happen often. If a piano falls from a 12 story building on the top of your head as you walk by, that's an accident.

If someone's brakes fail, and they collide head-on into your car without warning, that, too, is accident.

Drilling a mile down in deep water, without adequate means to prevent an environmental disaster of a magnitude we're currently seeing, where 11 human beings lost their lives, as a result of an oil rig explosion--that's not an accident.

It's a disaster, but it's not an accident.

It's human error, but it's not an accident.

It's human stupidity, but it's not an accident.

It's driven by human greed, but it's not an accident.

And were we a smarter species, it wouldn't have happened at all, because we wouldn't have drilled out that far into the Gulf in the first place, and would have, years ago, changed our habits, and behaviors, to create a healthier, and more life-sustaining environment, and life for ourselves on this planet.

Corporate Greed huh?

Just let the aggregate supply of oil in relation to the DEMAND for it by ABSTRACT American Theorists like yourself get out of alignment.

THEN we will see if it is just 'Corporate Greed' that is the problem.

Interestingly enough - when it comes to the violence among the Drug Gangs near the US-Mexico Border - the SUPPLIERS of Drugs - Hillary Clinton blames the CONSUMERS OF DRUGS in the USA.

When it comes to going out to sea to obtain OIL - the wise and wily Filled Negro blames the OIL COMPANIES.

I would love to see your lifestyle set back to that of a mountain man in Sav-La Mar. Absent access to abundant fuel - he is forced to live closer to the land.

How might this impact your distribution of (what you call) "justice"?

Will you be able to make that arraignment hearing at 10am when your gas tank is empty and you need to walk to the closest gas station where there is a long line?

Will you say that it is UNCONSTITUTIONAL for the County Sheriff who can no longer afford the diesel fuel for the bus that takes criminal defendants from the Jail to the Court every day, thus they are shackled at the feet and made to walk under armed guard. (Yes - I see the caravan of Fulton County Sheriff vehicles making this run every day down Northside DR near the Georgia Dome - so I know it happens)

Progressive-Fundamentalists are funny to me.
I sign up for AFL-CIO and "Southern Poverty Law Center" e-mail blasts, to name a few. Right now the Left is protesting at Wall Street and the other day "K-Street" (where the lobbyists are). The NAACP joined with them. Those protests that HAD BEEN waged against the government just a few short years ago are now waged IN DEFENSE OF THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT.

Just imagine that 2 weeks after evil Bush had opened up the Gulf to new oil drilling - an oil spill happened.

I bet that the 'Tar Baby' pictures that flooded out where this WHITE MAN was covered with oil would not raise the ire of RACISM that would be the case if it was done to Obama.

For anyone that thinks this was an unforseeable accident, I encourage you to go to the 60 Minutes website and read the story of Mr. Williams, the electrical engineer who was on the rig and explains WHY this happened. According to him, there were warning signs, but BP chose to make short cuts that caused this catastrophe. This is not from Greenpeace, or The Sierra Club. This is from a survivor who witnessed chunks of the seal coming up days before. He witnessed a meeting where BP insisted on speeding up the process using unsafe means.... This could have been prevented, but according to Mr. Williams, maximizing profits was the motive for the short cuts. FYI, this is negligence and I sincerely hope the US Justice Dept will be looking at both criminal and civil charges.

Its safe to say that both left and right "Politrickster Enablers" (as you so eloquently called them) are responsible for this Gulf Coast oil slick mess.

What's even worse is that both are attempting to use this tragedy for political gain.

The Left intentionally sits back waiting to see how bad things will get before they step in to help fix it so they can blame the Right for boldly and openly kissing Corporate America's A__.

(At least that appears to be Obama's strategy)

The Right than blames the Left for not moving quickly enough to help solve this problem and for kissing Corporate America's A___ under the table.

Neither side is 100% legit!

Neither side is doing a darn thing or at least not nearly enough, to help heal our nation.

This explains why Incumbents are in deep sh__ this year.

How can win back the trust of American voters?

Stop the lame rhetoric, stop the lies, quit the finger pointing, drop the phoniness, lay aside the gimmicks, stop kissing Corporate America's A___ and get about the business of fixing what ails our country...TOGETHER.

Laurel,

Perhaps you should read some non-political engineering sources. The cause may have been as result of political will, but solving the physical problem of the oil gushing into the ocean is a technical problem. If it ever stops it may take many years to clean it up.

I know in the 21th century people seems to think that technology can solve all problems and in time it may solve many more, but technology isn't omnipotent. That is why we must not become complacent in believing, that if we would just elect the right representative, we could get things done. As citizens we have to become literate and specifically scientifically literate, so that we can be knowledgeable and can push the politicians to make and enforce the right laws and choices before catastrophes happen. We as citizens have to make good choices. There have been some groups who have challenged the off shore drilling, but has the public supported them. No, because it has to some become an America right to drive that gas guzzling vehicle and being a conservationist is a commie ideal.

Limbaugh was right when he said the Sierra Club is the reason oil companies are looking for oil in deep water.

If oil companies were able to drill in all the obvious places -- the places in the US where oil is known to exist and is easiest to extract -- the US would have higher domestic employment in the oil industry, lower demand for imported oil and an easier time of legislating effective safety rules.

Moerover, increasing domestic oil production leads to increasing domestic tax revenue.

For some reaon all the benefits of enhancing our energy industry drive ignorant people out of their minds. Given the anger of some anti-oil people, you would think that murderous crowds would gather around the corporate offices of tobacco companies.

However, no politician wants to risk losing all those tobacco taxes by somehow actually STOPPING tobacco companies from marketing a product that ONLY destroys lungs and hearts.

Imagine. A product that achieves only one thing -- destruction of human health -- is embraced by 50 million smokers and an entire nation of people who see taxing addicts as the way to pay our national bills.

But when it comes to oil -- essential to prosperity and growth -- there is outrage.

no_slappz said...

hathor, you wrote:

The usual nonsense and claptrap. The WORLD consumes 85 MILLION BARRELS of oil A DAY. That number is expected to hit 110 million barrels a day in the next couple of decades.

When another BILLION Chinese and another BILLION Indians get their first cars -- which will probably travel 50 or 60 miles per gallon -- oil consumption will rise in tandem.

Cars. The GLOBAL total of cars today is about 750 million. It is estimated the number will hit 3 BILLION by 2050. Thus, gasoline use is heading one way -- up.

Without revenue from oil, Nigeria has NOTHING. The same is true for the middle east muslim oil nations. The only source of revenue they have is OIL.

Thus, there is ZERO chance oil-producing nations will support changes that hurt their economies.

BP will cap the leak in the Gulf and the industry will learn valuable lessons for next time. A year from now only the lawsuits will linger.

It is a bit early to be celebrating teabagger "victories".

Rand Paul did win his party primary in KY, to the consternation of the GOP, but this doesn't tell the whole story. Paul's opponent Jack Conway, a liberal Democrat, collected about 22,000 more votes than Paul, and Democrats in general garnered about 170,000 more total votes than Republicans. The real test will be in November.

Murtha's seat went to Mark Critz, a longtime staffer for Murtha. The 'bagger candidate, Tim Burns, was a flop despite heavy support from the RNC and favorable media coverage from their propaganda machine (Faux Noise). Hip Hop Mike even guaranteed a Burn's victory. To the local 'baggers this was a referendum on "Obamacare".

Those were the first two that come to mind, but the point is that the teabaggers are far from being game changers and are little more than pawns for the GOP.

AB - I've come to realize that you follow the logic that 'The enemy of my enemy is my friend'. The Tea Party folks hate Obama, you hate Obama -- let's party.

But that simply doesn't make sense. Your reasons for disagree with the President at their core vastly different and represent completely different points of view. You don't agree with Obama because he's a 'Corporate Green' -- a DLC-type moderate who is doing everything to keep status quo. If anything, you would want a hard push to the Left. The Tea Party oppose Obama because a) he's Black and b) he might actual do something to help Blacks, Latinos, Gays and well, anyone these folks don't want in their local mega-church. You're polar opposites.

You're a gay liberal Black public school teacher -- you are virtually everything the Tea Party fights against and blames for our current problems.

Seeing as these Tea Party folks have backed things that should any true Black Radical pause (the Tea Party were one of the main political forces behind the crazy Arizona Laws that racially profile Latinos and make Black Studies illegal), I find it hard to believe that progressives can make serious inroads into the Tea Party in its current formation.

Also, the Tea Party is fighting against any banking reform -- strange as many middle class white families lost their shirts in the Wall Street crash.

And my personal favorite -- death panels and health care reform. Its one thing to oppose the weird public/private brew that Obama and Co. came up with -- there's plenty to nitpick. But why aren't these guys backing public option, national health care or well, anything? Because they don't care -- statistically the Tea Party are middle to upper middle class white male baby boomers who have great health care. They simply don't care what happens to the rest of their fellow citizens.

Again, we build bridges -- but only with people who want to build a better tomorrow. And there are conservatives who are unselfish and caring people. But the tea party ramps up the most consistent POV of conservatives -- mean spirited and selfish.

btx3 said...

First - the Baggers were on the lose-lose side of the elections. What is happening is that as the Tea Baggers take over as the principal mouthpieces of the Republican Party, shifting it right, Independent and Republican Moderate voters are running away in droves.

Tea Baggery may get a a lot of titillation in the press, as the Faux News Ho's go into simultaneous orgasm at each manufactured talking point...

But the reality is going to be a number of 55-45 contests - Democrat wins.

Insofar as Drugbo's Oxycontin induced hallucinations about oil drilling - what can you say. The states at the epicenter of this disaster all (except Louisiana) have Republican led governments, and all are extremely business friendly to the Oil industry. One of the factors leading to the current disaster has been that cozy relationship, allowing BP (and others) to take increased risks.

As to having to drill deep, what part of "all the oil close to the coast has already been tapped" - does this fucking moron fail to understand?

mellaneous said...

Field its hard to believe that Limbaugh tried to blame the spill on environmentalists. How are they at fault for this? I don't get it, unless he is a hopeless ideologue who believes big business can do no wrong and any wrong they do is somehow the people's fault.

Because I don't follow his logic. Doesn't this spill actually support the notion that drilling closer to shore would be a bad idea.

No Slapz you are right and wrong at the same time. Oil is going to run out. It is not a infinite resource of course there is disagreement but there is consensus among geologists that the oil supply will not last forever.

I find it difficult to believe that anyone would find any reason to justify this spill and that includes our resident conservator CF. CF this exposes you as an ideologue. Folks drive gas powered cars because they are there. If there was governmental will and yes more people will, there would be more transportation that would be more environmental friendly.

But lets not pretend that the efforts to find other sources have not been submarined by the gas companies and the car manufacturers. "Who killed the electric car" is available now for all to see.

I read somewhere that there is another type of shut off valve that BP and other oil companies were required to have but BP did not have this safety requirement at this drilling site.

Jody I saw the 60 minutes piece as well and if what the worker is saying is true this would be similar to manslaughter because 11 workers died in the initial explosion which apparently could have been prevented.

Either way the company did not do all that it could to preserve the safety of the workers or the environment.

Agape I feel you, it was the power structure that ultimately is to blame for this. We keep hollering Democrat or Republican yet the same anti human and anti nature policies continue to be enforced under both parties.

Would it be too quaint to say that its time for real change, time for a real party of the people.

It's human error, but it's not an accident.
It's human stupidity, but it's not an accident.
It's driven by human greed, but it's not an accident.

Laurel- I was busy and didn't see your last response yesterday. But I wanted to commend you on being a bulldog when you have something to say and are trying to make your point.

But I wanted to point out that I never disagreed with you that there is colorism in the black community. I disagreed about the degree that it is an issue. And I agree that it is definitely a consideration in corporate America and in Hollywood to some extent.

I was also taking issue with your assumption that non elected folks like political leaders and preachers and artists were not a good example of your point.

I don't make decisions based on black folks color. And I think while there are lots of self hating folks who choose white or light skinned mates because of their sense of inferiority there are even more that choose light folks because that just happened to be who they loved.

I think we have to careful not to make too much of it. I read where you were talking about having some dark skinned relatives and you treat them the same as everyone else. To be honest I thought why would that ever cross one's mind? When I am dealing with black folks it never really crosses my mind to treat one different from the other.

And I am not ashamed of what goes on in the black community that would have me take responsibility for conditions I did not create.

Anyway we have much bigger fish to fry!

Hello Alicia,

Good to see you back girl.

Like I said yesterday, healthy debate is good for the soul.

Just remember:

"Personal Opinions are like a___h___les.

Everybody's got one and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks".

If someone doesn't like my opinion or your opinion, they can kick rocks!

This is Field's Blog.

Everyone else who visits and leaves comments are merely expressing their individual perspectives about life issues, mixed in with a little political flavor.

Neither you nor I have to agree with them.

If people take things personally that's their problem.

No can force an opinion down our throats.

We're all Adults.

If someone disagrees with our comments they should be mature enough to accept what we wrote and move on!

Again NO one should be attempting to force their opinions or individual perspectives down another Commentor's throat.

Some people are Cowards venting and saying stuff on Blogs they wouldn't dare mention at their places of Work or at home in front of their families.

Heck some of them are too afraid to even express their personal views on a Facebook page.

Thus they come on Field's Blog and let it all hang out.

Thank God we live in a country which affords us Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Expression.

I respect their right to express themselves and they should respect our right to disagree.

Nothing personal right? Just a fact of life.

If not than I repeat: They can kick rocks!

Have a Blessed day Alicia and just keep being you:)

On the campaign trail in 2007, Barack Obama flippantly declared that African Americans had “already come 90 percent of the way” to equality, with only 10 percent more to go. Whatever the future president was thinking, it wasn’t economics. The meter of progress is running backwards on Black America, toward greater inequality and relative poverty. Everything else you’ve heard is propaganda.

I'm NOT knocking Obama on all levels but I do question his policies and what appears to be his inability to govern.

For example:

Waiting a full year before deciding to help Main street has left many voters going huh?

Is this the "CHANGE" we voted for??

For a full year he fattened the pockets of Wall Street Bankers.

Suddenly after Scott Brown wins in Mass., and right before 2010 Mid-term elections, he reverses course and decides to punish the "Fat Cat" Bankers.

The Kagan choice is an awful one, and the response to the travesty shows the cracks in the teflon that are beginning to form. This nomination is an absolute disaster for black people, for civil rights, for the Democratic party and for democracy itself. The fact that Obama would even attempt to get support for such a bad nomination is proof that he succeeded in dismantling black politics and in making all progressive politics subservient to his whims. But every conqueror goes to the well once too often and sows the seeds of defeat. The nomination of someone whose record ought to make her anathema to his supporters is an insult. The insult is the direct result of silence and acquiescence on the part of those who should have spoken up against Obama policies much sooner. They too bear responsibility for this awful choice

Hopefully the disappointed Obamites will learn a lesson from their past behavior. Why shouldn’t their idol think that he can insult their intelligence? So far he has had no reason to believe that there are any limits on what he chooses to do. If there is anything positive in the Kagan nomination it is the possibility that the dysfunctional relationship between Obama and his supporters has finally ended.

If I created a report that detailed the RISK that if you get in your car and drive on the Interstate that YOU MIGHT HAVE AN ACCIDENT and get injured would this be enough to keep you in the house each and every day, NOT going to work despite the fact that you need the money?

I am not sure I understand some of you. (I am not blaming Obama when I say this but) IF even OBAMA can sit in the seat of power and come to recognize that with regard to meeting the DEMANDS for energy for America - he had to put aside the THEORY and open up the door to deep water drilling......does that make HIM a "sell out" or YOU look more like an abstract ideologue?

I saw a documentary on Whaling a few weeks ago. Back before man figured out what to do with petroleum and how to drill for it WHALE OIL was our man source of oil.

MEN boarded small boats and over time 50% of the boats would be lost at sea. A very risky job.

African who escaped their enslavement would become Whale hunters because at sea RANK went to those who were most COMPETENT, not just who was "whitest". (This is what the documentary said. If you disagree take it up with them).

People were opposed to the violence used against the whales and the loss of human life in pursuit of OIL.

Do you see that there are ECONOMIC TRADE OFFS regardless of the period of time and energy source in question?

Many of you maintain your MORAL SUPERIORITY mostly because YOU DON'T STAND ACCOUNTABLE FOR A REAL SOLUTION or ALTERNATIVE. The INDICTMENT is your most powerful weapon instead.

I wish, at least for some of you, I could rearrange your world so that your STANDARD OF LIVING is not one inch more than what the entirety of your THEORIES would provide to you.

[quote]
Oh, yeah, there was an automatic blowout preventer that failed, too.

So Black Diaspora - with BP ultimately having to pay more than $10 Billion or more for this incident - are you alleging that they had some 'death wish' and did all that was necessary to cause the spill?

Drilling in deep waters will cut gasoline cost a mere 3 cents by 2020. For a mere 3 cents we're willing to destroy our fragile wetlands, fisheries, and other aquatic life, as well as miles and miles of coastal land.

I WOULD LOVE FOR YOU TO PROVE THIS.

Gasoline fluctuates $0.03 with ease. Where did you pull this one from?

I just read that we should all prepare for $100 per barrel oil from here on out. I can't see where your $0.03 claim came from.

Punked by a Black Imposter.

What's a Black Imposter?

Someone who looks like us, talks like us, moves like us but in his heart despises us.

What's that you say?

If this is true than did he marry a Black Woman, who actually "looks Black" instead of like Beyonce?

Easy.

Obama is a skillful planner and Brilliant Politician who beat White America at their own game.

He knew the ONLY way a Black man could win the Oval Office gig was to fleece White Folks and get 97/98% of Black folks to vote for him.

What better to do that than portray the same type of Black family as the Huxtables.

The handsome, educated Black man married to the attractive, educated Black woman.

Better yet a Black woman who "looks Black" versus one who looks half-white.

Obama had to appease both White and Black voters to win.

After he won who has he appeased?

Certainly NOT the Black folks!

In fact he basically told us to "kiss his behind" by allowing us to suffer Unemployment at a rate of more than 20% nationwide.

55% in Baltimore & Detroit.

Everyone knows much of that high Unemployment (Blacks) was due to Racism NOT the Recession.

Southern School Districts are Re-Segregating Public Schools faster than you can say "Jim Crow".

Is Obama aware?

Yes just like all of the scared, selfish, greedy elected Black officials are aware.

What's being done to help us?

NOTHING!

This is what Black Voters get for electing Black Leaders for symbolic purposes and not demanding that they actually DO something for us.

Wake up Black Voters!

You've been punked.

In addition one of the D.C. City Councilmembers came on Matthews' show to discuss numerous complaints they received from Middle Class & Low Income Constituents questioning why 7 days after the Storm hit, their streets had NOT been plowed?

Wealthy D.C. Communities were plowed almost immediately but not Black communities.

Our Mayor Anthony Foxx (a friend of Fenty) did the same thing when Charlotte had a big snow earlier this year.

See how these Black "Leaders" get in Public Office and don't anything for their Black voters?

OBAMA IS THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF JFK!!!

The death of Ted Kennedy has given birth to brand new lies in DC. Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann visibly fell deeply in homoerotic love with President Barack Obama/GWB 2.0 long ago. As the Antoine & Blaine of TV news, they were the prototypical original Obama Nazis in media. Chris’ adoration continues to shine brightest as he recently dared to officially dub Obama the last Kennedy brother…What?!?

Do not believe the hype! Irrespective of the formal and surreal passing of mythical political torches, Obama is absolutely nothing like John F. Kennedy!!! CIA agents publicly executed John precisely because he refused to be powerless and puppeted like the soulless Obama!!! Obama and his Nazis' claiming to be the new JFK are akin to David Duke claiming to be the new Malcolm X!!!

Undeniably, there is not one iota of valid comparison between Obama and JFK! John was the very last president who was more than a puppet of banking moguls, the Bilderbergs, and the Illuminati. As president, John had far more in common with Bill Clinton than Obama. Bill masterfully walked the line between loathed rebel and beloved insider. Both John and Bill were notorious serial adulterers. Yet, they were both legendarily stellar presidents.

Obama has done nothing to date except follow the very same brutally elitist and genocidal scripts penned by George W. Bush from 2000 though 2008. Obama was only selected to become president because Bush had stolen his maximum terms in that office. Obama is the blackish mask of Bush’s third illegal presidency.

Never poison the heroic memory of John F. Kennedy with the increasingly putrid and fabricated madness of President Barack Obama/GWB 2.0!!!

Do your homework! See beyond the repulsive hoaxes!:

AB,
I'm 65, but the worst days were in the late seventies and early eighties. Then was the second wave of jobs went offshore, then triple the rise in interest and mortgage rates, energy(utilities) and the demise of unions, along with the high unemployment rate among Blacks. Also my taxes went up under the
Reagan tax cuts. Blacks got hit harder, because to take advantage high market interest rates, one had to have money to invest. We also lived in the handmedown homes of white flight, which were like sieves and energy hogs. When we did work, not only were our wages depressed, our expenses were higher, because we were Red Lined from the more efficient homes. There were many foreclosures from VA and FHA mortgages. I saw this by looking at the huge list of HUD and VA repossessed housing. This was not in the media, because it was mostly poor whites and Black folks who suffered. These changes come so quickly, that it was as devastating as now.

I would suspect your parents felt the effects of this bad economic period.

CF, your arguments, and your polemic skills have always been suspect, but with this comment, I see, your well runneth dry.

Drill, baby, drill!

I don't have to "indite" BP, or you, you both stand self-indited.

Here's a solution: Let's build automobiles designed, not to show off to our neighbors, but to actually get more miles to the gallon (Where's all that "cutting-edge technology" we hear so much about?), and conservation.

Better yet, let's restructure our world, where automobiles aren't the centerpiece of transportation, and mass transit takes the lead.

How about expanding telecommuting. Why must thousand of us (office drones) commute 30, 40, 50 miles daily, to expensive-to-maintain office buildings, so that we can do there what we can, many times, do just as efficiently, and effectively at home?

And on "standard of living": I have no problem with rolling back the clock to a time when we used less of the resources we depend upon now to fuel and run our current society--our techno-gadgets, our automobiles, our RV's, our dirt bikes, our big screen T.V's, and all our other techno-wonders that have softened our bodies (society's struggle with obesity), but not our hearts.

How about more family talks, and family walks, and fewer family drives to the local amusement center, where family interaction is kept to a minimum.

How about more neighborhood centers (within walking distance) where people actually gather to advance collectively the welfare of the community, rather than staying home night after night wrapped up in the latest techno-achievement?

People need to get back to the business of people, and not things. I would welcome such a world!

And don't bother to reply. I already know your response. It's always the same. Someone upthread called you an "ideologue." They have you pegged. We all have you pegged.

Your responses are as predictable as sweat on a hot Summer's day, and just as unwelcome.

Even before we ask, you will have answered.

An Alabama teacher has been suspended after a national outcry for using an assassination attempt against President Obama to illustrate a maths problem to his class.

Gregory Harrison, the teacher at Corner High School in Jefferson County, Alabama, was to receive a slap on the wrist in the form of a "long conversation" with the local school authorities, after sparking a Secret Service investigation when he discussed possible angles to use in shooting at the president.

Field, ya'll check out this latest about the spill from today's NY Times (see below) It seems that not only is BP not aware of how much oil is being spilled, they are clutching at straws on how to stop the flow.

This may seem like a dumb question but shouldn't there have been a contingency plan in place. These guys are making $63 million a day and they couldn't put together a team of folks to just work on potential spills/disaster contingency plans.

Notice how the conservative Congressman tries to not so subtly absolve BP of personal responsibility.

"BP and the Coast Guard have said about 210,000 gallons of oil a day is gushing from the well, but professors who have watched the video and others say they believe the amount is much higher.

Steve Wereley, a mechanical engineer at Purdue University in Indiana, told The Associated Press that he is sticking with his estimate that 3.9 million gallons a day is spewing from two leaks.

''I don't see any scenario where (BP's) numbers would be accurate,'' he said at a congressional hearing Wednesday.

His estimate of the amount leaked to date, which he calls conservative and says has a margin of error of plus or minus 20 percent, is 126 million gallons -- or more than 11 times the total leaked from the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989. The official estimate is closer to 6 million gallons.

Another researcher, Timothy Crone of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, said the latest video suggested a leak of at least 840,000 to 4.2 million gallons a day, though poor video quality made it difficult to come up with an accurate figure.

Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass. called on BP to release live video feeds of the the oil so independent scientists can more accurately calculate the flow rate. He questioned why such data isn't readily being made public.

Government agencies have set up a task force to focus on how much oil is spilling, but BP America President Lamar McKay said under questioning at Wednesday's House hearing that officials still don't know which estimates are correct.

''It's theoretically possible,'' that the larger estimates are accurate, he said. ''But I don't think anyone who's been working on this thinks it's that high.''

BP has tried several unsuccessful methods to contain the oil, but earlier this week managed to insert a tube into one of the leaks and says that as of Wednesday it was sucking 126,000 gallons a day to the surface.

Another strategy being considered along with the top kill is the ''junk shot,'' which involves shooting knotted rope, pieces of tires and golf balls into the blowout preventer. Crews hope they will lodge into the nooks and crannies of the device to plug it."

The economic forces in play in the late 1970s are back again. Why? Because we have a president whose role model was Jimmy Carter, who legislated the changes that delivered an up-ended energy market, high interest rates and the export of jobs.

Carter ended Regulation Q, a banking regulation that gave America the start of the Savings & Loan Crisis. Carter also gave us the Community Reinvestment Act, which was the first step toward giving mortgages to people lacking creditworthiness.

If America wakes up, Obama, like Carter, will leave the White House after one term.

mellaneous, you wrote:

Oil is going to run out. It is not a infinite resource of course there is disagreement but there is consensus among geologists that the oil supply will not last forever.

Of course it will run out. The only question is WHEN. The answer is -- nobody knows. Nobody knows because we do not know the pace we will consume it AND we do not know how much oil exists.

The oil reserves of the middle east have not been mapped for decades. No leaders in the middle east want anyone to know how much oil each nation has. Thus, they have kept out Schlumberger, the company that maps oil reserves.

Anyway, over time, it will become harder and harder to find and extract oil. The realities of finding and producing oil will push the price up and improve the attractiveness of alternative energy sources.

Today, the only attractive alternatives to oil are natural gas, coal and nuclear. Solar and wind are 10 times the cost of oil and technically limited in many ways. They will never replace oil.

Meanwhile, without oil, it is impossible to fly planes. Without oil the airline industry is dead.

no_slappz said...

black dispora,

You have full control of your own energy consumption. You can live without a car and many other energy-consuming devices.

Like voting, people decide for themselves how they feel and what they believe. The personal vote on energy is to use more of it.

Meanwhile, even if we all use devices that are more efficient, the population of the world is growing so fast that aggregate energy consumption is racing ahead. Furthermore, prosperity leads to more energy demand.

Hence, we can commit ourselves to poverty and misery by living like muslims and Africans, or we can continue to advance our society.

As you know, the decision has been made.

Obama hasn't been in the office long enough to effect the kind of change you speak of.

Most people don't even realize that the first budget of Obama's went into effect October 1, 2009. They think his budget started when he took office. The bailouts had already been approved and the health care bill will not be actually effective until the next fiscal year Oct 1, 2010. There hasn't been any new financial or environmental regulations as of yet. The continuation of the bailout, expanding health care for children, and some internal changes of policy which are not anything like Carter's presidency, are the only things that I see that has been actually done.

When your job is outsourced, get back to me on what you think the cause.

The world is consuming about 85 million barrels of oil per day.

That number is expected to hit 110 million barrels in a couple of decades. Maybe sooner.

The number of cars in the world today is 750 million. The number is expected to quadruple to 3 billion by the middle of the century.

IN other words, demand for gasoline is heading up.

Meanwhile, the population of Earth is now 6.8 billion, and heading for 9 billion by 2050.

Thus, aggregate energy demand is also going up, way up. Standing in the way of prosperity -- which is the only point to obstructing access to oil -- is a heartless and self-defeating activity.

He is battling housing issues, financial industry regulatory issues and Iran. He already unleased the neutron bomb on healthcare.

The US will suffer from his healthcare folly in ways similar to the suffering Carter unleased when he ended Regulation Q, the banking rule at the heart of the Savings & Loan Crisis.

Meanwhile, Iran is humiliating Obama just as it humiliated Carter. But this time, instead of holding 60 American hostages for 444 days, Iran is creating a new hostage crisis built on its acquisition of a nuclear weapon it intends to fire at Israel.

With this weapon it will hold Obama hostage, cowing him into doing whatever Ahmadinejad demands.

"Obstructing access to oil -- is a heartless and self-defeating activity"?

I've never thought of Mother Nature as "heartless and self-defeating." Finding oil has always been a hit and miss proposition. New technologies have made that task simpler, but it hasn't made the extraction of oil easier.

You seem to suggest that drilling any place any time is our moral duty. That mindset could turn our oceans into one giant oil slick. I jest, of course, but, then, our survival as a species depends on more than just oil.

That dependence may just be the spark that ignites the keg of dynamite we're sitting on, bringing down the fury of nature as a result of increasing the greenhouse effect in our atmosphere.

But we can't allow a little global warming to stand in the way. Besides, Rush Limbaugh says it's only a myth (at least the attendant causes of it). And we all know Rush is never wrong, but is the Big Truther.

By the way: How do you define "prosperity"? Let's say you're right about the demand: Shouldn't we, as thinking, rational beings, be putting our collective intellects together to seek solutions to the world's energy addiction?

Don't just point your finger at the problem, and shrug, seemingly taking a fatalistic approach (Where's the oil? We need more oil!), and not call for exploring other (more viable) means of providing this "prosperity" that you suggest is overwhelming our thinking, and commonsense, as we vie for more of that black gold.

black diaspora,

In most ways Mother Nature is indifferent, except for the drive to create new life. But inasmuch as life forms have come and gone since the formation of the planet, it is clear Mother Nature has no special love for any individual life form. The experiment rolls on.

As for oil, we should drill for it wherever it happens to be. Especially when the oil is under US territory.

As for a definition of prosperity -- America is prosperous. African nations are poor. You get the difference.

In any case, energy consumption is a key measure of prosperity. When energy is abundant and cheap, prosperity arrives. Energy use is a sign the economy is chugging along. In African nations, very little energy is used, thus it is no surprise the African economies are mainly subsistence economies.

Meanwhile, there are no substitutes for oil. Aircraft will not fly without it, ships depend on it and there is no chance electric cars will take over the roads.

As I've said, Nigeria should be the Norway of Africa. Instead, it is a corrupt mess where half the population is waiting for indoor plumbing and electricity.

no_slappz said...

the fire next time, you wrote:

As unoriginal and boring as 2+2=4 may be, it is a fact. Just like the facts that Obama is mimicking Jimmy Carter in a dozen ways.

A short while ago he gave a televised address. Among many absurdities he uttered was one in which he said stupidity, gullibility and bad judgment were about to be legislated out of existence. He said the government was going to protect customers of financial institutions from financial folly.

He also said the government would never again bail out a troubled corporation. Instead, it would simply step in and wind-down the operations.

News flash, "winding-down" is another word for bailout, only better. It means the government will handle all the messy stuff, like guaranteeing pensions, retirement funding, medical coverage and it means every troubled company now has the government for a partner when the end is near.

Thus, company managements now know the best game in town is to bet the ranch on growth. If the plan works, great. If not, the government will pick up the pieces.

That aside, a little while ago Iran said if it were attacked by Israel, it would destroy Israel within a week. The fact that Iran willingly makes such an extreme statement means that Ahmadinejad knows he's got Obama's number.

Carter lost his presidency because he wimped out when Iran challenged him. Obama is doing the same. But this time, Iran is risking an Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities, which, if it happens, will provoke a response from Iran. At that point, Israel will counterstrike.

If Iran chooses to attempt a nuclear attack on Israel, then Egypt, Pakistan, China and India might jump in.

All because Obama is too wimpy to order Iran to end its nuclear program. He's a one-term president.

Carter lost his presidency because he broke the cardinal rule of American politics:

Never make the American public feel like shit.

Malaise, telling the American public that they would have to practice austerity for the foreseeable future, things like that. Americans generally don’t like bleak pictures. They like happy ones. They like being the ones on top.

Reagan came in and pumped 500 liters of sunshine and good feelings up the ass of the American public. I don’t remember Reagan doing anything about Iran – but he did benefit from the hostages being released shortly after he was elected.

In the meantime, America suffered higher deficits, a ruinous anti-drug policy and tax cuts that ended up only benefitting the wealthy.

Meanwhile, you’re worried about what Obama should do about Iran. In my opinion, he doesn’t have to do anything. Iran lacks the long range capabilities that would directly threaten the U.S. And the Dinner Jacket Man knows that Israel will disregard U.S. sensibilities if it even suspects it’s being threatened by Iranian nukes. So what good is it going to do the U.S. to launch a campaign against Iran when our military resources are stretched to the hilt between Iraq, Afghanistan and our other obligations around the globe? It’s gonna take putting the U.S. in even deeper economic shit just to fund a campaign against Iran. Or do you really expect a replay of the WWII effort as an economic engine for the U.S.? Those days are over.

Come to think of it, what you’re really worried about is America losing its status as the World’s Policeman. Haven’t we had enough of that shit?

Hilarity @ Limbaugh's broke-fingered comments. I see Uncle Rush still hasn't learned from the time he stuck his foot into his mouth concerning Donovan McNabb.

I really hadn't taken the proper time to read upon the oil spill - the thought alone leave me with a uneasy feeling in my stomach.*turns away from picture*

The Gulf of Mexico and everything within its waters are catching hell right about now.

Not to wish ill on anybody but just when you lose all sense of humanity, life has a way a slapping you across the face to help you become human again.

I wonder how many of those crying about what the Obama administration ISN'T DOING to help with the spill were against the government getting involved in their affairs before the spill (health care, bail outs, et).
