How low can they go?

Any Negro in A-merry-ca caught reading the news paper in that picture should be taken away by the "Drop Squad", forthwith. In fact, any A-merry-can caught paying for that waste of ink to do anything other than to clean up a spill or put it at the bottom of their bird cage ought to have their heads examined.

The Post showed poor taste and pissed me off with their dead monkey cartoon, but just when you think that they couldn't go any lower, they do.

Criticizing the Governor of New York for not being able to do his job because he is blind, is despicable behavior, even for a rag belonging to that poor excuse for a human being, Rupert Murdoch. Hey look, I don't live in New York, and I really don't know what kind of job the guy is doing. From all accounts he ain't doing so great. But I got a news flash for the folks over at the post: there are a lot of political leaders with 20/20 vision who are doing a pretty good job of fucking up our country. Singling out someone for criticism because of their disability is beyond the pale. Even for the Post.

I saw where Saturday Night Live did a parody of him, and I honestly was not as offended as much as some people were by that. I know that it was in poor taste, but it didn't send up my pissed off meter as maybe it should have. This, on the other hand, did.

Today Albany teeters on bankruptcy,.....Paterson's blindness severely constricts his ability to acquire basic information. His administration is adrift; he is inconsistent, imprecise and often contradictory in his public statements. To put it bluntly, the governor needs competent help.”

No, "to put it bluntly", you folks over at the Post are a bunch of morons!

So if he could read braile, would they be happy? That was the dilly with me--his adjustment to his blindness was unconventional to say the least. He should just ask them--if I could read braile, would it make a difference? Their self serving answer would be yes. The gravamen of this whole this is that they will be attacking and insane no matter what. Indeed, the derangement on the right might even get to Murdoch himself. As I stated on my blog and others, his young wife has been reviled by wingnuts for edging Sir Rupert toward more progressive feelings. For you and I that'd still be fascist, but it's a start. He even has a soft spot for Obama. That drives his underlings NUTS. I'm not making excuses for the asshole, but I am sure he's the one who told Col Allan to do something concilliatory, no matter how fake.

Now, switching gears, it's time we stop giving them excuses and easy shots. Gov. Patterson's gotta stop being so loopy, black folk around the country have got to refrain from acting like niggas (shooting each other, slinging drugs, fucking without regard to disease or pregnancy, starting fights during basketball games in Alabama), Burris has got to go, poor Sheila the Mayor has got to go (and places like Baltimore and Detroit need black nerd mayors like Corey Booker and Adrian Fenty), Dirty South hip hop needs to go low key and obtain some on bama class (though it's an oxymoron), Chris Brown and R Kelly need to go yo jail...and on and on...

Field,

I lived in New York City for nine years in the 1960s. I don't know who owned the New York Post in those days, but it wasn't much better than it is now. We subscribed to the New York Times, but picked up the NY Post only for sensationalism.

Gossip? They had it. Somebody cheating on his wife? That was there, too. Out of wedlock teenager? Yep. Digging up dirt on politicians? Sure.

I really can't remember exactly what side of the political fence they were on, but the paper was known as a "yellow rag" then. Maybe today you could compare it to a "yellow rag dipped in kerosene"... with their inflammatory headlines and supposedly-funny (NOT) cartoons.

What is the circulation of the NY Post? Is it down in this economy? They have to do something to boost circulation. Lots of newspapers are feeling the heat, whether they are right- or left-wing.

Maybe the day will come when we will get all of our news from the Internet. It has been predicted for years, of course. At least here we have the ability to choose what kinds of news we want.

Field & other friends, don't let the NY Post bastards get you down.

Peace, love and happiness,

I don't think anyone who has traced the Governor the last few months disagrees that a few editorial whacks are in order...

For his job performance.

But that isn't what the morooons at the Post went after.

This, from Singer John Legend to the Post:

John Legend to NY Post: Shame on You for Cartoon

The New York Post ran an editorial cartoon on Wednesday comparing the author of the federal stimulus bill to a crazed chimpanzee shot by police earlier in the week after attacking a woman in Connecticut.

Musician John Legend responded to the cartoon with the following open letter to the Post:

Dear Editor:

I'm trying to understand what possible motivation you may have had for publishing that vile cartoon depicting the shooting of the chimpanzee that went crazy. I guess you thought it would be funny to suggest that whomever was responsible for writing the Economic Recovery legislation must have the intelligence and judgment of a deranged, violent chimpanzee, and should be shot to protect the larger community. Really?

Did it occur to you that this suggestion would imply a connection between President Barack Obama and the deranged chimpanzee? Did it occur to you that our president has been receiving death threats since early in his candidacy? Did it occur to you that blacks have historically been compared to various apes as a way of racist insult and mockery? Did you intend to invoke these painful themes when you printed the cartoon?

If that's not what you intended, then it was stupid and willfully ignorant of you not to connect these easily connectable dots. If it is what you intended, then you obviously wanted to be grossly provocative, racist and offensive to the sensibilities of most reasonable Americans. Either way, you should not have printed this cartoon, and the fact that you did is truly reprehensible. I can't imagine what possible justification you have for this. I've read your lame statement in response to the outrage you provoked. Shame on you for dodging the real issue and then using the letter as an opportunity to attack the Rev. Sharpton. This is not about Sharpton. It's about the cartoon being blatantly racist and offensive.

I believe in freedom of speech, and you have every right to print what you want. But freedom of speech still comes with responsibilities and consequences. You are responsible for printing this cartoon, and I hope you experience some real consequences for it. I'm personally boycotting your paper and won't do any interviews with any of your reporters, and I encourage all of my colleagues in the entertainment business to do so as well. I implore your advertisers to seriously reconsider their business relationships with you as well.

You should print an apology in your paper acknowledging that this cartoon was ignorant, offensive and racist and should not have been printed.

I'm well aware of our country's history of racism and violence, but I truly believe we are better than this filth. As we attempt to rise above our difficult past and look toward a better future, we don't need the New York Post to resurrect the images of Jim Crow to deride the new administration and put black folks in our place. Please feel free to criticize and honestly evaluate our new president, but do so without the incendiary images and rhetoric.

Sincerely,

John Legend

Field gird your loins it's going to be a bumpy ride if this is going to ignite your ire. Murdoch owns WSJ, Fox, Myspace and a lot of other media outlets. He's worth $8B+. Will people stop financing his companies? Doubt it! If he cut a check to Sharpton and the NAACP you know they'd take it. I'm not sure why anyone is surprised by this. Black people need to have some consequences at the ready instead of complaining and then going home. Why hasn't anyone stepped up to the plate to start a network? This is where the effort needs to be focused.

How does Patterson get information? Do people read him things?

Jody said...

I agree with Ellen. I think the sinking sales of papers is going to spur papers like the Post to put provacative, outrageous things in the rags to generate sales and remain "relevant." Relevant meaning solvent. And sadly, this tactic works. People continue to buy it. We have for so long been running a race to the bottom of decency in this country..... we need a concerted effort of promoting civility and decency that springs from the ideals of compassion, dignity, kindness, and respect.

Trash TV, trash mags and newspapers, trash music... it is all a part of our culture... It's going to take the work of all of us to change that. Til then, this kind of garbage will continue to sell.

Re Patterson. IMO he's done a decent job here. It wasn't him that torpedoed Wall Street which has a big effect on the city and state economy. A lot of the layoffs that BOA and Citi did are going to be tax paying citizens of the New York State. BTW he's legal blind, meaning he can't drive, but as I understand he can read with device assistance.

Actually, Field, that was my comment. It was so late at night that I didn't want to go through the trouble of signing into my Google account, so I just went anonymous instead.

I really don't know much about Patterson. New York is 3,000 miles away, and at the state level it's not something I do a lot of thinking of. My question is serious, and literal, and not intended as anything other than asking for information.

I'm genuinely curious about how the guy's blindness impacts him at a practical level. What did The Post say about it? Believe it or not, the whole country doesn't necessarily zero in on every wrinkle in the East, even if the media seems to want us to.

field negro said...

Duchess..., you are right, I am a couple of weeks behind on my count. I calculated that I am about 6 murders off. I am not sure about the 33 figure, though. (I will update my version today)

Grinder, I provided a link to that Post article. I can't see how his blindness impacts his work as Gov. I really can't.I mean he is all over the braile thing, and he is a pretty smart guy from what I hear. If someone has to describe how good [or bad] a special project or something looks, I am sure there are quite a few people around him who could do that.

Paterson's problem (if it is a problem) is that, like other New York politicians, he enjoys the attention of New York media. His handling of the senate appointment showed he was either getting bad advice from his media advisors or (more likely) wasn't taking their advice. He's a decent guy who needs to say "no comment" more often.

grinder said...

Thanks for updating the link. It really doesn't get me what I'm looking for, but Field, you're not required to do my research for me. So I'll say this much: I don't trust the New York Post any farther than I can throw their building, but a stopped clock is right twice a day so in theory this could be one of those times. I really don't know.

From a distance, Patterson's handling of Clinton's replacement really looked pretty bad, and in general he doesn't come across as a very forceful or formidable guy. But I don't have a clue whether this has anything to do with his visual problems.

I know nothing about his biography. He had been the lieutenant governor, which can be a holding pen for people of vastly differing capabilities. Think of the vice-presidency of the United States. We've had Dan Quayle and Spiro Agnew, and we've had Harry Truman and Al Gore.

Maybe Patterson's a clunker, legally blind or otherwise. I don't know. Why did he get the lt. gov. job to begin with, and what did he do before that? Is there reason to think that the guy has more ability than he appears to have shown so far?

Cry me an f-ing river. Have you ever seen The Final Call (Farrakhan's paper) or Sharpton's Amsterdam News? I once saw an ad in there for a book called "Jews and their Ways".
The only American to participate in Iran's Holocaust Cartoon confrance was an African American professor. Any protest from ANY anti-racist group? Nope. When the president of Iran, who had put on this conference spoke at Columbia U how many black folks protested? None.
There are hundreds of incidents where African Americans in the media have said things ever bit as demeaning to gays, women, jews, asians... and nothing. We truely have Jim Crow laws in this country when it comes to free speech. Jerimiah Wright has no problems with Farrakhan loving Hitler. Well I got no problem with him being called a the dreded n-word and dangled from a tree.
I'm sick of hearing about people like him and Johnny Legand mmoaning about their hurt feelings. Ya know it kinda hurts people's feelings when you make fun of genoicide, it kinda hurts the feelings of gays when ya call them faggot, it hurts the feelings of asians when you justify hate crimes you're kkkomunity committed against them. I see no bleeding hearts amoung African American activists bout that.

LACoincidental said...

I live in New York, so I can surmise two things. First, Gov. Paterson isn't really an upfront guy. He's obviously smart and talented, but it takes a certain type of cool to keep Albany in check. And the Senate seat thing was just a fiasco -- nominating a Kennedy for publicity then caving in to the rednecks north of Orange County by nominating a wannabe Republican? Not a a 'G' move.

The other problem is that state budget lives and dies on Wall Street. The second the housing bubble burst, the state was already predicting massive drops in revenue. And much like the 'O' man, Paterson had to make steep cuts to health care and raise takes because the previously mentioned upstate Rednecks wouldn't play ball if it meant cutting funding for state prisons or cutting back on upstate aid. (Locking up black folks from the City is big money for the Poughkepsie/Rochester/Buffalo region).

To basically, Paterson is getting lambasted by the New York Post for cowtowing to the very ignorant neo-Cons that still read the New York Post for anything other than celebrity gossip and sports.

NOONE who talks about black folks like Farrakhan and co speak about jews can get within 300 feet of a college campus.... yet historic black colleges and black student unions get a free pass and few will say "no" to an offer from Farrakhan to speak.
