This is not funny.

"Late comings with the late comin' stretcher That's a body bag in disguise y'all betcha I call 'em body snatchers quick they come to fetch ya? With an autopsy ambulance just to dissect ya They are the kings 'cause they swing amputation Lose your arms, your legs to them it's compilation I can prove it to you watch the rotation It all adds up to a funky situation So get up get, get get down 911 is a joke in yo town" ~Public Enemy~

I swear sisters can't get any love. Poor Kourtney Wilson. Remind me never to call 911 in the Chi. Hey, I know they have had some serious murders this year, and everyone in that town must be on edge, but damn it, trained professionals should act like trained professionals.

"Imagine calling 911 for medical assistance and winding up in jail. That's what happened to a South Side grad student who says, instead of providing treatment, paramedics had her arrested. CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports. Kourtney Wilson, 23, was charged with assaulting three paramedics.

But Kourtney says that's impossible because she was in the midst of a seizure. And she says, what she deserved was treatment, not a trip to jail. "I've had many seizures and been in the hands of many paramedics, and I've never had such an awful experience," Kourtney said. Kourtney has a history of lupus, and around 12:30 Monday afternoon, she had a seizure at her Woodlawn home. "She just started shaking, violently shaking and her teeth were clattering," said Tiffini Williams, Wilson's roommate.

That's when Tiffini called 911and paramedics responded. "I just remember being strapped down, feeling like I was in a straitjacket, and I just kept taking off the strap, like 'please no, please no', not really understanding everything that was going on," Kourtney said. But Tiffini repeatedly confronted the paramedics about what she saw as heavy-handed tactics, telling them, "'I called you all to help her but you're being too rough with her. It's almost like you're assaulting her.' As soon as I said that, one of the EMT guys pointed to Kourtney and says, 'you're going to jail.'" Kourtney says she was dragged down the stairs of her house in handcuffs to a waiting police car.

She was taken first to Grand Crossing District on 71st, then to South Shore Hospital, then to the Pullman District on 111th Street, and finally, to Roseland Hospital. There, she finally got treatment. "They drug tested me and then they provided me with an IV of seizure medication.

By then, it was about 10:00 at night," Kourtney said. In other words, she received treatment about nine hours after her arrest. And her release papers confirm her diagnosis as "seizure disorder."'

Well Kourtney, maybe the next time you should wear your "seizure disorder" bracelet.

Thanks for this story Jessica. And we are still looking for Mitrice Richardson.

Exactly. And the Chi gets more bad press. The illusion of this "post-racial" America we're supposed to be living in continues to be ground into fine dust.

And for this reason, I'd love to deal with my own people instead, but it seems we act worse towards each other than we do towards other people.

We Black women really need something like the Jewish Anti-Defamation League. Our public image is totally screwed up.

We cannot continue to let others define who we are and what our public image is otherwise people will continue to treat us the way these paramedics treated Kourtney or the way the police in Malibu treated Mitrice Richardson.

Truer words, LI, Truer words. I work in healthcare and I see it. Young black male comes in with a GSW then he was automatically up to no good. IMO when a patient walks through that door it the circumstances that brought him there are only relevant if it affects his/her course of care. It isn't just patients. Ask a black med student, resident or attending physician if there isn't subtle or even overt discrimination.

I've heard stories of patients asking doctors to clean up their rooms; with all politeness of course! I've heard of patients refusing a doctor's care because they forgot to sign up for MJ skin-bleaching treatments while at med school.

I remember witnessing a nurse that I work closely with physically push a black medical student out of the way because he had the audacity to be standing where she needed to go. He did not see her and was simply trying to observe a procedure. I've seen her interacts with many different races. She has never treated any of the PCAs (orderlies for some), who are predominantly black, like she treated that med student. Perhaps because they new their station in life and did not get the uppity notion to go and educated themselves in medicine!

Stories like that remind me you never take anyone for granted regardless of their job title. There are PCAs out that have better bedside manners than MDs and I've witnessed it.

It is lack of opportunity and guidance that keeps POCs for having a more representative number in the medical community.

This story is disgusting and while I do think we as a people are entirely too litigious I think a gross injustice was done to Kourtney regardless of the EMTs racial makeup. She deserves to address her grievances in the courts.

Sadly, I think the wrong message will be learned by Chicago first responders. They will probably be less likely to come to the aid of someone in physical distress because of the unethical actions of some of their colleagues.

I am a somewhat past-the-sell-by date white male who has a seizure disorder and I di wear a medic alert bracelet.

The bracelet doesn't always get looked at, and has been disregarded by both helpful by-standers and "professional responders".

I have had seizures in public, not been arrested, but it's come close a time or two. Once I asked "why" and was, not unkindly, told that "disorderly conduct is disorderly conduct" and it was up to the cops to do the arresting and judges and justices to make further decisions.

The I rish have a saying: "There is no situation so bad that it canoot be worsened by the presence of a police officer".

LisaMJ said...

I hope she sues the pants off the city and gets those paramedics fired. They have absolutely NO BUSINESS having that job if they can't treat patients properly and can't tell a seizure when they see one. This sort of reminds me of a case a few years ago where a family called 911 b/c a family member had passed out or something while in the car while the doors were locked, the cops came and the girl woke up shortly after they arrived and rather than try to open the door, or wait to see what happened after the girl came to, she went to reach for her phone or something, they thought she had a a gun and they shot and killed her right in front of her family. Of course no gun was found. Man, it can be so dangerous to be a black person and calling the authorities. I remember a cop moving into my building and thinking oh boy, and my white friend and neighbor said she felt "safer". I felt more nervous. Seriously, something wrong in this country with our law enforcement.

Xi said...

Something's missing in the story. Notwithstanding the sister's seizure disorder diagnosis, the complainant's history of events does not follow that diagnosis in this instance. Specifically, a grand mal seizure, as described herein above, has, as one of it's elements, amnesia for the event and a degree of retrograde, or pre ictal as well as post ictal amnesia.
In other words even though this lady has a seizure disorder, every violent physical outburst is not a seizure.
Imagine if every diabetic who got popped for a DWI argued they were having a hypoglycemic attack.
Victims need to get the facts straight before throwing the victim card.

Javier,
A Black MD buddy once told me the other side of your story.
While in his Internal Medicine residency program a very disproportionate number of black patients refused to see him for their medical care and instead requested to be attended to by white physicians. When one of his white co-resident buddies asked a black patient why he they had transferred care from Dr. "Black" to Dr. "White" the response was chilling, to wit: "No offense to Dr."Black" but when it comes to my health I don't want an affirmative action brother taking care of me." To which Dr."White" asked the black patient "So how do you know Dr. "Black" is an affirmative action Doc?" and the patient simply responded "C'mon Doc."
So it cuts both ways suggesting that promoting merit over political correctness would be curative in this instance.

PPR_Scribe said...

Xi, the Black physicians in my family have the opposite experience with Black patients. They have had Black patients lined up at the door to see them, travel miles out of their way, and even switch insurance plans to be able to see/continue to see them. In several cases my family members, after taking time that no one until then had taken with these patients, uncovered serious conditions that had prior to then gone undiagnosed.

This type of exerience is prevalent among many of our Black physician friends, as well. There may be some Black patients who would prefer not to have a Black physician. But they are far and few between.

I am just relating a personal experience from a very good physician friend. It troubled him greatly and he lived with that pain until his recent death. I did not intend for that to be a blanket appraisal of all American black MD's and their patient panels; but rather a glimpse of another perspective.
Private practice and residency programs have vastly different dynamics as we both know.

Javier said...

Xi,

I don't doubt for one minute that there are individuals that believe that, but that is indicative of their acceptance of their own inferiority.

The majority of black residents have achieved success because they have earned it. Of course there is the minority among residents (of all races) that are book smart but possess no common sense.

I don't really see anyone promoting political correctness.

I find it funny that any time black or Hispanics achieve something it is attributed to affirmative action and it is suggested that the individual is not capable. That is one of the failures of affirmative action but until society stops closing doors, literal and figurative, in POC's faces then I don't see a better solution.

For all I know one or all of those EMT folks might have been black.

Not only that, but the laws of probability dictate that there will be occasional screw ups no matter what. Not that this was "excusable." It wasn't.

But the fact that it happened to a black woman does not automatically make it a racial incident. Seizures are often misinterpreted, even by "trained" personnel, without regard to the race of the person having them.

Xi said...

Javier,
Stereotyping, racial profiling and blind hate based on differing genetics are all predicated on ignorance and insecurity.

The patients that my MD buddy cared for in his residency program were, for the most part, uneducated folks from the hood. Unfortunately, a disproportionate number of these patients when compared to the more educated people he attended to in private practice, were easily mislead to believe the nonsense of the race baiters that my good friend was less than the great doctor he actually was.

The reason the majority of people on this blog blame whitey become they think is because most are in the habit of doing so.

Note that the post didn't say the paramedics were White or Black but the 'tendency' is to assume that they were White because of the abuse, despite the fact that Blacks are just as abusive-if not far more abusive.

It's a habit from the past. But you make a very very important point that most humans don't want to do:

"Look in the mirror at yourself first....KNOW Thyself." Blacks are notorious for NEVER looking at themselves. It's too painful and scary for Blacks to look at themselves. They are afraid of what they might find. That is, they are less than White folks...

That's why Blacks stay on the "it's Whitey's fault merry-go-round."

I don't know any black people who think that they are less than white folks, with the exception of Uncle Toms and Aunt Jennies. Not even the downtrodden black folks think like that. Sounds to me like an opinion straight out of antebellum times that was instilled in your mind from childhood, something you were taught.

Black folks did not fight for Civil Rights because they thought they were less than white folks, it was because they knew they were just as much as and equal to white folks. Nor are they still fighting for the same rights because they think they are less than. It is whites who felt that blacks were less than them, but then, they've always tended to have an attitude that they are better than any other group of people on this earth. That is a world-wide known fact. That is why they tend to want tolabel others so much.

White folks are no better than any of human beings on this earth. They do the same thing that every other human being do and that is eat, have a bowel movement, and die. Therefore, climb down off of your pedestal on cloud fifty nine and get back down to earth with the rest of us earth folks.

I understand that a bracelet or necklace might not have helped, but in any kind of emergency medical situation anything that can advocate for you is a plus.

It appears that the EMTs probably weren't properly trained so they relied on a stereotypical assumption to relived them of the responsibility.

"They drug tested me and then they provided me with an IV of seizure medication."

1. They tested her for drugs and THEN they provided her with an IV of SEIZURE MEDICATION.

2. Her RELEASE PAPERS CONFIRM her DIAGNOSIS as "SEIZURE DISORDER."
Therefore, it is simple as ABC. She had a seizure.

Now do you know how we know that it was a fact that she had a seizure?

Granny "Oh really? Or is this your own personal thought? I willing to bet that this is what you think of black people. I don't know any black people who think that they are less than white folks, with the exception of Uncle Toms and Aunt Jennies."

No, Granny. I DON’T think Black people are less than Whites. But I DO know there are many Blacks who are self-hating, and ‘believe’ that they are less than Whites. One can look at how Blacks treat each other tell that.

I am, however, surprised that after living in America for over 50+years, you don't know any such Blacks. I find that amazing! Either you are in denial or you ‘don't’ want to look for ‘fear’ of what you might see, which was the point of my comment that you attacked.

BTW, you can't change ‘anything’ until you can face it. Considering the ‘state’ of our Black Community today, the most ‘casual observer’ can see that there are quite a few Blacks who have a problem with the way God meant them to be. I think it is time to get that stuck horse out of the mud.

But again, Blacks ARE NOT any less than Whites, but it doesn't matter if many Blacks believe that they ARE less than Whites, does it? Blacks have sought for centuries to receive the approval and acceptance of Whites in order to feel good about themselves. That still goes on today. But maybe none of this applies to the folks in Oakland.

Meanwhile, ‘less’ acceptance of Blacks by Whites is on the rise; ‘increased’ degradation of Blacks by Whites is on the rise; Black- on- Black killings are on the rise. It seems that the ‘lower’ the acceptance and approval of Blacks by Whites, the 'higher' the rate of murders by Blacks on each other. Do you think this is a coincidence? I don’t.

I could be wrong, but I think there might be a correlation between White acceptance and how Blacks perceive and treat themselves, considering we Blacks have been seeking ‘acceptance’ from Whites for generations.

Of course, you are outraged at me for even thinking such a thing! Granny, I know a lot of Blacks who act and feel less than or better than other Blacks, based on skin color and hair. They actually measure their worth by white features and white culture.

There are “many” such black folks, whether you want to admit it or not. IMO, I think they are in the majority: from the very rich to very poor Blacks; from the highly educated to the very illiterate Blacks.

And spare me the ole accusation-“Anon, you are an Uncle Tom and a House Negro”- bit. That's just avoiding the truth, which you seem to be doing.

Where have you been? That is nothing new and has been going on since slavery and up to the present. And who did you say needs their approval and acceptance? LOL! Whites are human beings just like any other human being on this earth. For whites to have that much power over a black person, is because that black person let them! Now that's what I call a slave mentality. Speaking for myself, I don't care what color a person is, I refuse to let them have that much power over me because I don't need another human beings approval! My mind is free, my spirit is free, and I am free!

"And spare me the ole accusation-“Anon, you are an Uncle Tom and a House Negro”- bit. That's just avoiding the truth, which you seem to be doing."

GrannyStandingforTruth said...

It is nothing new under the sun. There are some blacks that will jump on the bandwagon to degrade and work against their own black people to be accepted and approved by white folks and have been doing that before you and I both were born. I am not one of them. And I suspect there will always be some black folks like that until the world ends because they've been taught that from the time they were a child.

The way I look at life and people is that if they knew better they would do better. Life is so funny with its twist and turns until you never know when a person might change their way of thinking only God knows.

One of my cousins was one of the Little Rock Arkansas Nine. Believe it or not, it wasn't only that white mob they had to deal with. There were many of our own black people who were against them and threatening them. In fact, they had just as much trouble with some of our own people as they did with those white folks. There were some of our black people that treated them poorly. It got so bad until they all had to leave Arkansas because their lives were in danger.

Just think, all those nine wanted was the same opportunity to get a good education. Some of the whites even had the nerve to accuse them of wanting to be white and said that was their reason for wanting to attend their lily white school. Those nine parents paid taxes just like those whites did, but whites didn't see it that way.

They would drive by and shoot in their windows, spit on them, sprayed acid in their eyes, kicked them down stairs, tried to lynch them in front of the school, tried to set them on fire, threw food on them, and the list goes on. They were nothing but kids back then and they went through that and more.

Granny,

Believe it or not, it wasn't only that white mob they had to deal with. There were many of our own black people who were against them and threatening them. In fact, they had just as much trouble with some of our own people as they did with those white folks.

In response to your post, right is right and wrong is wrong regardless of skin color. If a brotha is acting a fool, I AM NOT going to defend him just cause I am black. I hope you wouldn't do the same.

Anon said it best, principles before personality...learn it girl.

Granny, Jody and Field:
I would love to have the Three (3) of you on my next jury panel if the plaintiff I represent is a brother or sister because I will have you on board no matter what the facts.
How do you reconcile the following:
1. the patient, pursuant to her own testimony, stated that she remembered specific events that occurred during the alleged seizure activity. This not only is inconsistent with seizure activity it precludes the diagnosis by definition.
2. She was given intravenous seizure Rx hours later at the hospital and diagnosed with a seizure disorder. If she were not actively seizing at the time of Emergency Dept. presentation, PR or PO administration of Valium rather than slow IVP or PO Ativan would have sufficed in less dramatic style and Dilantin started for maintenance pending neurological consultation. Compliance is also obviously an issue with this patient. The hospital was simply CYA on this political hotbed. She obviously wasn't in one continuous seizure throughout the ordeal as no human being could seize that long and survive. Often times the etiology of a particular event is idiopathic at discharge and all pre-existing diagnosis are customarily listed for ICD-9 payment coverage issues inter alia. Therefore a diagnosis of seizure disorder has red hearing elements written all over it. Whether or not the county settles to avoid the publicity is another issue since; as we all know perception trumps reality every time.
However, based on the facts, this is not the slam dunk you want it to be. That's all.
BTW, Mr. Bennett. Esq., I would suggest that if a black brother from Philly was being prosecuted based on the same credibility of evidence you would be livid.

Granny "I don't know who on here called you an Uncle Tom and a House Negro but it wasn't me. Nonetheless, I have to ask you is it really me that is avoiding the truth or is it you? Because you are the one that made this statement:

"It's too painful and scary for Blacks to look at themselves. They are afraid of what they might find. That is, they are less than White folks...""

Granny, I also said this:

"No, Granny. I DON’T think Black people are less than Whites. But I DO know there are many Blacks who are self-hating, and ‘believe’ that they are less than Whites. One can look at how Blacks treat each other tell that."

And this:

"...Considering the ‘state’ of our Black Community today, the most ‘casual observer’ can see that there are quite a few Blacks who have a problem with the way God meant them to be. I think it is time to get that stuck horse out of the mud."

So don't take my comments out of context so that you can be 'right'. I have tried my best to clarify for you in a respectful way the statement you took out of context. However, there is no clarification with you. You are opinionated and bull-headed in your thinking.

Those who think differently you label as wrong and must be humiliated "put down" by Granny.

I have said that I respected you but you make it hard for me to do so when you misrepresent what I say. You aren't interested in the Truth, you are only interested in 'being right'.

It's YOUR personality as Granny on FN Blog above the Principle of Truth. No wonder you have run-ins with truthful people here.

Go ahead, Granny. Be right. But the 'truth' still remains, no matter how much you deny it.

That is the best summation of Granny I have seen. I lost respect for her/him a while back because Granny has to always trump or be right, when sometimes Granny's thinking is illogical and very condoscending which does not help the cause or plight of our people. shame

You a trip! In your rush to attack my character and in spite of what you assume, I am not in a whose right contest competing with you. You have an opinion and I have one. However, since my opinion doesn't quite line up with yours, you insinuated that I have no principles and because my opinion is different from yours this makes me a lie, and in denial. Let me explain something to you. Whether you like me or not is irrelevant to me because I could care less. My life is not wrapped up in this blog and I do have a life outside of this blog with many friends and family. Therefore, that is no skin off my back. Nevertheless, the fact still, remains the same. You have your opinion and I have mine.

What I was trying to express to you is that black people are sometimes their own worst enemy because they tend to jump on the bandwagon of piling negative opinions on their own people strenghtening stereotypes that whites have labeled them with. They will even go against their own and mimic whites in their actions against their own as did a lot of those blacks against the Little Rock Ark Nine. I believe in unity. United we stand, divided we fall.

I am well aware of the problems in our community, I see them every day that I wake up. It is not like I am pleased with it or trying to cover it up. Far from that! However, shining the spotlight on it and complaining about it is not gonna solve the problem, only rolling up your sleeves and going out in the trenches, organizing, trying to enlighten, working with our youth to help transform our community is going to solve it.

When I shared the story of what happened during the integration of Central High it was to show how some our own people were instrumental in working against something that would benefit them as well, which goes on right to this day. Black folks hold their own people back. That's why black folks can't get nothing done, because they are too busy helping whites put their own down and complaining instead of getting out in the trenches working to make a difference. We could talk about the problems in our community until the moon turns blue but that is not solving a darn thing. It is only helping to make the situation worser than what it is. The media shines the spotlight on it enough and some black folks just don't get it because they turn around and help them shine the spotlight. In fact, they even go so far as to point where to shine the spotlight at. You don't see them shining the spotlight on the problems in their community and trust me, maybe I shouldn't have said trust me, since you seem to think I'm dishonest, but anyway, they have the same problems. They just don't shine a spotlight on them. When a fella can get you to concentrate on your problems all the time, his stay hidden.

My main concern is not about what white people think of me, or if they approve of me,or accept me as a black person. I really don't care about that one way or the other. That is irrelevant! My main concern is that our people wake up and realize that they are free, stop putting down each other, stop helping whites to put blacks down, work together to better our community, and be united. There is power in unity.

That young lady was automatically stereotyped as a drug addict. Why because that is one of the jackets they've attached to black people. As if whites or others don't do drugs. Oh, I have experienced firsthand some of the automatic assumptions medical professionals make due to stereotype labels because I am black. And I am a senior citizen. Those stereotypes apply to us too.

BTW, let me make this perfectly clear to you before I end what I'm saying.
I AM EXPRESSING MY OPINION!

@Granny,
Here's your first comment to me:

"Oh really? Or is this your own personal thought? I willing to bet that this is what you think of black people. I don't know any black people who think that they are less than white folks, with the exception of Uncle Toms and Aunt Jennies. Not even the downtrodden black folks think like that. Sounds to me like an opinion straight out of antebellum times that was instilled in your mind from childhood, something you were taught."

That might have been YOUR opinion, but it was disrespectful, insulting, and uncalled for, considering I did not personally attack you.

You concluded your final comments with:

"I AM EXPRESSING MY OPINION!"

Granny, everybody has an opinion. However, "how" it is expressed says a lot about a person.

Your opinion did not speak highly of the 'principled' Granny I once knew who lived by the Christian 'Golden Rule'.

I don't know, maybe a combination of Fox News, Republicans, rightwing nuts, Democrats and increased racism have gotten to you. But maybe you have always been that way, I was just too blind to see.

I KNOW my opinion means nothing to you. You have made that very clear. Besides, most opinions only add to the cluttered wilderness of opinions anyway.

But some elderly wise folks are very skillful at using opinions for 'constructive' and 'mature' unifying dialogue with their people--instead of 'destructive' dialogue.

You are 'not' one of those wise elderly people. You sound like an emotional contentious kid that still has yet to grow up. Blacks will never unify talking to each other the way YOU and I have.

It's disappointing because I once held you in high regard, but I was wrong...

what is the purpose of black blogs?
I thought it was to share stories that MSM don't post.
but I am misinformed, black blogs are for generalizations, racists (who lack the skill of reading COMPREHENSION) to share their evil thoughts and self hating negroes. I will just stop reading the comment sections.I will just pray that one day all the demons (racists) and self hating generalizers are left on this hell for eternity.

why share such negative comments? self hate, demonic, our world is seemingly getting more evil by the day, child molesters, family murders usually by the fathers and loss of compassion for the fellow man, even priests are calling for murder

I'm sick of it all racist cowards , self hating black ppl, and general ignorant fools that cannot comprehend the meaning of words (articles)

where are the positive ppl? somehow I thought WE ARE ALL on the Earth together, but that just my silly notion

"According to the media we are all loud mouthed, wisecracking, welfare mothers/ video hoes.

We Black women really need something like the Jewish Anti-Defamation League. Our public image is totally screwed up.

We cannot continue to let others define who we are and what our public image is otherwise people will continue to treat us the way these paramedics treated Kourtney or the way the police in Malibu treated Mitrice Richardson."

AMEN! THIS is why it is imperative to carry yourself well and refuse to stand silent in the perpetuation of nonsense. it doesn't matter WHO is perpetuating it!

which means at times we will need to address other bw, bm as well as all the other nations that buy into the garbage and try to mistreat us accordingly.

Who says FN's rep is waning, YOU? I swear, you folks complain and complain, then you try to degrade Field. Imo, you folks fit the definition of real TROLLS. You are a bunch of never-satisfied unappreciative jerks who want to control Field's blog.

BTW, no one is forcing you to stay on Field's blog, so leave if you can't stand it.

But save your weak pop psychology for someone else.
