Mrs. Field and I were at a very high end store in the King Of Prussia Mall once, and the clerk in the store (one of my cousins) told us a very interesting story: Seems that some folks would come in and use their welfare debit cards to buy certain items. (handbags) And before you say; "field, either you or the clerk is lying, they can only buy food with those cards." Think again. At first that's what I thought as well, but here in Pistolvania, that is not necessarily the case.
Now I mention that story because of what has apparently been happening out in Cali. Seems that folks out there have been using their welfare debit cards to gamble. Yep, gamble. Now I am not like one of those evil conservatives who do not believe that folks deserve a helping hand. I do. And when folks hit hard times the government should be there to give them a helping hand. Just like it does when certain big banks and corporations need bailouts. But gambling? Oh lawd help us!
And speaking of help: folks, what kind of sick individual does this? (h/t Gwell) Hey, I am just putting it out there, because I honestly cannot comment on it tonight.
Finally, I do want to comment on the little dust up between Aaron McGruder and Tyler Perry. First, a disclaimer: I met McGruder, and I liked him. And, I am a fan of his work. I never met Perry, and although I don't have a problem with him like some folks, I am no big fan of his work.
Having said that; I am not sure if it was cool for McGruder to diss Perry the way that he did. (Although I am not sure if the motives that some folks are ascribing to the diss is true.) There are plenty of folks that he could be dissing besides his partner in corporate crime. And, as for Perry; he needs to lighten up (no pun intended) just a little. When you are large like that people are going to take shots at you, it comes with the turf. And when you think it's getting too hard for you to deal with, just start counting your money; I promise you that you will feel a little better when you are through. (h/t Jason)
I know I said finally up above, but I have one more thing to say: Once again a famous person has been exposed for using a word in private that they would never dare say in public or around decent company. I have to see the episode, I lost track of the Boondocks TV because the air date keep changing. I like Aaron McGruder's satire, and his use of the word nigger is fine within the context of the show. I do not use myself until in it is a discussion forum such as this There is also the matter of free speech. I think saying or writing "N" word gives it too much credence. I am not for banning anyone for using the word including banning books because some people are uncomfortable. Best way to deal with something is to confront and fact it. It is reason why McGruder uses the word nigger in his comic strip and show, the word is used everyday and it is going to disappear because many African American use it frequently.
I think McGruder has a right parody Tyler Perry on his because he does with everyone else including famous rapper and other entertainers. I think Tyler Perry is modern day minstrel and his movies are not thought-provoking because there was not a lot of thought put into his films in the first place. Spike Lee made better films because you did walk with something to think about. The reality is many black people will not see such films like Bamboozled or Get on the Bus because there are issues within the films we do not like to deal with. However, people will pay money to see Madea in a car chase with the police. Tyler Perry will continue to make those films as long as people will run to the movies to them. I went to see Just Wright, but I am telling not a lot of us did not support that film because it only grossed $21,241,068. I am afraid of what Perry is going to do with the upcoming film out of his studio "For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf". Although, Whoopi Goldberg did sign on to act in the film, but wished he gotten the playwright to write the screenplay and Casi Lemons (Eve's Bayou Director) to direct the film instead of Tyler doing. It is my hope he does not butcher that play was it is a great play, but I still cringe. We the public have to support better films and producers will produce excellent films.

This episode had me on floor laughing, McGruder pulls no punches.

I took the infamous Boondocks episode to be more of a commentary on the absurdity of the Black Conservative Christian Community spending good money on Perry's Madea movies, (a man acting in drag) while voting down gay rights. Hence the song "It's ok to cross dress..."
I guess Perry could be upset because it "points out" his cross dressing, something typically associated with the gay community, to his conservative base and also hints it the possible true nature of his sexual identity.

IF ONLY the establishment did the same regarding the ignorance of "Hip Hop Voice Of The Street Pirates".
3) The Season Premier which had the "Dick-riding Obama" video was the tops. McGruder - a LEFTY - sees through the empty "self-chumming" that was orchestrated by operatives within the Black community and called it out. He pointed to the LYNCH MOB mentalist cast against anyone who failed to worship everything about Obama and the crazy expectations they had.
After that episode McGruder has been hit or miss. McGruder should stay focused on the hard hitting social commentary. The "fear of being anally raped" bit is getting a bit worn out.
4) Tyler Perry is now a FAR MORE PROFICIENT PRODUCER than is that hater SPIKE LEE. While I agree with the senselessness of the Madea character her has a franchise of other shows and movies in which "she" does not appear in. (The "Married" series of movies, for example).
Despite it all - the seats are always full as there is a gap between what the community "hates on" but what they prove they want to see per the DOLLARS SPENT.
4b) "Ahkelah And The Bee" and "Pride" (movie about swim team in Philly) were critically acclaimed movies putting Blacks in a good light but failed to gain blockbuster status BECAUSE they didn't tap into that which proves appealing to the audience (which Perry is delivering upon) but many are ashamed to admit (otherwise known as the "Chicken Bone Circuit" / "Chitterlings Circuit" )

I saw the Tyler Perry episode and it had me dying laughing like all the Boondocks episodes this season. I mean the Rocky Horror Picture Show dance number still has me rolling anytime I think about it. The thing is that it's it's true.
So let me get this straight: a grown man puts on women's clothing to present a powerful, Christian message which always seem to be that a black woman should get the great man she deserves. 1) It appeared that you were seeking to make an indictment against "Christian CONSERVATIVES" - that magical force that apparently has so much power that people like UptownSteve and BETUncut talk more about them than they do the Black folks with real and enumerated power within our community per their popular standing.
MORE IMPORTANTLY:
2) When I see someone self-identify with a group yet FALL SHORT of some standard - instead of using this individual's failure as a means of a global indictment of the group - I look at the GROUP and scrutinize the group's effort to MANAGE the individual and the group back toward its PRINCIPLES.

I just saw the Pause episode and it is funny. McGruder nailed the psuedo-christianity theme very well. There is an air of superficality to Perry's movies, and it is always the same them and it does and will not unless the consumer demand something more. His films does lack depth and I certainly do not run to theater to pay a dime. McGruder's episode is more about Perry being gay, but creating an movie empire selling poorly made films which by the way is always has the same theme just some of the actors replaced. Perry is laughing all the way to bank once again we as black people allow him to sell us crap because he is one of us, unbelievable.
Aaron McGruder has been on a tear lately, that's for sure. I did feel like the Tyler Perry parody was a bit over the top and meaner than his usual parodies (except maybe the BET parody). Tyler Perry gets crap for his work, but did Soul Plane get the same flack? What about BAPS? That being said, The Kickball episode and "Smoking With Cigarettes" were great!
Season 2, Episode 1 completely rips Soul Plane and most Ice Cube movies -- which is funny because John Witherspoon (Grandpa Freeman) was a co-star in almost all of them.
I do love the first episode though -- I think McGruder's point was that too many Black folks were jumping on the Obama bandwagon had no clue about politics. They were just happy to see a Black man make it. That's great, but to his point -- the Presidency is deeper and substantial than one day.
As for Tyler Perry's hissy fit -- dude, you're no different than a bunch of Muslim converts going after the South Park creators. Its a cartoon, a parody so get over yourself Negro. But let's keep it real folks, there's deeper Black & Christian theater out there that simply won't see the time of day because self-promoting coons like Tyler Perry. How many Black folks have every read of seen performed James Baldwin's "Amen Corner"? Hell, Jesus Christ superstar has more depth than a Tyler Perry play.
Now, I think that the Black intelligensia has become too self absorbed and haughty to reach common Black folks through art -- which gave Tyler Perry an opening. But that's another post.

Third is the audience itself. Sure my mother and my girlfriend like Tyler Perry, but my mother also reads the new york times and my lady enjoys the newspaper and the opera. The problem is that too many Black folks (mostly women, in the case of TP plays) expose themselves to intellectual cotton candy only. Now, this is where we advocate for Black folks educating themselves -- but this tier won't change until we deal with tiers one and two -- which would be Du Bois' "Talented Tenth".
And as for Spike making so-called "White" films -- good for him!! No one looks shocked that Spielberg made "The Color Purple" or "Amistad". Spike Lee isn't just a 'black director' -- he's one of the most talented film makers of his generation.

I think there a few themes are in the Pause episode along with cross-dressing theme. One is pseudo-Christianity or the very least the superficiality of it. The second point is the occult-like theme that some people in the black community will spend money to see Perry's films, the third point is the treatment of actors who cannot find work and how Perry pays them very little money. There is another point that some people do know what Perry is doing, but are willing to condone it because they consider him to have influence to make films for blacks that appear somewhat positive, in other words they suspend rationale for the larger goal of a successful black person in Hollywood. McGruder does an excellent job with bringing out social commentary. As for some people who seem to be offended because he uses nigger a lot in his show. Take a closer look on the people in the show who uses the word as there are a few characters who do not say nigger, one is the protagonist, Huey the socially - conscious 10 year-old, Jasmine and her parents. He is making the point that those who do use the world are ignorant and have no awareness of how they are. McGruder does not hold back any punches and he does make you think.

HP - I concur, McGruder goes on multiple level in his satire. People primarily noticed the 'Tyler Perry is gay' meme because its the easiest to pick up.
I am a cashier in a supermarket. I have some information about the "welfare cards" you mentioned. They are called "Electronic Benefit Transfer" (EBT) cards. The state uses the same card for two different programs. (1) food benefits (what used to be called Food Stamps) and (2) cash benefits. Two different funding sources, two different sets of rules.
Food benefits are strictly limited to actual grocery food products. No soap, paper products, energy drinks, or hot prepared food.
Cash benefits are the same as an old fashioned welfare check. You can spend cash benefits on anything you want. A person might get cash benefits from TANF. My state also puts child support payments that the state collects on the card. Similar cards are also used for unemployment benefits.
People feel like they have the right to tell folks who get benefits what they can or cannot spend them on. For example, I personally hate to see customers buy soda (Mountain Dew, usually) and candy, and I would rather they were forbidden from this but allowed to buy toothpaste and vitamins.

This monetary benefit that these individuals are receiving are SOCIALIZED. These are private funds that were collected by the government as taxes and then redistributed to these individuals based on their needs.
IF you see people seeking to tell the banks who received money from the government why is it any surprise that the individual who receives money from the same trough to be subjected to the public whim?
I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY YOU ALL CAN'T SEE THAT "MULTIPLE TAXPAYER PAID HEALTH CARE" is going to trigger the same "Your body is owned by the state" consciousness.

Once again you are inferiorizing the poor. THEY got the cash in hand and chose to spend it on the lottery tickets. AT LEAST the same state that gave them the money in the first place is receiving it back and "regifting" it for other purposes - usually education or services for the elderly.

True. And in all fairness, some people who pay those taxes feel they too have the right to spend their hard earned money on what they want to spend it on.
