A diss, the "N" word, and folks behaving badly.


Mrs. Field and I were at a very high end store in the King Of Prussia Mall once, and the clerk in the store (one of my cousins) told us a very interesting story: Seems that some folks would come in and use their welfare debit cards to buy certain items. (handbags) And before you say; "field, either you or the clerk is lying, they can only buy food with those cards." Think again. At first that's what I thought as well, but here in Pistolvania, that is not necessarily the case.

Now I mention that story because of what has apparently been happening out in Cali. Seems that folks out there have been using their welfare debit cards to gamble. Yep, gamble. Now I am not like one of those evil conservatives who do not believe that folks deserve a helping hand. I do. And when folks hit hard times the government should be there to give them a helping hand. Just like it does when certain big banks and corporations need bailouts. But gambling? Oh lawd help us!

And speaking of help: folks, what kind of sick individual does this? (h/t Gwell) Hey, I am just putting it out there, because I honestly cannot comment on it tonight.

Finally, I do want to comment on the little dust up between Aaron McGruder and Tyler Perry. First, a disclaimer: I met McGruder, and I liked him. And, I am a fan of his work. I never met Perry, and although I don't have a problem with him like some folks, I am no big fan of his work.

Having said that; I am not sure if it was cool for McGruder to diss Perry the way that he did. (Although I am not sure if the motives that some folks are ascribing to the diss is true.) There are plenty of folks that he could be dissing besides his partner in corporate crime. And, as for Perry; he needs to lighten up (no pun intended) just a little. When you are large like that people are going to take shots at you, it comes with the turf. And when you think it's getting too hard for you to deal with, just start counting your money; I promise you that you will feel a little better when you are through. (h/t Jason)

I know I said finally up above, but I have one more thing to say: Once again a famous person has been exposed for using a word in private that they would never dare say in public or around decent company. (Unless, of course, they were posting on this blog) That's alright, Mel. So you used the N word. Hey, you didn't use it around a black person, so at least you know the rules.

I saw the Boondocks episode. I'm not a fan of the TV Boondocks (not a fan of the N word) but that was hilarious! And so on point. Tyler Perry is nothing but a modern day minstrel and he needs to be called out as much as possible.

And is anyone surprised the Mel Gibson uses the N word?

I have to see the episode, I lost track of the Boondocks TV because the air date keep changing. I like Aaron McGruder's satire, and his use of the word nigger is fine within the context of the show. I do not use myself until in it is a discussion forum such as this There is also the matter of free speech. I think saying or writing "N" word gives it too much credence. I am not for banning anyone for using the word including banning books because some people are uncomfortable. Best way to deal with something is to confront and fact it. It is reason why McGruder uses the word nigger in his comic strip and show, the word is used everyday and it is going to disappear because many African American use it frequently.

I think McGruder has a right parody Tyler Perry on his because he does with everyone else including famous rapper and other entertainers. I think Tyler Perry is modern day minstrel and his movies are not thought-provoking because there was not a lot of thought put into his films in the first place. Spike Lee made better films because you did walk with something to think about. The reality is many black people will not see such films like Bamboozled or Get on the Bus because there are issues within the films we do not like to deal with. However, people will pay money to see Madea in a car chase with the police. Tyler Perry will continue to make those films as long as people will run to the movies to them. I went to see Just Wright, but I am telling not a lot of us did not support that film because it only grossed $21,241,068. I am afraid of what Perry is going to do with the upcoming film out of his studio "For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf". Although, Whoopi Goldberg did sign on to act in the film, but wished he gotten the playwright to write the screenplay and Casi Lemons (Eve's Bayou Director) to direct the film instead of Tyler doing. It is my hope he does not butcher that play was it is a great play, but I still cringe. We the public have to support better films and producers will produce excellent films.

I kind of have mix feelings about Tyler, at times I think he also tries to give back a little bit of positivity, even after he does his damage.

As for those demented waste of humanity raping that poor 10 year old girl (I wish their mothers had terminated them from day one), I am going to hold off on my ranting for now. I need to get some pleasant sleep tonight.

This episode had me on floor laughing, McGruder pulls no punches.

The fact that Perry's in a huff shows just how immature and suspect he is. Come on, McGruder & Co. has dissed gangster rappers (especially 50 Cents) and BET. The man pulls no punches. He's like Bill Maher, Dennis Miller (Back in the day when he was funny and not a Rush wannabe), PJ O'Rourke and David Chappelle -- he's an intelligent, hip, social satirist who doesn't really care what sacred cow he destroys.

Basically black people are being held hostage by Tyler, they won't greenlight a "real" black movie.Tyler's movies are basically a Gospel play, nothing more. It's not like it's "School Days" or "Do The Right Thing".

I took the infamous Boondocks episode to be more of a commentary on the absurdity of the Black Conservative Christian Community spending good money on Perry's Madea movies, (a man acting in drag) while voting down gay rights. Hence the song "It's ok to cross dress..."

I guess Perry could be upset because it "points out" his cross dressing, something typically associated with the gay community, to his conservative base and also hints it the possible true nature of his sexual identity.

..but hey, in traditional Japanese theater, European opera in previous centuries, and Shakespeare the women's roles were filled by men.

Again, I personally have no issue with anyone's sexuality. I know that gay folks can be Christians. Some people find this thought to be scandalous.

As for Mel, McGruder and everyone else this applies to....

Not a fan of any "artist," "elder" or "community member," especially a member of the conscious community, that uses the N word. You can put a "a" on the end to replace the "er." The word is the same. Like jail and gaol. Color and Colour. I have no respect or love for anyone who chooses to be willfully ignorant of that word's history and meaning. Don't give me that garbage about "we're taking our word back" or "sanitizing the meaning." Excuse my language, but BULLSHIT. You loathe yourself and believe the lies of inherent inferiority and ugliness. You mistreat yourself, your family, your friends, other members of your race, and especially your ancestors whose identity was erased by savages who did not care if your forebears were Muslim, Christian, Jewish, pagan, atheist, educated, city dweller, farmer, Ibo, Yoruba etc., They chained them together, stripped of identity, clothes and culture them, and perverted the Spanish or Latin word for Black. That was the label! That's the only way those intellectually lazy heathens bothered to label our brothers and sisters.

Every ugly stereotype ...cowardly....lazy...stupid...ignorant...whorish...immoral....cheat...thief...lascivious...is attached to that beloved "N" word too many of you use easier than the words please and thank you. Shame.

It does seem like Perry "pimps" his Christian Conservative audience to make money just like Donnie McGurkin. That being said, it is kind of cold for McGruder to "out" him like that. Openly people have been questioning Perry's sexual identity.When he plays a male role in a movie , it's not as credible as when he plays Medea.

Aaron McGruder has been on a tear lately, that's for sure. I did feel like the Tyler Perry parody was a bit over the top and meaner than his usual parodies (except maybe the BET parody). Tyler Perry gets crap for his work, but did Soul Plane get the same flack? What about BAPS? That being said, The Kickball episode and "Smoking With Cigarettes" were great!

That being said, it is kind of cold for McGruder to "out" him like that.

Some important notes:

1) Every time the word "Nigga" is said on "The Boondocks" some SOUTH KOREAN cartoon animator had to sync the character's lips with Regina King's vocalization of this word that is so offensive to Blacks.....depending on WHO says it.

2) The paper yesterday told of Tyler Perry's efforts to get Turner Broadcasting to "make things right with him". Turner produces Perry's shows and it owns "The Cartoon Network" where "The Boondocks" runs. It goes to show you that IF AN "OFFENDED PARTY" is truly OFFENDED - they can go to the company that "green lighted" the project and have something done. IF ONLY the establishment did the same regarding the ignorance of "Hip Hop Voice Of The Street Pirates".

3) The Season Premier which had the "Dick-riding Obama" video was the tops. McGruder - a LEFTY - sees through the empty "self-chumming" that was orchestrated by operatives within the Black community and called it out. He pointed to the LYNCH MOB mentalist cast against anyone who failed to worship everything about Obama and the crazy expectations they had.
After that episode McGruder has been hit or miss. McGruder should stay focused on the hard hitting social commentary. The "fear of being anally raped" bit is getting a bit worn out.

4) Tyler Perry is now a FAR MORE PROFICIENT PRODUCER than is that hater SPIKE LEE. While I agree with the senselessness of the Madea character her has a franchise of other shows and movies in which "she" does not appear in. (The "Married" series of movies, for example).
Despite it all - the seats are always full as there is a gap between what the community "hates on" but what they prove they want to see per the DOLLARS SPENT.

4b) "Ahkelah And The Bee" and "Pride" (movie about swim team in Philly) were critically acclaimed movies putting Blacks in a good light but failed to gain blockbuster status BECAUSE they didn't tap into that which proves appealing to the audience (which Perry is delivering upon) but many are ashamed to admit (otherwise known as the "Chicken Bone Circuit" / "Chitterlings Circuit" )

as a film buff and screen writer ( aspiring of sorts), I have to take issue with your view of Spike Lee.

Do the right thing...bamboozled... if you mean hater of white people...I'd disagree. Malcolm X had to be taken in context and DTRT and Bamboozled was a very ugly portrait of the some (many) of community's mentality. People won't come to appreciate him until he is gone.

4b) I saw one of those. No doubt that I rather take the kids to see those rather than Soul Plane. But they'll see none of these films until they are older with discernment skills. Look deeper. There are hidden negative, permissive social messages for black kids in these seemingly "positive" films i.e. no clear winner in ATB, share with the son a racist to make a better day. Wait...you can get your's another day.

"Oh sure, you're crazy. There no hidden social messages." Disagree if you wish. Movies and tv influence us even if we don't know it.

Show some respect for the chitterling circuit. They were there when folks could sit where they want in a theater or had no admittance at all....let alone place FOR US.

After attending the Million Man March I got involved with the Alliance of Concerned Black Men in the DC area and did counselling and referrals for former offenders and drug addicts.

You would not believe how many of these admitted rapists, assaulters, and attempted murderers would reference their belief in God and how God "works through them."

One dude told me that "Even if I say FUCK YOU, that's God talking."

i have never seen a Tyler Perry media product. you probably think i'm a freak, but it's true. i don't watch TV or go to most corporate american movies. i think i know who he is, and have seen a few ads for his shows when i'm at a friend's house and the TV is on.

but television is, very simply, mind control and propaganda. you probably think it's about ad revenue, but it's not even about that anymore. /insert long political and economic explanation here/ television is, today, about putting ideas in your head and getting you to agree with the opinions and behaviors your masters want you to have. any person, black or otherwise, who appears on television is chosen. for the express purpose of controlling the minds of one or another social group. perry speaks to black religious women over 25? well, guess what? who are the most regular voters in black america.

exactly. so whatever Perry is telling those women, you can bet that some white rich man wants them to think it. perry knows this and doesn't care, also.

i see educated successful black people in lovely homes

i see black love

music is my escape from the world

Aaron McGruder definitely drew blood when he called out Tyler Perry. As much as Perry has been called out over the last couple years it's a wonder that it took The Boondocks episode to stir the coals.

Good point @ Tyler Perry should count his money and perhaps feel much better. That always helps.


I really didn't get upset with Mel Gibson using the N-word. Why? I hear it every day from people the same skin color as I.

I saw the Tyler Perry episode and it had me dying laughing like all the Boondocks episodes this season. I mean the Rocky Horror Picture Show dance number still has me rolling anytime I think about it. The thing is that it's it's true.

So let me get this straight: a grown man puts on women's clothing to present a powerful, Christian message which always seem to be that a black woman should get the great man she deserves. I give Perry credit because at the end of the day, he knows how to talk to his audience and his shows are entertaining, but I leave it there instead of taking an ultimate truth from it. If he's mad, he needs to just get over himself.

Please allow me to articulate 2 points of clarification.


1) It appeared that you were seeking to make an indictment against "Christian CONSERVATIVES" - that magical force that apparently has so much power that people like UptownSteve and BETUncut talk more about them than they do the Black folks with real and enumerated power within our community per their popular standing.

MORE IMPORTANTLY:

2) When I see someone self-identify with a group yet FALL SHORT of some standard - instead of using this individual's failure as a means of a global indictment of the group - I look at the GROUP and scrutinize the group's effort to MANAGE the individual and the group back toward its PRINCIPLES.

It is MANAGEMENT/GOVERNANCE that is our problem in this society. NO HUMAN BEING IS PERFECT. (Run some naked booty by a male on the sly and there is a good chance that he is going to 'bite'. :-) )

At the same time it is up to the GROUP to uphold its integrity by managing all who claim to be apart of it back toward a certain standard. The CREDIBILITY of the organization rests on these processes - NOT the number of "hypocrites" that have sinned.

In turn some groups of people pride themselves in having FEW STANDARDS that they hold those who identify under their banner to. Instead they are free to go out and "Hypocrite Chase", carrying out their main sport of Indictment Rendering.

The state of "freedom from rules" is ANARCHY - not FREEDOM.

Ironically some of these "Black Conservative Christian" churches that people like to point out as hypocrites are compromised BECAUSE they have one foot IN on their doctrine and the other foot OUT because they have responded to political correctness.

I just saw the Pause episode and it is funny. McGruder nailed the psuedo-christianity theme very well. There is an air of superficality to Perry's movies, and it is always the same them and it does and will not unless the consumer demand something more. His films does lack depth and I certainly do not run to theater to pay a dime. McGruder's episode is more about Perry being gay, but creating an movie empire selling poorly made films which by the way is always has the same theme just some of the actors replaced. Perry is laughing all the way to bank once again we as black people allow him to sell us crap because he is one of us, unbelievable.

Aaron McGruder has been on a tear lately, that's for sure. I did feel like the Tyler Perry parody was a bit over the top and meaner than his usual parodies (except maybe the BET parody). Tyler Perry gets crap for his work, but did Soul Plane get the same flack? What about BAPS? That being said, The Kickball episode and "Smoking With Cigarettes" were great!

Season 2, Episode 1 completely rips Soul Plane and most Ice Cube movies -- which is funny because John Witherspoon (Grandpa Freeman) was a co-star in almost all of them.

I do love the first episode though -- I think McGruder's point was that too many Black folks were jumping on the Obama bandwagon had no clue about politics. They were just happy to see a Black man make it. That's great, but to his point -- the Presidency is deeper and substantial than one day.

As for Tyler Perry's hissy fit -- dude, you're no different than a bunch of Muslim converts going after the South Park creators. Its a cartoon, a parody so get over yourself Negro. Does he not expect for someone to blatantly call out the "How you doin' " moments when he built his fortune dressing in women's clothing?

McGruder called 50 Cents a faux-thug closeted queen -- TWICE!!! He's lampooned many of the hip-hop stars who regularly guest star on his show.

I'm happy TP is making his dough and my girl and my mother loves his stuff.


But let's keep it real folks, there's deeper Black & Christian theater out there that simply won't see the time of day because self-promoting coons like Tyler Perry. How many Black folks have every read of seen performed James Baldwin's "Amen Corner"? Hell, Jesus Christ superstar has more depth than a Tyler Perry play.

Now, I think that the Black intelligensia has become too self absorbed and haughty to reach common Black folks through art -- which gave Tyler Perry an opening. But that's another post.

(Speaking of that cultural divide, Spike Lee virtually screamed about that divide in "Mo' Better Blues". Probably the most important piece of that film was between Bleek Gilliam (Denzel Washington) and Shadow Henderson(Wesley Snipes) In this case, Spike is Bleek, stubbornly holding on to Black thought and critical analysis of craft and Tyler Perry is Shadow, arguing that adapting to your audience is the only means of not just surviving, but thriving in entertainment.)

AB, Spike never dumbs down his movies for his audience and Black folks still go to see the films.

You don't have to make a self-important, convoluted head trips like Oprah's "Beloved" that only a handful of English Lit and Af Am studies majors will fully understand. (Morrison tends to write really convoluted stuff. Its like reading James Joyce or Faulkner)

But you don't have to build a fortune off modern day minstrel shows with a hokey faux Christian message like Tyler Perry either.

I don't hate TP for being rich; I simply don't like the fact that this outright hack can write pedestrian high school plays and make a fortune but my friends in the industry -- you know, people who studied film and theater, can't make enough to pay rent.

If anything, I'm more ticked off at the legions of Black women who flock to this tripe and push out intelligent artist who something important to say.


Also, my friends in theater hipped me to the fact that the cult-like nature of the Tyler Perry cast is totally on point, as is the fact that his actors get paid peanuts while he stacks cake.

(And btw, I've been to the premiere of 'Why did I get married?" and the God awful sequel -- both women I dated are Tyler Perry fans. Hell, I've sat through a TD Jakes movie because my lady likes that type of stuff. My girl knows I hate Perry's body of work. But then again, she hates horror and sci-fi, so we're even.)

This topic isn't a linear point -- its a deep, multi-layered issue about Blacks, media and change.
For brevity, I'll folks on three points.

Now, the first part of the issue is that too many Black folks in media simply feel that so long as they're making paper -- who cares if they insult and degrade their own people? Bob Johnson is the king of making Black folks look like idiots.

A second level is the so-called 'Black Intelligensia' and Black upper class thinkers who have long ago abandoned our responsibility as public intellectuals. Simply put, every educated Black person (myself included)who bitches about Black children not reading but has never tutored a child is as much a part of the problem as BET. Just as get on folks whine about Obama, the Democrats, Republicans who whatever political caste isn't doing things their way but can't name their local city councilman, let alone vote or participate in real community organizing (and not BS protest marching for one day and nothing the other 364 of the year).

Third is the audience itself. Sure my mother and my girlfriend like Tyler Perry, but my mother also reads the new york times and my lady enjoys the newspaper and the opera. The problem is that too many Black folks (mostly women, in the case of TP plays) expose themselves to intellectual cotton candy only. Now, this is where we advocate for Black folks educating themselves -- but this tier won't change until we deal with tiers one and two -- which would be Du Bois' "Talented Tenth".

And as for Spike making so-called "White" films -- good for him!! No one looks shocked that Spielberg made "The Color Purple" or "Amistad". Spike Lee isn't just a 'black director' -- he's one of the most talented film makers of his generation.

I think there a few themes are in the Pause episode along with cross-dressing theme. One is pseudo-Christianity or the very least the superficiality of it. The second point is the occult-like theme that some people in the black community will spend money to see Perry's films, the third point is the treatment of actors who cannot find work and how Perry pays them very little money. There is another point that some people do know what Perry is doing, but are willing to condone it because they consider him to have influence to make films for blacks that appear somewhat positive, in other words they suspend rationale for the larger goal of a successful black person in Hollywood. McGruder does an excellent job with bringing out social commentary. As for some people who seem to be offended because he uses nigger a lot in his show. Take a closer look on the people in the show who uses the word as there are a few characters who do not say nigger, one is the protagonist, Huey the socially - conscious 10 year-old, Jasmine and her parents. He is making the point that those who do use the world are ignorant and have no awareness of how they are. McGruder does not hold back any punches and he does make you think.

Has anyone seen the Tyler Perry production in which the character Mr Brown totally degrades the beautiful Miss Edna. Every time she walks into the room he starts with ‘how ugly she is‘, calling her names, telling her she looks like an animal, not wanting to be touched by her or he‘ll get the cooties, brushing off her touch. It is juvenile, ignorant attempt at humor and I am sick and tired of it.

Black women have a hard enough time finding any positive images of themselves in the media, and we have Tyler Perry co-signing this nonsense. I‘m disgusted and sickened. It's a non-stop degradation of this women and it goes on and on, every scene, every show. This has to stop.

If the government shouldn't help our people and those who have the means and knowledge shouldn't help our people, should we just let them die like animals in the streets? Wait for the minimal possibility that one of two of these people will see the light and do better for self without any help or external force driving changing? Should we with the means, who have escaped the horrors of poverty and ignorance, leave another generation to languish and grow up to be the 'Street Pirates' you rail on about?

Maybe UTS and Kid are right and you've got some Uncle Ruckus level haterade for Black people. Negro, You....Have.....Issues!

HP - I concur, McGruder goes on multiple level in his satire. People primarily noticed the 'Tyler Perry is gay' meme because its the easiest to pick up.

I am a cashier in a supermarket. I have some information about the "welfare cards" you mentioned. They are called "Electronic Benefit Transfer" (EBT) cards. The state uses the same card for two different programs. (1) food benefits (what used to be called Food Stamps) and (2) cash benefits. Two different funding sources, two different sets of rules.

Food benefits are strictly limited to actual grocery food products. No soap, paper products, energy drinks, or hot prepared food.

Cash benefits are the same as an old fashioned welfare check. You can spend cash benefits on anything you want. A person might get cash benefits from TANF. My state also puts child support payments that the state collects on the card. Similar cards are also used for unemployment benefits.

People feel like they have the right to tell folks who get benefits what they can or cannot spend them on. For example, I personally hate to see customers buy soda (Mountain Dew, usually) and candy, and I would rather they were forbidden from this but allowed to buy toothpaste and vitamins.

I consider state subsidized gambling to be a tax on the hopes of the poor. Your legislators know that too much of the money spent on lottery tickets comes from the desperate hope of the hopeless.

You did not hear me say ANYTHING about your molested view of "Pull Your Self UP".

Instead I argued that more effective HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT strategies are needed. If you recall I have been saying for the longest period of time - the FUNDAMENTAL REQUIREMENT for any movement is that EVERYONE IS CONSIDERED EQUAL!!!!

Telling someone "Pull yourself up by you bootstraps" is like saying "Let them eat cake". I did not say this.

HOWEVER - I am saying that I refuse to allow those who are in NEED of change to GO ALONG FOR THE RIDE rather than them being the most important person in their own SALVATION.

It appears to me that with your "Talented 10th" theory - AS WITH "Holy Roller Christians"....you are not sure about somethings but you DO KNOW that YOU are going to heaven and are a part of this "10th".

LACking - let's put aside YOU for a second - the "Greatest of These".
Instead let's talk about YOUR "The Least Of These". Specifically focusing on otherwise fully formed Black Adults - can you specifically articulate to me why you think that they are DAMAGED GOODS and thus "can't help themselves"?

Do you see that when I call out certain people as "Transacting Black Inferiority" that THIS is what I am talking about?

You are so convinced in their inferiority that you need to WORK ON THEIR BEHALF more than WORKING WITH THEM as they do their part because they have FULL BUY IN.

My issue with you is that YOU can't articulate a strategy when YOU/THEY are the "GOVERNMENT" per your victory at the local level.

When you do slip up and become the "government" in the context that you struggled for and won you merely EXPAND OUTWARD to find the next rung by which you can render and indictment against.

This monetary benefit that these individuals are receiving are SOCIALIZED. These are private funds that were collected by the government as taxes and then redistributed to these individuals based on their needs.

IF you see people seeking to tell the banks who received money from the government why is it any surprise that the individual who receives money from the same trough to be subjected to the public whim?

I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY YOU ALL CAN'T SEE THAT "MULTIPLE TAXPAYER PAID HEALTH CARE" is going to trigger the same "Your body is owned by the state" consciousness.

That Twinkie that Gregory eats and adds to his waist line also increases the risk that the government will have to pay for his care. The regulation of individual behavior will be seen as preemptively "protecting the government's investment"

Once again you are inferiorizing the poor. THEY got the cash in hand and chose to spend it on the lottery tickets. AT LEAST the same state that gave them the money in the first place is receiving it back and "regifting" it for other purposes - usually education or services for the elderly.
