my grandmother is about the color of cafe au lait. she has red hair and green tinted eyes. her grandmother had perfectly straight black "indian" hair and blue eyes, but was very "dark." my grandfather also had the straight hair and light skin, but his lips were wide as was his nose. my sister looks like Beyonce and people tell me i look like other pop stars i don't know. my first cousins are as dark as coffee beans. some of them have really golden streaks in their hair. i went to college with a "white" man with kinkier hair than i have, and darker skin; both his folks were ayran looking folk. i went to grad school with a man i swore was Indian (from India) but he was raised in a southern white family, all of whom but him were blonde/blue eyed. he was as dark haired as they come and could've passed as a native of south asia.
it just really irks me that this is a "story." there is so much variation in the human condition. i easily wear my hair yellow, red or brown, depending on my mood; no one comments one way or the other. "black" is a fucking social construct; it means NOTHING in science. nothing at all. most african americans are at least part "white" and native american, very few of us are "pure" african stock. and what the hell is that, anyway? islamic africa has had more "race mixing" going on for thousands of years than any other continent. freakish looks do happen; i remember this poor kid in my college physics class of asian descent, but he had a "half albino" genetic complement. that is, his skin wasn't bleach white, but his eyes were blue, and his hair was this funky pink color. do you think his mom cheated on his dad too? let's all study some genetics, people. they don't conform to narrow, culturally constructed categories of "race," which isn't really real anyway.
