Seeing red.

Tonight I am not going to blog about the "Health Care Summit", because Stevie Wonder could see that there was not going to be a deal. Just more of the same from the rethugs: Block. Block. Block. I wish the Eagles offensive line could block like these guys. If they could we would have five Super Bowls by now. Today was just more political theater from the clowns in Washington. A chance t0 give their speeches and to show their base that they could stand up to the big bad beige man. (BTW, I loved how his O ness read Mr. Morton and that dude from Virginia, -Eric Cantor- a new one) Nice try O man, I see where you are going politically-you want to show the rest of A-merry-ca that you are willing to compromise- but enough of this already;time to start working on your own damn party to get something (anything) passed. Health care, or the lack of it, is a real problem in this country.

But enough about politricksters in Washington. Tonight a couple of stories have me seeing red. One of them literally, and the other figuratively.

Let me talk about the literal one first: It's Hannah Storm's boots, and how a popular ESPN host has been told to sit down for two weeks without pay for talking about them. This is a touchy subject, because it involves the sexes and how we treat each other in the work place. Tony Kornheiser was forced to apologize for saying the following about his colleague over at ESPN:

"Hannah Storm in a horrifying, horrifying outfit today,” Kornheiser said on his Washington, D.C., radio show last week. “She’s got on red go-go boots and a Catholic school plaid skirt way too short for somebody in her 40s or maybe early 50s by now. She’s got on her typically very, very, very tight shirt. She looks like she has sausage casing wrapping around her upper body. I know she’s very good, and I’m not supposed to be critical of ESPN people, so I won’t. But Hannah Storm, come on now. Stop. What are you doing? She’s what I would call a Holden Caulfield fantasy at this point.”

My first thoughts, when I heard this story, was who gives Tony Kornheiser the right to talk about anybody else's looks? (Have you seen the guy?) But then, I thought, well it's his radio show, and he is paid to be irreverent and brash. Hell ESPN even pays him to be that way, so why suspend the guy for speaking his mind? Besides, as others have said; ESPN has made a living on this kind of talk about other people, so why do this now when one of their own feels the heat?

Anyway, for puroses of discussion; does he have a point? Did Ms. Storm go over the top with her red boots? And if she was a man, would we be having this discussion? Hey, I have seen some serious sartorial faux pas by some of the male hosts over at ESPN and I don't think that any of their female co-hosts would rip them. And, for the record, I think Whitlock's criticism of Storm was over the top, his fat ass shouldn't be talking about someone else's outfit. Period.

"Hurtful and personal comments such as these are not acceptable and have significant consequences," said John Skipper, ESPN's vice president for content. "Tony has been suspended from PTI for two weeks. Hannah is a respected colleague who has been an integral part of the success of our morning SportsCenter."

Kornheiser said he had called Storm to personally apologize for the remarks."If you put a live microphone in front of somebody, eventually that person will say something wrong," Kornheiser said on his show Tuesday. "This was one of the times I said something wrong."

Hopefully this will be the end of Bootgate.

The next story has me figuratively seeing red. And, once again, it involves the now infamous Lower Merion school district.

I thought that busing was a thing of the past here in A-merry-ca? Apparently, thanks to a local federal judge opening up some records, we are learning that it is not. The folks of the Lower Merion school district allegedly bused some African American students to a high school far away from their homes to create a racial balance in their district, and now the families of the children are suing. Apparently there was enough of the them at Lower Merion High (which is close to the only area on the main line with pockets of black folks) and not enough at Harriton High. So, as a result, Lower Merion- allegedly- decided to do a little racial balancing act.

Well, the plaintiffs have won their right to go forward with their trial. And the beautiful system of laws that we have here in A-merry-ca will ultimately determine the outcome of this case.

"Said Douglas Young, spokesman for the school district: "We respect the court’s decision, and remain optimistic that our position will ultimately prevail in this important litigation. ... We have argued and intend to show at trial that no such proof [of racial discrimination] exists or is possible to demonstrate. The district developed its redistricting plan for one purpose: to equalize enrollments at two newly constructed high schools."

We will see Mr. Young; we will see.

Off subject. I like to check out the FN of the day. I wondered who is Vernon Hunter? I quickly learned he was the person killed by the man who flew his plane into the IRS building.
This was the only site I saw giving him recognition. Thank you Vernon Hunter, and thank you Field Negro.

What do you think of the firing of the entire teaching staff @ Central High in Providence, R.I. because the students did not progress this school year? Apparently, a number of the h.s. kids don't read at or close to their level, grade averages are very low, etc. etc. The entire faculty was told, yesterday, they will not be returning this Fall.

I'll say this, I'd like to tap Hannah while she wears those boots. Tony K is f'n crazy and I wonder what his twist looks like. Jealous maybe?

I think ESPN is being stupid... close your eyes and imagine him making fun of some guy about what he is wearing,or what he looks like... and since these guys DO make fun of each other... I have heard the banter about clothes, hair or lack of it, etc.... I find it more offensive that they are making him apologize and suspending him. That means Hannah is not being treated equally, and that sucks, for everyone involved.

Hannah looks hot in those boots, skirt and sweater! The guy making fun on her is blind or maybe he is gay?

LOL!

That is sort of an eyesore RE: wardrobe. I don't think it warranted suspension, unlike other comments from that network...

Seriously Field, the Republicans can't be the problem. The Dems couldn't pass it with a majority because the people don't want it. I understand partisanship but you're not being honest. It's been a rough time for progressives lately but try to be honest with yourself.

Based on what you told me: good riddance.

Not true szpork. The people do want health care reform. Look at the polls again.

I read that ESPN had already told Storm, before this Kornheiser thing, to tone down her on-air attire. If that's true then ESPN is just pandering and are complete hypocrites.

And I agree with Jody.

The A said...

OMG Field, you should hear me regularly screaming about Hannah's outfits!!! Far too often she looks like she got dressed in the dark - in a 13 year old's closet! She was wearing this multi-colored purple top the other night that made me want to cry for her.

Hannah- girlfriend, PLEEZ your last name is Storm not Montana!
When your producers were talking about age-appropriate business attire they said GET some class not GO to class.

I could argue about his methods; however, Tony is a hero in my book. IT NEEDED TO BE SAID!!! If she continueS dressing this way, Josh & Bob Ley should show up in wifebeaters & tight muscle shirts.

If ESPN was class, her wardrobe would be supplied by a Ralph Lauren or at least Brooks Brothers.

I think he was in fact being sexist even though the entire outfit does look conspicuous and tempting. But I think ESPN is going a bit overboard with the suspension in this case, if anything a public apology should be suffice. It's not like he referenced her as a "lice-headed ho", or something else racially distinctive along with blatant misogyny.

I'm curious to see how much buttons and T-shirts are going to be printed on behalf of Kornheiser by all those white females who supported Don Imus.

Oh well...

La♥audiobooks said...

You mean they want the federal funds to keep coming without any issues. If they are so interested in racial balance, why not "bus" or encourage the entire black household/family to move into some homes in the district? Gasp.

Yeah right.

The comment was sexist and stupid. He could've said it was a fashion nightmare and that would've been more appropriate but he went over the line by calling her a ho in all but name, saying she was too old, and with the sausage remark (which I don't get but oh well). There are kinds of ways he could've ribbed the outfit but he didn't rib the outfit so much as he he ribbed the woman -- that's where it goes from being possibly funny to mean.

A funny remark could've been something like "Poor Hannah was robbed last night -- the robbers only left behind her old Catholic School Uniform and a pair of boots from 1970." Instead he attacked the woman in much the same way "nappy headed hos" remark attacked the women of Rutgers -- Imus' remark likely wouldn't have garnered a blink if not for the "nappy headed" part which supercharged the blatant sexism with race.

In all honestly, I'm surprised ESPN has taken action because usually no one gives a damn about sexism. That said, since they're a sports network I suppose they're more sensitive to the charge of sexism than other networks. While Whitlock's article was off in most respects one thing he did point out is that suspension will only help Kornheiser's image and therefore ESPN's programming.

Also, don't networks usually dress their anchors? I thought they usually had a few preselected choices but that they were preselected.

It does sound as if he has some type of grudge against her...like maybe she makes more money than he does...or he tried her and she shot him down...lol...very suspect though.

Peace.

@agape -- Thanks. :D I think you could be right about there being an unknown grudge at play here. The comment was just a little too personal and mean-spirited. He pointed out too many things he thought were wrong with her personally. It seems more like a passive-aggressive attack on her than someone being genuinely good-humored and failing at humor.

It all depends on whose ox is being gored. Most people are not going to (openly) make fun of their boss' outfit, no matter the gender. But (as coworkers) men clown each other ALL the time. Women make fun of other women and men. But if a man makes fun of a woman that's sexist?

I didn't see anything wrong with what Kornheiser said. He's said similar things about dudes and no one got offended. People regularly go off on Craig Sager's or Michael Irvin's outfits.

If a woman is wearing short skirts and red go-go boots to work, she has to expect commentary. If Storm really was offended, I don't see why but an apology was sufficient. Suspension is an over the top response. It's saying that's it okay to make fun of a man, but not a woman. Double standard.

The outfit is fine. Tony should sick Albert Belle on her so she can go away another 10 years.

I am a feminist, an ardent defender of all human rights, and most avidly against all types of male chauvinism. Of which there is plenty.

But one thing I am not and never will be is “politically correct”. I abhor PC ness, I rebel and rail against PC ness. I think it’s a mind controlling game and will fight to the death against it. Will never be PC, Ever!

That being said, let’s note that there are basic biological differences between the male and female of the species. (And thank you Jesus for that :P).

If you’re going to play football with the men, you’d better be able to keep up or be better, ‘cuz whining and asking them to slow down ‘cuz you can’t keep up, is just not gonna cut it. Not ever.

Same with that sports station, as has been noted, the men there rib each other also. Men do that.
This situation, if she uses her head, had/has the potential to be turned into a great daily opportunity for a fun banter and pseudo (or real depending on her) war between Ms. Storm and Mr. Kornheiser, where he could have been teased, shamed, and let’s face it, eventually even destroyed if she chose, and used her head, by Ms. Storm. Another more positive outcome is the bad relations that have been surmised by some to have possibly existed, could have been neutralized, thus turning a touchy situation into a good one, or at least one of respect! That’s how I would have handled it anyway. He started it, so like a fish on her hook, he goes her way or she reel him in, fries him and and eats him! ;).
That’s how men play and that’s how women should counter, and the wonderful bestest part is she coulda done this, (she still can), in front of millions of people! I hope she does, for sure I’ll watch!!! LOL

Field Brother, Tony K was wrong and did deserve to be suspended....why? Because of the "mean spiritiedness that he displayed to a co-worker" and because of the Holden Caulfied reference which takes his jib to a sexual context. He was wrong and unprofessional. Furthermore, if mickey Mouse pulled all of the ESPN crew in a room and read thenm the riot act in light of Steve Phillips, Mike Terrico, and Harold Reynolds (That is a lot of "Boys acting bad" for one shop) and Tony K still took it upon himself to cross the line... then he deserved what his bad combover got!

It's sexist of ESPN to believe that Hannah Storm is such a fragile creature she needs to be protected from snark about her boots. The guys on the sports shows rib each other all the time about their poor choices in clothing, their messed up hair cuts, you name it.

Back when my kids got bused in Los Angeles, the district did it by birthdate -- any kid born in an even numbered month got on the bus, ones born in odd numbered months got to stay in the neighborhood school. It's a totally objective system, and if the district in question used something like that to achieve balanced enrollment numbers, no one could bitch about unfairness or racial bias.

Actually, the word on the street is that this punishment was more about Tony ripping Chris Berman's weight.

Deadspin, who have very reliable sources as to what goes on at ESPN, shed light on this topic here.....

Key quote....

"You're forced to apologize if you make fun of Hannah Storm. You get suspended if you make fun of Chris Berman."

LisaMJ said...

I'm not a sports person and never watch ESPN, but if there is that much concern about who wears what by the hosts and the network (telling her to change her wardrobe etc), why don't they just treat them like actors and get a wardrobe department and dress them in whatever fashion they deem appropriate. That way, they don't have to worry about someone making nasty comments or someone dressing too "provocatively" or not nicely enough. I doubt they let them do their own make-up so maybe they need to start doing their clothes and hair to present a consistent, professional appearance in line with the corporate image they want to project. Either that or just hire a fashion expert who has to approve the outfits of the on-air personalities in advance.

LisaMJ said...

Oh and about that school thing, with the firing of all the teachers, on the one hand it is good to hold them to standards, but it seems like they are throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Was every one of those teachers so horrible and what about institutional knowledge and continuity for the students? Finally, if those kids couldn't read or weren't on grade level with their reading, math, etc and they are in high school, that is not a problem that was created in the high school, that started long before in the lower grades. If the kids come to the school without the requisite skills to do the work on grade level in the first place, how is it the fault of their current teachers? WEre they supposed to magically take an 11th grader reading on a 5th grade level and get him to the correct grade level? I'm not saying the teachers were great or anything but this seems awfully extreme.

Oh and Fine Frog Hair, excellent poem once again (and I really don't like poetry much). I salute you, Sir!

Well, that's it, I hope you liked my song. Have a blessed and victorious day!

You need to stick with what works. Is is possible that Hanna's boots were made from exploited workers in some country that has an abundant "people of color"?

HEY GRANNY!!!! How are you today?
Question - I know that you are a fair judge and all but - could you set up the scene in which YOU would have admitted that the evil, racist GOP scored a TKO against Obama?

I was going to say that this would be proven by him being forced to switch on his "Negro Dialect" and call all of the Republicans in the room RACISTS - but I am not so sure that you would think that this is a bad thing.

I am just curious as to how PARTY MEMBERSHIP is a container for RACISM with White folks. Pretty strange thing.

His loyalties to the school administration, teachers unions and what ever the hell the PARENTS are stuck believing in has him figuring on how he can pin this upon the Republicans in the Pennsylvania State Legislature. They tried to pass a law that gave Philadelphia brand new text books that had all of the "vowels" missing due to a massive misprint from the publisher. Good thin the legislative delegation from Philly and West Chester were there to block those evil Republicans from getting away with it.

Please, save yourself, we don't need help getting saved from the likes of you. I don't know MMM but I adore her realness. She speaks it real.

FURTHERMORE Mafia Maria, your statement about professional dress shows how you have been engrained in Euro-Saxon norms. Appropriate is defined by a majority. And not every minority subscribes to those Euro-normative ideas. So you really show your ignorance and ability to be brainswashed by those who are white.

Ideas like those add further discontent between blacks and whites. And your statement does not advance what this blog offers---freedom from white supremacy and oppression.

Why is it that you stupid bitches ALWAYS accuse someone who not only has a profile/username and also uses their REAL picture, of signing on as anon whenever more than one person digs in dat' ass?

It's obvious that more than one person doesn't like your collective asses and given the fact that this probably mimics your real life to a tee, you all SHOULD be use to it, LOL!!!

That said, you're OK because you're just a very lighskinneded, pun intended, version of us, LOL!!!

I heard about Desiree Rogers after I heard that David Patterson gave a television conference in which he stated he will not run for governor. Also now, the news is also linking Rangel's run-in with the ethics committee. Well its that season again ---and I don't mean wabbit!

Maria, "every time you do it just makes me pray harder that your kids haven't inherited your ignorance, intolerance or bile and that they escape with as little damage as possible."

Just WHO do you pray to, Maria? You have said many times that you are an atheist and you don't believe in God. So WHY are you praying?

YOU ARE A LIAR AND A FRAUD!!

Not for that kind of show. Besides, she looked just fine in those red boots. and that short tight skirt went nicely with those boots. you folks have no taste. besides, the lady definitely has some great legs. just look at those sexy knees.

Hey, if you got em, flaunt em.

Maria, don't let them run you off like they did to grinder. i thought he was strong and could withstand some of the black racists on this blog, but he finally caved in. it was sad, cause he never did or said anything to deserve the treatment from the racist trio on this blog.

maria, you have every right to be on this blog as anyone else. if you don't believe me, just ask Field.

They are picking themselves off, who'd you THINK I was gonna say, da' white man???

Political "street pirates", LOL!!!!

Mass media is simply highlighting what Blacks are already doing to themselves and each other. Keep your $hit right and tight SHOULD have been what any Black political person said to themselves after Obamas election, but instead some thought they were "special", forgot who they were, and are now dealing with the consequences.

If this is off base from the rest of the discussion, I apologize. However, I have an observation I'd like to point out concerning the "Field Negro of the day."

I've noticed that when some white nut does the unthinkable (like that guy that shot at the middle school students the other day), you generally see their picture posted only once (as is the case with that nutjob that flew his plane into the I.R.S. building).

However, when the "underwear bomber" tried his ignorant stunt, his picture was posted in the corner of the television screen during the entire discussion (over and over again). Regardless of what anyone thinks, the bombardment of negative images like these DO affect the subconcious mind (negatively) over time. And as a Black guy, I get tired of being judged (not as a terrorist) for the general opinion some folks have of the Black race, rather than being judged by who I am as an individual.

you're out of your mind.
this post was about an over-the hill white guy with a combover making cracks about a white woman he worked with. as a white woman i am not supposed to comment? there was not a single racial overtone to the entire incident.

this is not a black-only space. when field says don't comment to white folks, i don't. i don't appreciate being called mafia maria or macaroni, and I have never called anyone out and called them a racial or ethnic slur. to do that to me is wrong. grow the fuck up and get some manners.

the level of discourse in your comments is like a playground harir-pulling, spitting-in-the-face fight. there's no intelligence or depth.

this kind of stupid shit isn't tolerated elsewhere--guess that's why you're here. you think this shit would fly at Ta-Nehisi Coates' blog at the atlantic?

Reposting Commenting Rules
FEB 26 2010, 5:12 PM ET

We've been through this before, but it's a good time to go through it again. Here are the basics of commenting here. One thing worth adding is that I need people to understand that this is a moderated space. I know that most blogs do a minimum of moderation. But there's quite a bit here. It's all after the fact and transperant, but this is supposed to be a dinner party. It's not a food fight.

Here are some road rules:

1.) Try to assume the good will, and honest motives, of your fellow commenters. Half of the unnecessary beef I see up here comes from basic misunderstandings. I'm not saying that there aren't really differences. There most certainly are. But the point is to spend our time on those, as opposed to what we "think" someone was trying to imply.

2.) Try not to be unnecessarily antagonistic. This rarely happens here, but I generally find that an extra heap of sarcasm ("Heh. Yeah, that's real intelligent.') or the occasional tweaking ("I'll be commenting on you momma tonight!") or even the threat for bodily harm ("What's that about Michelle Obama? I'LL CUT U!!!") tends to serve as distractions. I mean, it's fun, but probably not good for the neighborhood.

3.) If your comment is "held for moderation," it rarely means that you've said something objectionable. More likely you've managed to trip the spam filter. Send me an e-mail. I'l fish it out as soon as possible.

4.) It's worth remembering that this is a liberal blog, written by a guy whose politics are unfailingly liberal. So if you see me defend Huck or Palin, it's probably not because I'm "going soft" on them, being "too polite," or "a sleeper agent for birthers the nation over." It's most likely just on that one issue.

5.) There are no set of rules for why someone might be deleted or banned. The only big one holds that if you came here, through google's news portal, to tell us why Sarah Palin is our country's foremost intellectual, you will be banned. Beyond that, don't be an ass, and we'll be fine.

6.) White people. Never, ever comment on one of my barbershop threads. We tried this once. Someone ended telling me to go to Hair Cuttery. In Obama's America, I thought you guys might be ready. You're not and hence banished to the bleachers. Just kidding. Sorta. I mean damn, Hair Cuttery??

7.) Claiming that conversate isn't a word, is a bannable offense. Ditto for "irregardless." And "overstand." All words are words. That is all.

Please don't push your need for rules and Reg on FN blog he has made it quite clear there are no rules or censorship. Get your own blog if you want those.

You are not white, you are eye-talian.

Also I too want to know who an atheist prays too. You skipped that one.

FN makes ethnic slurs when he talks about "whitey" please make sure your Italian ass calls him out on those ethnic slurs, cause those are just wrong. Toughen up Macaroni, we are called ethnic slurs every day.

You see no racial undertone because you are engrained in Euro saxon norms. Period. But you are too simple to realize that. Although not white, you have bought into whole mindset.

Pathetic really.

The Good Assnon, "Also I too want to know who an atheist prays too. You skipped that one."

You won't get an answer from Maria. She finds fault with everyone else but cannot own up to her own crap.

I have called marie on her own contradictions several times in previous comments, but she ignores it and proceeds to criticize others.

She projects on others what she carries herself but cannot admit her own faults. That is a childish attitude, which once AGAIN, she projects on to others, telling them they need to "grow up", when it is Maria WHO needs to grow up.

Field,

Ardmore is not the only town on the Main Line with "pockets" of African Americans. 100 years ago someone had to mow the grass on the Main Line Estates. Their descendants remain and have melded into the greater social fabric. I went to a relatively integrated high school in Berwyn and feel much more comfortable in multi-racial situations than many of the people in LA where I currently live in exile.

TNC is a dictator and runs a cult he is a pussie on his blog , to much overkill and moderation..

TNC cannot handle dissent he is quick to "ban" folks..He is a insecure overinflated yoyo that got a job from white folks..

FN's site is superior in so many ways and more importantly FN is mature and has the capacity to handle shot including criticism of his comments and views

FN is 'da man' in my hood!!!!

Maria is an atheist who prays? Wow. She has declared soundly about the 'falsehood of God'. In other words, Maria has rejected God and she has been very adamant about that on this blog.

Either she is a hypocrite or she is worshipping something/someone else. Either way, she is a liar.

How would david duke feel about teachers that were failing to educate black children being fired.

He would be upset.

Government's failure to educate black children benefits david duke and all other racists.

Do you agree with david duke or should the teachers be fired for the benefit of the children?

All those male sports douches dress like fucking clowns, with hideous ties and ridiculous suits that look they are enlarged little lord fauntleroy outfits. And they don't get any shit at all. The reason Storm--who is one of the best talking heads on ESPN--gets shit about her clothes is misogyny plain and simple. The sports boys don't like having to share their playground with icky girls. Remember when Keith Hernandez went fucking batshit in the teevee booth because he saw a woman in the dugout (she was an athletic trainer)? Same shit, different day.

YOU HAVE CLAIMED ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS TO BE AN ATHEIST AND NOT BELIEVE IN GOD.

AND YOU HAVE DENOUNCED THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.

SO WHY DO YOU PRAY? PLEASE ANSWER, SEVERAL PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW.
