Coming from a different place.

Thank you Santa; I loved my gifts. I am glad you got my letter with my requests. I hope you made it back to the North Pole in one piece, because I really want you to do this gift thing again next year.

I hope that all of you reading this enjoyed your Christmas with your families and friends. Any excuse to get together with family and loved ones is always good.

To my people back in Philly, I am sorry to hear that a blizzard is heading your way. I just hope that all the effects of it will be gone by the time I get back.

So anyway, I have been reading a lot of stuff on the Web with my down time, and I came across an interesting article by Kyle -Ann Shiver over at Pajamas Media. Now, you have to understand, that Pajamas Media is a wingnut news website, and you go over there at your own risk. (Severe mental damage could result in too much reading.) But being your humble field Negro servant allows me to brave those wingnut currents so that you don't have to.
"Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour may run for president in 2012. If I were his wife, I would put every ounce of my marital capital on the line in my fight to stop him. Governor Barbour would be, in my opinion, attempting a swim upstream, against ghastly, frigid currents, towards a bridge beyond too far.

The reasons why this is so ought to be obvious to any fifth grader with even an ounce of worldly knowledge and a tiny grain of common sense.

I sincerely doubt that Haley Barbour holds any genuinely racist beliefs. But he has made and continues to make comments – in a most Southern, Southern drawl — that have made even this native Southerner cringe. The most recent remarks by the governor were made in a formal interview with the Weekly Standard, which was published a couple of days ago. Already Governor Barbour’s questionable take on his town’s “Citizens Council” has been pilloried from coast to coast in scores of publications. In addition, past comments have been unearthed, one actually putting the words “watermelon” and “blacks” in the same sentence. Enough said.

Like Governor Barbour, I am as Southern as they come, born and bred in Atlanta a mere two generations removed from a plantation in Mississippi. I’m four years younger than Mr. Barbour, which gives me an even better excuse for being too young to have been a segregationist, much less a slaveholder or plantation mistress. But even I have strong, vivid memories of the Civil Rights movement and of the Jim Crow segregation that spawned it.

Two of the first words I learned to read as a young child were “white” and “colored.” Whether at the public park water fountains or the restrooms of any public facility, those words were emblazoned across the South in bold, stark print. Those words are still painful to me in ways that might be hard to fathom by my generational peers from other regions. And I’m white. As far as I’m concerned, one would need to have the sensibility of an orange or be born after 1970 not to feel a sharp pain in his soul over Jim Crow and the whole host of indignities to real human beings because of it.

Governor Haley Barbour, I’ve read, has been a good public servant in a state that has had grave problems, many of them stemming from Katrina devastation. He is currently the chairman of the Republican Governors Association and a former chairman of the Republican National Committee. He has served ably in both positions and deserves recognition. But a run for president to unseat the first black president? Hailing from Mississippi? With a record for misconstruing the enormous shame on the soul of the old South?

Sorry, he won’t get my primary vote if he decides to run. In fact, I already question his bearings and feel the need to set a few things straight because he has so blatantly muddied the Civil Rights movement waters.

Mr. Barbour was born in 1947, too late to be held accountable for continuing to uphold a post-Civil-War era code of laws. But I’m even younger, was born in 1951, and the Civil Rights era still amounts to far, far, more than “diddly” to me. I clearly remember the tales of my grandmother’s childhood on the family plantation in Mississippi, where black tenant farmers and their children lived lives completely reminiscent of their slave ancestors. I was in at least the third grade before it dawned on me that the War Between the States had happened nearly a century before I was born, and I could finally rest easily knowing that some guy named Sherman wasn’t actually down the road a piece burning everything in sight. Our parents and grandparents spoke of that war as though it were still going on or had happened the day before yesterday.

I played with the children of my grandmother’s “colored” maid ....."

OK, let me stop, I am having some ABM moments, but you can read the rest of "Missy" Anne's article here.

I actually disagree with her political predictions for Haley if he were decide to run, but I see where she is coming from. In fact, I think that we all do. We all live where she is coming from every day.

True dat!Even if it is for drama! :)

Nah, he' wouldn't get far

Happy to hear you got all your gifts Mr.Field. Yup, despite everything, Santa has been good this year!

He won't.

The GOP will see him as a liability. Not as much as Sarah Palin, but one noneoftheless. The GOP's going for someone as moderate in their appearance and views as they come.

"Who cares any more about any of this racial grievance b.s.? I’ve had the compensatory treatment view forced so far down my throat that I now find such a feature *attractive* in a candidate. What’s worse? Injustice committed centuries or decades ago, or injustice that’s being committed right now (whose ultimate goal is to completely destroy our constitutional republic). I wonder how many others feel the way I do?"

Since Whites do in fact have rights that the world is bound to respect (and if it doesn't, to it's own peril), these guys simply won't Get It™. It never clicks in their head about why the racial grievances exist because they simply don't give a damn about those who make them.

The "colored" maid who made any grievances in earshot of her employer would had been fired on the spot. Apparently no one wants to hear about someone "in their place" grumble about how much it sucks to be there in the first place.

And I hope the Northerners turn their nose up at the South's latest attempt in raising its haunches out of the primordial muck.

Hey Mack, I like almost everything you write and agree with 99% but I have to disagree with you on this one. With the election of the first Black prez and the fear of becoming the minority in this country and add in economic uncertainty there is no way the GOP nominates anyone close to the middle. These folks are insane and have a huge chip on their shoulders and are being stoked by Boehner and McConnell. Pretty Mitt may get the nomination but he will have to tack hard right to outcrazy Newt, Haley and the rest of the GOP crowd. You can't out crazy crazy by being sane and the sad part is Mitt seems pretty reasonable.

Comrade Misfit said...

I was reading her piece, but then I got to the second page.

The White Citizens' Councils were, to my recollection, pretty much the Klan with suits. To equate them with ACORN is a gross distortion of the historical record.

PilotX said...

Hey Comrade, I see the same problem with today's conservatives. They have to make equivalences even when non exist. Thus ACORN, the New Black Panthers, ect become the new Klan even though they have virtually no power and exist in their minds to protect the franchise of people of color while white extremist groups seek to deny people of their rights. Look at their arguments about how affirmative action is the same as historic racial oppression. The funniest to me was blaming the DOJ for not going after people for disenfranchising white voters with the same zest they go after people who attempt to disenfranchise voters of color. Sad many don't realize how entrenched and structural racism is in this country so much so that it doesn't take conscious effort.

Look at their arguments about how affirmative action

Do you mean affirmative action the way you got your job?

http://www.adversity.net/united/default.htm

UAL Accidents or Incidents caused by underqualified quota-hire pilots -- So far, we have documented one very serious incident, and we have received several anecdotal reports of other incidents

Reduced UAL Training / Experience Requirements for Pilots -- We are documenting the extent to which United has reduced the training and/or experience required of pilots in order to attract the proper number of preferred minorities.

UAL's Stated "Diversity" Goals -- Documentation of UAL's preference for hiring selected races and ethnicities. To include: UAL written policies; numeric goals for hiring selected colors; public statements about "increasing diversity" and/or "minority representation" and/or "inclusion". These are all code words for affirmative discrimination policies

anon, "Do you mean affirmative action the way you got your job?"

Very good point, anon. I am still not convinced PilotX qualified even with affirmative action. Any pilot is a fool who states both his profession and airline he flies for on the internet. He reminds me of MMM who was always spouting off about being a scientist over and over again. That is a sign they probably are lying or at the very least very insecure.

Most people don't have to mention their job on a blog. What's the point of doing that unless you need to be considered someone whom you are not?

PilotX said...

Well I made up my mind to not respond to our "friend" anon due to its necessary racism but instead of responding to this individual directly I will respond to its post instead. First off United Airlines has always hired low time pilots and successfully I may add due to our safety record. We began hiring low timers in the 60's because of the needed manpower due to acquiring several aircraft. The search for young male pilots was initiated (figures huh?) and ads were created that stated that a candidate didn't even need a commercial pilot's license (United would pick up the tab) and even in the 60's the ad told interested parties that they could retire as millionaires. Funny, thise ads are still in the training center. Bad part about this is that there were approximately 1,000 very qualified Black male pilots (Tuskegee Airmen) that were military trained and perfect for the job buuuuuuuuuut, you know the rest of the story. Anyhoo, humdreds of underqualified white males were hired for the job and thus many are our most senior pilots now. Was there any problem with hiring low timers then? Of course not, when something benefits white males its fine but when the tables are turned to at least attempt to make things fair we get shit like anon posted. Pt. II to follow.

PilotX said...

This website our anon has directed you to is laughable at best. It includes stories that are the aviation indusrty's version of urban legends. "I heard this one (enter either girl or minority here), pilot that didn't even know how to (enter the most ridiculous shit here), while my buddy who was the Space Shuttle commander with ten million flight hours couldn't even get the job because they had to hire a (you know what to enter here). So as is my forte lets do some debunking, especially about my favorite topic.
The B-747-400 is United's largest aircraft and thus is the most senior plane flown by the most experienced crews. So yes there was a chance that the captain was hired years ago with low time but he was certainly a white male as there were no female or "minority" 747 capatins based at SFO at the time this near accident occured. The reason for this near accident was that long haaul pilots get very few takeoffs and landings and fly so rarely that it's difficult to stay proficient, this problem has been corrected as "heavy" crews go in for more sim training as stated in the article but the facts stop there. The female 737 captain story, well both of them, are downright laughable for anyone who knows anything about commercial aviation. The 737 does not have the capability to dump fuel so therefore the female captain in our made up story would not be able to do so in an attempt to balance the fuel. In all fairness the original story was she was a 727 second officer and dumped the fuel but that's laughable too because balancing fuel in either the 737 or 727 is just a matter of turning one switch and turning off two switches that control the fuel boost pumps. The second one about the female captain that got so scared she left the flight deck is even funnier as we all know the 737 requires two crew members to fly by certification and if she had done something like that she would have been fired but alas no United crewmember has ever been fired/disciplined for abandoning their post. And since she would have been flying as a first officer for years prior to becoming a captain she would have flown around many thunderstorms (notice I say around as the AIM articulates how far to avoid storms and as professionals we do so). Nice try though. The rest are not even worth mentioning. So in essence United is one of the safest airlines flying and our hiring minimums far exceed F.A.A. minimums so all of our crewmembers are highly qualified no matter the gender or color. But yeah we do still run into idiots that believe bullshit like this and look at women and people of color and decide we're AA hires or do not deserve to be where we are. Fact is most women and people of color are more experienced that alot of their white male counterparts or equally qualified. Anyhoo thanks for playing debunk the racist idiot today and if anyone has any serious questions about flying feel free to ask the old X man.

For reference the last fatal accident caused by pilot error at United was almost exactly 32 years ago, the DC-8 that ran out of fuel outside of Portland, OR. Compare that safety record to the other airlines and you'll see we do things pretty well.

May the most qualified person for the job be selected. This in turn may cause people to seek out education, stay in school, improve their skills, create an america where we are the cream of the crop globally through skill improvement driven by natural competition and not just someone who has to spend a lot of time looking for ways to disprove some anonymous blog posters statement.

Boss Hogg for president? Sorry Field, I just can't follow you there. The old vote-counter in me says: 171 = the old "solid South" of the confederacy (unlikely to be so solid in '12, (see VA,NC, and FLA in 08) but for argument), Border States(WVA, Ky, MO, OK)= 30 Mormon West(AZ,UT,ID)= 21 for a total of 222. Where's he going to get another 48 electoral votes? The Northeast? Nope! Miswest? Not a chance. Far West? Nada! Mountain West? Well, ok, after deducting blue NM and CO that's 12 more votes for 234, 36 needed. Throw in Kansas (probably his), and even Indiana (probably not) for argument's sake and it's 251/19 and the end of the line for good 'ol Haley's best case scenario and 4 more years of the big-eared guy.

PS: As the son of a white man who did a lot of hiring, and with some hiring experience myself, I'll chime in with the assertion that without some sort of affirmative minority hiring policy, majority workplaces always seem to manage to miss the qualified minority applicants and replicate themselves through references and personal preferences.

Wesley R, I am saddened by that news. :(

PilotX said...

I do dig Air Jamaica but they have scaled back so I had to fly American from Chicago earlier this month.
@whitey, you are correct about majority workplaces. There would have been no need for AA to find QUALIFIED people of color and women if there had not been rampant and outright discrimination in hiring especially in aviation. Funny how those so against hiring QUALIFIED women and people of color have nothing to say about the real discrimination that went on for decade after decade and created an unbalanced workforce. I can't speak for other airlines but I know at United we select only well qualified and outstanding individuals. Hell, we had to have perfect driving records (studies show people with bad driving records have more aircraft accidents, makes sense)and many were unsuccessful due to other small deficiencies. Rest assured when you fly the friendly skies you are in capable hands even if your pilot is a woman and/or of color.
Good point Hathor but I've come to expect that of you.

Field, "And if you don't lose the tude Santa won't bring you "shit" again next year."

Now see... that's being heartless to the homeless and lonely ones. That's what I am talking about.

Anon.1:57PM, I was wondering about my homeless friend. Do they have Internet access in the shelter?

I appreciate the love, but I would prefer if my Anon. friend spent less time in the fields and more time trying to get on the grind and out of the shelter. Just saying.

Sup naomi? Happy NW!!

what the hell do you think i've been trying to do? I am washing windshields in parking lots at malls. fyi, the Whites usually tip me but black folks don't give me shit. Blacks are the worst tippers in the world. they are a bunch of cheapskates.

Well Mack, we need these anon conservatives to remind us that we are on the right track. They show themselves to be ignorant and immature and are ALWAYS wrong. Kinda like the scared straight program, show the teens what it's like in jail and they won't want to go. Trolls show us conservatism and we get to see forst hand how terrible it is to live without thought;-)
@Field, I try to ignore the wingnuts but like Eric Cartmann has to sing "Push the Little Daisies" I can't let incorrect information stand. I'm working on it.
