Dear John: No apology is needed.

Before I post tonight, here is hoping that Slick Willie is OK. My man has had some heart issues and apparently it's acting up again. Love him or hate him, the guy is the consummate politician. I met him once a few years back and he made me feel like I was the only one in the room. I bet if I met him again he would remember my name. That's how good the guy is. So get well soon, Willie.

Now to my post: I honestly wasn't going to blog about John Mayer, in spite of all the people e-mailing me and asking me about my opinion about what he said. I have said this before, and it's worth repeating: I am actually happy when famous people (or anyone else) make their true feelings about race, religion, or whatever, known. Don't hide behind the mask of political correctness. Don't be a hypocrite. We need to know how you feel and that you are out there.

It's why when ignorant ass trolls come to this site and drop the "N" word like it's going out of style I let them. Because as ugly as it might seem to you, it's important that you understand what kind of country you live in, and how your neighbors (famous or not) really feel about you.

So that's where I stand on Mr. Mayer. And I wasn't going to blog about him until I heard the latest:

"The same day he apologized for using the N-word and blabbing about his sexcapades with Jessica Simpson in Playboy, John Mayer broke down on stage.
While performing his tune "Gravity" Wednesday at Nashville's Sommet Center, Mayer, 32, stopped playing and apologized to his bandmates.

"In the quest to be clever," he began, "I completely forgot about the people that I love and that love me.".." [story]

Oh stop it! What is with famous people when they are caught dropping the "N" word or some other insensitive s#*t going on the apology tour? Watch, he is going to call Rev. Inc. next and they will absolve him of his racial sins. Trust me, once Rev. Inc. says that you are not a racist, you can assimilate back into the PC version of A-merry-can society. Now that's a gig I would love to have.

Hey Field Negro, it's me, Don Imus. Look, I think I might have f*&^#d up and called some black females some not too PC things. Anyway, can you help me? Sure Don, but depending on what you said this one is going to cost you. I called them "nappy headed hoes" on the air. Oh oh, Don, you better get your check book out....I know Don Imus, I know what's in his heart, he is not a racist. Thank you Field, your check is in the mail. What a country. But I digress.

So all of a sudden Mayer sees the folly of his ways, and poof, just like that, he is not a racist anymore.

Give me a break! The guy is disgusting on a couple of levels. And being a racist is just one of them. Fist, he kisses and tells,which makes him a zero in my book. And second, he is an opportunistic liar. All bad things. Mayer later says, in his public mea culpa, that he is going to "get it together". Translated: I am going to try to keep my big mouth shut about my true feelings in the future.

And that's where I stand on Mr. Mayer. Hopefully I won't have to blog about him ever again.

My standards are not low, yours are. I've said nothing of my attitude to indicate it needs to "change." You need to stand on your own. YOU are responsible for yourself.
>>>>>>>>

It's a shame you've taken the meaning of "stand on your own" to mean "stand alone", which I'm certain men read from you from 10 miles away. Of course Strong Black Man (SBM) wants a woman that can stand alone, but what he does NOT want is a woman reminding him at every opportunity that she can!!!

For now, we'll have to agree to disagree. Meanwhile, I have to cook breakfast for my family before going into to the lab to make up for last weeks weather, which BTW is how a Strong Black Woman rolls, LOL!!!

@l,

Please do noy put your words and inferences into my comments

"Thrasher, how does being born on "US soil" gives you the authority to decide on the 'acceptance' of the n-word for other black people who are just as subjected to it's racist implications?

BTW your observation about professional Black americans behavior toward whites in the island is not mine in fact just the opposite..

In my interactions over he decades with Black folks in the south and the island I find them in part less aggressive and more bending than Black in the north because the behavior of whites was more more lethal and depraved..Black in the south dealt with lynching, cross burnings, white masters raping woman and incest ect..White folks created fear in Black folks in the island despite the majority of Black slaves often small numbers of whites brought fear and power and controlled negroes more so than in the industrial north..

No I thank my inferences about the differences between Blacks in the north and Blacks not born in the USA and in the south is spot on..

I have to co-sign with this statement which is one of the many reasons I left the deep South as soon as I could!!!!

@L,

Please do not put your words in to my comments.."Thrasher, how does being born on "US soil" gives you the authority to decide on the 'acceptance' of the n-word for other black people who are just as subjected to it's racist implications" I never made that inference..

BTW your observation about professional Black americans behaviors in the island is the opposite of my experiences..

From my observations over decades Blacks in the south and the islands are much more passive and bending than negroes from northern venues in part becuase the savage nature of white sumpremacy many southern Blacks and island blacks more fearful of whites and as such they are not a raw with whites as northern negroes/Blacks..

In fact most whites always like the boys from the south that are not as aggressive and niggerly..lol,lol,lol as folks lime me and those in my orbit

Blacks in the south and the islands other thsn Haiti actually feared white folks..This in part created this almost pitiful victimhood narrative whites have leverage over the decades to divide us as well..

Recently my wife visited South Africa she was upset thet whites still lording over Black folks and many Blacks there still bowing down

It is quite a journey from being a slave with the wounds of white racism still contaminating one's being.Recovery is a bitch..

This condition is still present in the states

Plane Ideas said...

Zinn's inferences about the horrific nature of slavery in the America's is not gospel many other Black historians disagree and view the slavery by european nations in Africa much more lethal and depraved....

the author of the playboy piece wrote about the aftermath, and said exactly what i said: whites just shouldn't use the word.

he also doesn't think mayer is a racist based on his comments but doubts most people will focus on the context and depth of understanding his words actually showed--the comments on this blog alone are proof of that.

excerpts below. full story at link.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-02-12/john-mayers-terrible-week/?cid=hp:mainpromo4

My Mayer article is 6,870 words, long for a magazine article in 2010. It was quickly reduced to something 140 characters or less: Mayer is a racist. This isn’t surprising. If you use a word that should never pass any white person’s lips, it surpasses any other words you say. Mayer used the word, in imaginary italics or finger quotes, to make a point:

As a white musician who has worked extensively with black musicians, he was discussing the paradox and impossibility of a “hood pass” (the notion that some whites are more authentically “black” than others), and demonstrated the paradox by embodying it via an N bomb. Commenting on white privilege, he stepped right in it.

On Twitter, writer and hip-hop activist Harry Allen described Mayer’s refutation of a “hood pass” as “a powerful, pointed statement.” It’s also a tough way to prove a point. To put it in Twitter argot, “The word > the point.”

Some people read the full article and returned to Twitter to dispute charges of racism, which nonetheless seemed to have become a truism.

Maria, I agree with you. Unfortunately most Blacks won't. But that's the nature of racism. It fills the perpetrator AND the victim with blinding prejudice.

Reading the article I came away with no axe to grind with Mayer and I am sure his band doesn't either. But each individual will come away with a different perception of Mayer according to their own afflicted prejudices. And they will swear up and down they are right, and even attack others for having a different opinion.

Which is why the term 'uncle Tom' was created in America@..."Btw Thrasher, many times I have worked with professional black Americans who relocated to my parts of the Carib. In my observation, most of them are usually the ones who openly spew apologetic ideals about white supremacy, and, or they tend to display docile and submissive behaviors towards the very white minorities on the island. Just my observation.(Love(heart)audiobooks)

I'm really enjoying your comments and insights here. Although it's hard getting through all the bluster & personal attacks to get to them.

Maria, respectfully, sometimes your priviledge comes down like a sledgehammer. This blog's administrator is black & *most* of his commenters are black (from different parts of the world). Maybe you could tone down the priviledge when you're here. The people here get a daily ration of it in real life.

@Thrasher - cosign.

Maria is currently taking the abuse from the Anonymous trolls, but I've been there and will be again. One particular troll targets white women who dare to enter the conversation on this blog; often resorting to suggestions that his target "wants to be Black" or something similar. That's not a criticism I hear from Black folks, so I'm assuming this particular troll is a white man who is trying to keep his women in line.

lol--good luck with that

@Temple - thank you

I am sure maria can handle it..I am a pagan and an advocate of raw reality..Trolls have value as a matter of fact I am working on a commentary about Trolls in chat forums and the utility of them...

I do have a problem with people hiding under black face, being gay in the closet, surrogate and vicarious personhood types....

Again I like it pagan style staight with no chaser...I always am calling out black folks in the burbs who are inbedded negroes..

if you're tracking anything i have said on this thread, it's that i don't white think people should use the n-word.

please show me what "privilege" i have evidenced. here or anywhere else on this blog. i am certainly open to hearing substantive criticism.

what i find really funny is that fly/microscope says no one thinks i'm white, and that i'm a "n- with a pizza," how sweet. yeah, i think i know the blog owner is black and so are most of the posters.

seems i can't please anybody. good thing i'm not trying.

RT, i do thank you for seeing what's happening.

@Maria,

why not ignore some of the offensive attacking trolls? They love to hate, and will target you for anything you do or say. Those jerks naturally fall on the low end of consciousness and humanity, anyway. Why wallow in the mud with turkeys?

I hope you will continue to be yourself and NOT give power to those asses by trying to please them. You have every right to be here as anyone else, so don't let them drive you away.

This Mayer seems to be a creep on many levels. Nuff said!

We have a term of extreme endearment,"negrito", and I certainly wouldn't like it said to me or mine by a white person, because what would they know about being "negrito" ???

My grandma and her family were slaves in the caribbean. My mom would tell us stories of the harsh treatment,injustices, shackles and killings, her mother related to her. The one thing that was not too common was the separation of the families, they were usually all kept together.
My grandma wanted to, in her words, "fix the race" so she married a white spaniard, that he was slightly alcoholic didn't matter, just that he was white! She tryed to train my mom to think this way also, but my mom rebelled, and this caused her problems. So in my grandma's black household,('cept for granpa) no black boyfriends were allowed!!!

There is little slave life documentation, although I once found a book in a library with pictures of slaves in shackles and chains in Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo et al.
There is a saying that Caribbean cuisine is black cuisine, because when Spain gave up on it's non productive islands and virtually left them to fend for themselves, the blacks that stayed behind made do with the plants and foods they had bought from Africa. When the islands were populated again by Spaniards and others they naturally accepted this cuisine which was/is tasty indeed!!!

So to those that have partners and those that don't, have a happy Valentines night :P

Thank you MMM!

And here's another newsflash.

There are a whole lot of sistas out here who are loving, supportive, positive and respectful.

You get exactly what you give in relationships folks.

Enjoy your Valentine's Day.

I'm enjoying mine.

You are absolutely right. But there are always 'one' or 'two' who are not.

Hope your Valentine's Day was great.

Actually the Black Panther party did have some origins in Alabama. If nothing else, their logo, the black panther was first used by the Lowndes County Freedom Organization because so many of the voters were illiterate they needed a symbol that was recognizable. They were known as The Black Panther Party. It's fairly well-known that Stokely Carmichael was a liaison between SNCC, the Panthers and the LCFO. Huey Newton and Bobby Seale volunteered with the LCFO and named their party after them.

Hi La!

you said:

"The fact that he said it without having regards for the black female fan base does have cause for some concern."

La, alot of that has to do with the undeniable fact that bw, in this country, collectively, have demonstrated that we will continue to fund those that mistreat, ridicule and mock us. until we as a group, can stop with the "we are not a monolith" nonsense--as if any group is---and exact an economic penalty for those that would dare to disrespect us, folks won't think twice about...disrespecting or not considering us.

there are no victims at this point, only volunteers.

offline, i encounter bw daily that refuse to think along these lines. convenience seems to take precedence over conviction and principle. as long as we send that message as a group, we should not feign surprise when folks convey that they got the message. fiercely fighting to protect bm leave very little energy for bw to protect ourselves. lol!

uh, where were all these folks that can see there are good bm out there on the other post? can't ya'll see and speak to the good bw when folks are ridiculing bw? can you do it without prompting? when bw are being lamblasted, where are ya'll and why are you so quiet? how can you tell so easily in those instances that folks are talking about "some" and not "all" bw yet are so easily confused when folks speak to "some" bm? i am just asking...

...hopefully, i will live to see balance return to black folks.

blessings,
fp
