"One of the first big hints that Donald Trump wasn’t a great presidential candidate came roughly eight years ago, when he spoke at a forum hosted by the Republican Jewish Coalition. Trump told attendees, “You’re not gonna support me because I don’t want your money. You want to control your politicians.” He added, “I’m a negotiator — like you folks.”
In other words, the then-candidate tried to appeal to Jewish voters by peddling antisemitic rhetoric, as if the audience would find it compelling.
Roughly eight years later, Trump is now running a third campaign, and as NBC News report suggested, the Republican appears to be repeating his mistakes: Instead of making antisemitic comments to a Jewish audience, Trump brought a racist message to a Black audience.
Former President Donald Trump claimed that Black people like him because he has faced discrimination in the legal system, which is something they can relate to.
I was taken aback last week when Fox News contributor Raymond Arroyo said — out loud and on the air — that Trump would fare well with Black voters because the former president is now selling sneakers, and as Arroyo put it, “they love sneakers.”
But in case that weren’t quite head-spinning enough, consider the Republican’s Friday night remarks at the Black Conservative Federation’s annual gala. It was a speech in which Trump:
- Compared his alleged criminal activities to African Americans’ centuries of struggles. (“I got indicted a second time and a third time and a fourth time, and a lot of people said that that’s why the Black people like me, because they have been hurt so badly and discriminated against, and they actually viewed me as I’m being discriminated against.”)
- Claimed he’s “being indicted for you, the Black population.”
- Claimed “the Black population” has embraced his mug shot more than others. (“You see Black people walking around with my mug shot, you know, they do shirts, and they sell them for $19 apiece. It’s pretty amazing — millions by the way.”)
- Declared during his speech, “The lights are so bright in my eyes that I can’t see too many people out there. But I can only see the Black ones. I can’t see any white ones, you see? That’s how far I’ve come. That’s how far I’ve come. That’s a long — that’s a long way, isn’t it? Ah, we’ve come a long way together.”
The Republican’s pitch is rooted in an offensive assumption: that Black voters will have exceedingly short memories. As my MSNBC colleague Clarissa-Jan Lim noted after his remarks, “Trump was sued for systematically turning away Black tenants in the 1970s. He took out full-page newspaper ads calling for the death penalty for the (now-exonerated) suspects in the Central Park Five case. He breathlessly promoted a racist ‘birther‘ conspiracy theory about former President Barack Obama, and about now-Vice President Kamala Harris (and most recently about Nikki Haley, for that matter). He called Haiti and African nations ‘s---hole countries.’”
This is, of course, just a sampling from a lengthy and overtly racist record.
It’s also a timely reminder that Trump apparently can’t help himself. There were plenty of ways in which the former president could’ve tried to make a compelling pitch to Black voters, but he apparently settled on his most ridiculous option." [Link]

That's definitely a WTF? moment. There are no words. And no, I'm pretty sure it ain't the black voters who are plagued by shockingly short memories. We can pretty much count on the black vote by this point. Trump has become arguably the most offensive presidential candidate of all time. Allowing for a different zeitgheist in the 1950s, I'm pretty sure he has outdistanced George Wallace and Strom Thurmond. He is more on a par with David Duke.
But unfortunately the black vote alone can't bring this thing home. We're going to need some help.
It's strange that the youth and young adult vote will be larger in this election than ever before. But there is little indication that Biden can count on getting a majority among these voters. I never could have predicted this.

To be fair, as long as you are completely subservient to Trump and don't place any value on democracy or the rule of law, then it probably is just a Pence thing. Pence was plenty awful, but his awfulness stopped short of assisting in the overthrow of democracy, which is where he got in trouble with Trump.
*Please note: Loads of Pence's fellow Christian evangelicals are true theocrats and are perfectly fine with overthrowing democracy, because they recognize it's the only realistic way of achieving their goals of controlling everyone's sex lives, forcing women back to being full-time stay-at-home housewives, and driving gay people back into the closet, as these are all extremely unpopular ideas.

Developing alternative ways of getting food and other aid into Gaza without Israeli cooperation (by sea or air) is laudable, but it is not estimated to be able to be achievable at the volumes necessary to prevent a famine.
It really is not a substitute for forcing Israel to do the right thing and open up more checkpoints and stop “over-inspecting” and slowing deliveries by land.

In context, in his speech, he was suggesting there would be an economic bloodbath if Biden got re-elected. (But why, though? Biden is already president right now and, despite Trump’s lies to the contrary, America is in macro-economically great shape. Inflation has fallen back into the normal range after recovering from the pandemic disruptions, economic growth is very healthy, we’re at full employment, and the Federal Reserve will soon start cutting interest rates.)
Anyway, no, Trump wasn’t talking about actual violence. This time. But he has, only about a million times previously, absolutely suggested his followers would riot if he didn’t get his way, so I’m not exactly sorry for him if people are misinterpreting some of his speeches now.
Apparently, Trump’s economic comments were heavily oriented towards cars. I guess he was talking to auto workers? So he was suggesting that cheap Chinese cars were going to flood into the country and put American auto workers out of business, and only heroic Trump would stop this (because he hates “Jina,” remember?)
This seems dubious. First, because Biden is pretty protectionist himself. Foreign countries have screamed about how he tailored all of his green tech subsidies so only American companies could get them. The tax rebates on electric cars basically now only apply to American brands. I highly doubt Biden will help China sell their cars here.
And this is assuming many Americans will even want to buy Chinese cars. Yes, they’re cheap, but they’re also frankly still sorta … garbage. I think the quality will need to improve quite a bit before they’ll sell here.
Trump says he can’t make the bond in his civil fraud case, because nobody will loan him the money.

The judge won’t have to accept what his properties are worth. Trump owes X number of dollars to the court, and he will just have to keep selling stuff until he comes up with X number of dollars.
It will be pretty telling, though, if Trump sells real estate and it ends up being worth way less than he had previously assessed it to be. Because that was the whole point of the case, that he’d lied and inflated property values in order to get loans.
Whatever he tries to do, it will have to be approved by Barbara Jones, who is overseeing his finances while the court decides what to do with him.

This is not a ruling on the merits of Texas’ law, but it’s insane to let it go into effect before such a ruling on the merits can occur. Only bad things can come from letting the racists in the Texas government call the shots.
Ironically, Trump probably won’t be very happy with his appointees on the Supreme Court turning a blind eye to lawless Texan authorities defying the Constitution. Trump previously induced House Republicans to block bipartisan immigration legislation. He did this because he does not actually want the problem at the border to be resolved. He in fact wants a pile-up of bogus asylum seekers at the border, as he obviously assumes voters will be too dumb to understand the reasons why this is happening, and will blame Biden instead.
Trump does not want Biden to be able to fix the problem the right way: by dedicating resources to rapidly evaluating asylum claims and deporting those who don’t qualify.
But now Texas may fix the problem the RACIST way: by simply ejecting anyone “foreign-looking” back across the border, and NOT processing any asylum claims at all.
A problem that has been fixed is a problem that cannot be blamed on Biden. Not what Trump had in mind.

I've come to realize there is an alternative scenario. The avid purchase of Truth Social stock may not be the result of a secret backroom deal involving a small number of big-time plutocrats, but instead the result of an Internet forum-organized action of a large number of small-time morons.
