Transition train wreck.

The election is over and MAGA is still angry. I guess owning the libs was their only goal in life. For the life of me I can't understand where all this hate and angst is coming from. It's not like the democrats are crying foul and whining about the results. (Although, I must say, there was something mighty fishy about Elon and his behavior.) Dems won't be storming the halls of power, and crying stolen election for the next four years. They are totally fine with sitting back and watching Mr. trump make a fool of himself while he destroys the country for a second time. Just look at his cabinet picks so far. The man is clearly not a serious actor.

Honestly, have you ever seen a bunch of less qualified people being selected to hold positions of power? How can these people cry DEI when they have all  these "failing up" characters being picked by trump to be a part of his team?  Pete Hegseth?! Seriously? Forget the fact that he is a scumbag and just a horrible human being, he is also clearly not qualified to do the job. The guy wrote a book about crushing the enemy, via an "American Crusade" for crying out loud! He writes about mocking, humiliating, and intimidating the American left (the enemy) and using the military to do it. The very military that Mr. trump picked him to lead. Yikes! And don't even get me started on Tulsi Gabbard. She has praised the Russians at every turn and is a huge fan of  Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian dictator. Trump picked her to lead *checks notes* the intelligence department. I could go on, but you get the point. I'm not even going to get into Matt Gaetz, because, thankfully, his appointment was scuttled. Imagine a man being investigated for sex trafficking and having sex with a seventeen year old girl, being picked to lead the very agency that investigates such things. The guy should be sharing prison soap with Diddy, but he is a white male republican, so the same rules do not apply.

Trump feels embolden to pick these clowns based on fealty and not qualifications. He believes that he had this resounding mandate from the American people. On further review, he did not. As more election results come in, we can see that his margins are getting smaller and smaller, and he did not win a majority of the popular vote. 49.87% is not going to cut it. He won by a a couple of hundred thousand votes across key swing states, and had those totals been different we would be looking at quite a different outcome. I was guilty of overstating the level of Mr. trump's victory myself (see my previous post), and I was wrong.  Sadly, like everything else with trump, perception became a false reality.

But take heart Harris supporters, If you voted for her you should be pretty relieved and chill right now. Just sit back and enjoy the trump train roll off the tracks. The next four years will be one wreck after another. You will get to say I told you so when it's all said and done.

Let's just hope , for all our sakes, that there will be someone left to say it to.

I have zero sympathy for any magat that voted for this clusterfuck. drumpf promised again to make deficits disappear just as he did the first time around. He nearly doubled national debt in just 4 short years.

I hope he takes away Obamacare from these useless idiots. Takes aweay their foodstamps and SS, too. Serves them right for failing to learn to read and comprehend.

The goddamn Republicans have pulled a massive switch-up on us Democrats, probably not even on purpose. The Democrats used to be the party that had liberals in it, and they used to be the ones who questioned the status quo (and got called commies for our trouble).
Some time ago, let's just say in the nineties when Newt the fuck Gingrich abandoned the idea of governing in favor of turning the government into a 24/7/365 campaign, that left the whole of the task of governing to us Democrats, both the liberal and conservative aspects of it, because of all of the people who are harmed when the government stops doing its job.
That's how the goddamn Republicans got us to take on the role of defenders of the status quo, and it's just hard to win elections that way, especially with the billions of dollars in right wing propaganda all singing the same "the government is the problem" hymn from the same "lower taxes for the filthy rich" hymnal.
All of Fergus' picks are sadly predictable: they are those who will defer to Fergus on all matters, who he thinks look good on TV, who piss off everyone who didn't vote for him, and who are capable of one thing above all else: damaging or outright destroying the agencies that they are tapped to lead.
A full on nuclear attack from Russia would likely be less damaging to the United States of America, given the hollowing out of the Russian military, and you know that Putin is quite pleased with the return on the hundred million dollar investment he made in trying to swing the election.
We will likely endure. We have seen adversity, some worse than what we seem to be facing. That said, not everyone will endure. Women will die of treatable pregnancy complications. Poor people will die from lack of access to healthcare. Immigrant families will be shipped off to countries they don't know anything about. All because a huge block of the American electorate operates under the luxury of not needing to know a damn thing about their government. You would think that a government that works well enough to facilitate that would be popular, but apparently the ignorance doesn't stop with the subject of the government.

Sorry, but I’m not feeling super chill.

Right now we can live in denial, because it’s still the Biden administration for another two months.

But then the sh*tshow begins, and it’s going to be an endless series of infuriating, destructive moves from Trump and the Republicans after that, for the next two years at least (in the best case that these malevolent vandals don’t manage to dismantle our democracy so we CAN’T throw the bums out).

I can’t really enjoy laughing and pointing at Team Trump’s failures, since the country they are trashing is my own.

Was watching a movie from the 1950s recently, and while I know movies aren’t real life, the sense of optimism of that era was partly real. It’s hard to wrap my brain around how we got from then to now.

How did we get from that place — a country that tackled its problems and solved them — to being a country that now just throws massive, pointless collective temper tantrums, which is all that the movement around Trump boils down to? Brains switched off, rage cranked up to eleven, smashing things up while accomplishing nothing useful. How bad do things have to get before the tantrum comes to an end?

Welp, I'm not even gonna say I told them so. I'm just waiting to see if these fools actually try to deport millions of people who pick our crops and clean our hotel rooms. I'll be fine, I have a good union job with benefits so enjoy your wins and MTG as a committee chair. LOL!

“‘the sense of optimism of that era was partly real’ um, ok. Depends on how dark your tan was.”

Actually, I don’t think even that’s true. Black folks had to be plenty optimistic back in the day to fight for civil rights! They had to believe that racism was a problem that could be solved, with enough effort and determination.

But I will say that in this current moment, the people who are lashing out and seeking irrational (non-)solutions to our national problems do seem to skew heavily white.

You’re missing some context here.

1) Northern Democrats supported the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. Only the Southern Democrats opposed it.

2) As a result of passing those laws being passed, white Southerners bailed out of the Democratic Party and joined the Republican Party, who had begun running racist election campaigns to win them over. It’s the reason why the GOP now “owns” the South — because they are a pro-racism party.

3) You know all of this but are pretending not to, because you are a manipulative liar.

Hegseth’s Mother Accused Her Son of Mistreating Women

November 29, 2024 at 11:24 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 74 Comments

“The mother of Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of defense, wrote him an email in 2018 saying he had routinely mistreated women for years and displayed a lack of character,” the New York Times reports.

Wrote Penelope Hegseth: “On behalf of all the women (and I know it’s many) you have abused in some way, I say… get some help and take an honest look at yourself.”

She also wrote: “I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around and uses women for his own power and ego. You are that man (and have been for years) and as your mother, it pains me and embarrasses me to say that, but it is the sad, sad truth.”

“Looks like Joe has had enough of this bullshit ad is thinking of pardoning his son Hunter.”

He did it. I had suspected Joe’s promise not to pardon his son was one he was never going to keep.

And not only has he pardoned Hunter for the tax evasion and the (frankly ridiculous) gun charges. He preemptively blanket pardoned Hunter for any and all federal lawbreaking he could conceivably have committed in the last decade. If Hunter did it, it don’t count.

While this may seem extreme (hell, it is extreme), I do on some level understand it. It is highly likely that evil bastard Trump is going to weaponize the justice system against his perceived enemies, and he has already severely demonized Hunter in the right-wing press as some kind of monster. It is easy to see them fabricating additional, baseless federal charges to persecute Hunter, just to please Trump’s slavering, moronic fanbase.

Now, they can’t.

But, suddenly, they will be sounding a lot like Trump. They will have to denounce the system as rigged. Because at that point, it actually will be rigged, for real, because Trump will have rigged it.

That is the context of Biden’s pardons. Maybe he wouldn’t have done it if he’d won a second term, or if (after he dropped out) Kamala Harris had won. But with Trump returning to the White House, all bets are off.

“Trump Threatens to Hit Hamas If Hostages Aren’t Released”

As if Trump has any more idea how to find Hamas than the Israelis do. So I guess he will act like the Israelis and bomb more Palestinian civilians? It hasn’t worked so far to get the hostages back, but hey, why not just continue with a failed plan? Sounds smart.

That's the switch the goddamn Republicans have brought for us over the last few decades. The Democratic party used to be the one with the liberals in it, and they used to be the ones questioning the status quo on a whole range of things.
After the goddamn Republicans just stopped governing and tried to turn the government into a 24/7/365 campaign, the Democrats, who actually care about the people harmed when the government doesn't do its job, had to do the job that the goddamn Republicans refused to do in order to keep those folks from that harm.
Politically, though, that put them in the position of having to stand up for the status quo, and you don't win elections that way, no matter how good of a job you have been doing.
And it pulled the focus of the party away from the issues it really cared about, giving it a feeling that voters pick up on that there are other priorities they care more about than the ones they are left to campaign for.
I don't know whether simply returning to our core values can win us future elections, but I think we have to do that anyway, and try to get those values associated with the repairs we will be called upon to do when Fergus' administration inevitably crashes and burns.
The question is how do we keep the electorate from wandering off and voting for the next snake oil salesman the minute they get their lives back.

There's the million dollar question. Republicans break shit, Dems have to be the adults and fix things and when things are back to normal we elect Repubs again. Rinse and repeat.

I’m pretty skeptical that the Democrats can’t advocate for democracy and also simultaneously promote practical left-wing policies that would help people. This doesn’t seem that unfeasible (although to accomplish this, you will probably have to stop campaigning with Liz Cheney). So far, though, all of their warnings about Trump’s authoritarianism have fallen on deaf ears, and Republicans seem to incur no cost for their cheating.

So here’s the problem with that: If Republicans cheat constantly and shamelessly, but Democrats don’t, that confers an advantage to Republicans. If the Democrats don’t find some different advantage of their own that would somehow offset this, then they’re guaranteed to lose. Which is what’s been happening.

Eventually, Democrats will get tired of losing, tired of always bringing a banana to a gunfight, and so they’ll be forced to start cheating just as aggressively. And now nobody is maintaining any of the norms of democracy anymore, so it dies and everything spirals toward violence.

Pretty much our best shot is to get democracy reform passed right out of the gate the next time we get a backlash trifecta, like we tried to do last time but were stopped by Manchin and Sinema. Although getting the senate back will be hard (the maps aren't very favorable the next couple of cycles), and convincing a simple majority to bypass the goddamn filibuster to get it passed won't be easy.
It's been done multiple times for various bills, though, so it is not beyond the realm of possibility.

The answer would be “none.” Hunter was the only Biden family member or associate that the right-wing-o-sphere turned into a hate object and spun conspiracy theories around.

It’s obviously not great that Hunter dodges sentencing for tax evasion (although he has now paid his back taxes plus a penalty), while most of the rest of us dutifully pay our taxes.

But on the other hand, it’s pretty satisfying that all the Biden Crime Family conspiracy theory clowns will never, ever get their imagined revenge on a dude who never harmed any of them, and will instead be told to sit down and STFU. That’s quite enjoyable, actually.

Just a cursory glance at this tells me everything I need to know about the commission’s ridiculous conclusions: 1) COVID is no big deal — just the flu, really — so absolutely nothing should have been done to protect Americans from it. COVID restrictions were such an inconvenience, guys! But also: 2) COVID WAS AN APOCALYPTIC HORROR AND A HISTORIC CRIME AND CHINA DID IT TO US, THE EVIL SLANTY-EYED BASTARDS! WE SHOULD NUKE THEM!

Never mind that these two conclusions are contradictory. Nothing has to make sense, if you’re a Republican.

It might have looked better if he’d waited until Hunter was sentenced on the tax and gun charges in December (assuming that was still the schedule of events, and it actually went forward at that time). And if the sentences handed down were way outside of sentencing norms for those charges, he could then have maybe commuted them to something more reasonable.

But I think he was still always going to have to issue that blanket pardon covering any other possible crimes because, well, you don’t know what kind of vindictive, baseless, bananas charges the incoming Trump DOJ might decide to throw at Hunter next year. Crazy people are going to be running the government.

So in the end, Biden was going to have to either accept looking somewhat bad, or else just let Trump possibly judicially crucify his son solely for the entertainment of the neanderthal Fox News audience.

Paul Krugman is retiring from the NY Times. That’s a major bummer, since he is a reliably sane voice on economic matters, and an enjoyable read as well.

He says he’s going to keep writing and is looking for more freedom to say whatever he likes than what is afforded under the Times editorial rules. Not sure what this means, exactly. Is he going to move to another media outlet, or just start a Substack?

dinthebeast said...

Not surprising. I had a digital subscription to the NYFT just so I could read him. Years ago his newsletter wasn't behind the paywall, and you could read his column if you deleted your cookies first. Then they clamped down and offered a subscription for $4/mo. As of last year they raised it to $20 and so royally pissed me off that I cancelled and will never, ever give them another penny.
I would kick a few his way for a Substack. Not only do I find his writing worthwhile, but i discovered several of my favorite bands from the bottom of his newsletter.
And I would like to once again thank Bloviating Ignoramus

Yeah, this sucks. At the moment, there’s not much alternative, though, since the bottom fell out of print advertising rates. Newspapers that have been able to put their stuff behind a paywall, like the Times, are surviving. The ones that aren’t popular enough to get people to pay for subscriptions are simply dying. It is highly destructive to not have good, in-depth news media. This trend is leaving the public pig ignorant about the way the world works, and wrecking our democracy.

Really, access to news should be free, or at least cheap. A new news-financing model is needed. Canada and Australia have proposed taxing tech giants to finance the news media, since the tech giants are the ones who gutted advertising rates and destroyed the old newspaper business model.

Could a tech tax work? Remains to be seen. But something has to be done. It is not acceptable to just have the public be brainwashed by lies on Twitter and Facebook.

dinthebeast said...

Right. And the goddamn Republicans benefit from the mass distribution of lies, which is dirt cheap, while real verified facts are expensive and require support to arrive at and distribute.
Meanwhile it requires a certain acquired skill to sift through the information available and come up with anything real, and requiring that of the mass of the electorate is unrealistic.

Assad is an evil monster, so most Americans would cheer for the toppling of his regime. Except for the fact that the rebels are apparently Islamic fanatics, so Syria might be about to turn from a secular dictatorship into a theocratic dictatorship. Which would be … not great.

We can't know from here whether the new regime in Syria has an actual chance at succeeding, but a lot is riding on the question.
Beyond the lives of the people who live there now, there is also the question of the refugees in their millions who could possibly have a chance to return if a stable Syria were to emerge from this.
You know, the "migrants" that have been used by the right wingers in Europe to win elections for the last decade.

This statement from the article you linked is baffling:

“Mangione has retweeted Tucker Carlson and was an Elon Musk and Peter Thiel stan, but also had an ‘ill will toward corporate America,’ according to a 3-page document of the suspect's.”

So this guy recognizes the evils of capitalism as applied to healthcare, and to such an extent he’s willing to murder a healthcare exec. And he has “ill will toward corporate America,” but also admires … Tucker Carlson, Elon Musk, and Peter Thiel? He thinks those millionaires and billionaires are, what, altruists? Marxists? WTF is going on?

We are a country of people who are angry, but somehow don’t know who to be angry at — including this Mangione dude, who appears to be a privately educated Ivy League grad! He’s furious at the greed of health insurance execs, but would probably vote against the politicians who would rein in their greed.

So many people in this country have nonsensical, incoherent views. Starting with the working-class people who voted for Trump and the Republicans, because they’re supposedly fighting the “elites.” Which is preposterous — those ARE the f*cking elites. The elites are the ultra-wealthy people who control how much you earn, not intellectuals who say stuff you maybe don’t agree with (or just plain don’t understand).

Wasn’t the Unabomber just sort of insane? I don’t recall the details. My impression was he had a generalized hatred for technology, but his beliefs didn’t fall on the traditional left/right political spectrum. Mostly because they were too illogical to lead to any kind of policy agenda at all.

There’s certainly a weird thing now where right-wingers identify with scrappy underdogs in movies. For a while, there were some right-wingers adopting symbolism from the movie “V for Vendetta.” I would immediately think: Wait a minute, you know the right-wingers are the BAD GUYS in that movie, right?? The oppressive, fictional government are standard-issue fascists.

From that article: '... If our nation wishes to stay happy, prosperous, and safe, rioters must be crushed completely with the full weight of the American justice system. Our civilization will only ever be as strong as our will and resolve to defend it. Let the shooting start.”

On January 6, 2021, the entire riot could have been put down by one platoon of Marines. That would have been it. No insurrection, no defiling of the Capitol, no dead or disabled cops. No largest investigation in the history of the DOJ, no federal charges against the sitting president.
But that is not what we do in America. Or at least it shouldn't be, and the reasons for that used to be obvious. I'm afraid now the goddamn Republican propaganda machine has far too many questioning why we shouldn't just shoot them before they get due process. They are entering the fuck around zone, though, and anyone with two functioning neurons to rub together knows what comes next.
