School should be for learning.

I have gotten a lot of e-mails about the story I am going to blog about. Some folks have commented about it on this blog, and some bloggers have written posts wondering why I don't have the (rhymes with stalls) to blog about it.
What are they all talking about? I will tell you. Because I do have the (rhymes with stalls) to blog about it.

It seems that recently at predominantly African American South Philadelphia High, a number of Asian student have come under attack and have been the victims of gang style "beatdowns". Now some of those Asian students are boycotting school until Philly's finest and the school district can guarantee their safety.
My first thought when I heard this story was that the media had it wrong. I am somewhat familiar with the dynamics of South Philly's Asian population, and I didn't think that it would be a stretch to say that it all could have been gang related on both sides. Or, that this was just kids retaliating for something that had happened before. But knowing that I was going to blog about it I asked around, and from what I have been hearing my initial take on the incident was wrong.

There is no excuse for the behavior of these Negroes. They need a serious intervention. You do not attack another person because of their race. You just don't.

They messed with your family member, they are from another high school, they live in another part of town and you are at war with them over turf...whatever. But race? Not cool young bucks, not cool. And Philly School District can we stop with the bull s&*^ that this is not racially motivated? Come on now, pretending that there is no problem won't make it go away. It was racially motivated, and if every one of those black kids doing the attacking were honest that is what they would tell you.

'"We are outraged," said Xu Lin of the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corp., who works with immigrant students. "The parents are very, very concerned."'

I don't blame you Xu Lin, I would be "outraged" as well.

"School officials say this week's clashes were an aberration that belie strenuous efforts to improve race relations and cultural awareness. "What gets lost in all of this is the fact that the school, the community and the students have worked hard over the past two years to foster that kind of positive learning environment," said James Golden, the school district's chief safety executive. "Despite what happened this week, that positive learning environment prevails."

Mr. Golden WTF are you talking about? A "positive learning environment"? No sir, that's not a positive "learning environment". It would be a "positive learning environment" if you were training for a heavy weight championship fight. It's not a "positive learning environment" if you want to learn in school. Damn! And people wonder why inner city schools are so f&*^d up. (I am trying to cut down on my cursing so hang with me.)

So where does this come from? First, let me say that black folks are not alone when it comes to this type of antagonistic behavior towards other racial groups. But lately, in the age of Obama, black folks have come under heightened scrutiny for their actions. It's why this is a national news story. We represent the same group that the president of these divided states comes from, so our group is under much more scrutiny now. See what those blacks did, they are just as racist as everyone else. Now that they are in power [snicker snicker snicker] there is no telling what they will do. This is a favorite tactic of some conservatives because they can use it to deflect from their own racism.

But I digress. Back to my question: Where does it come from? Home? Ignorance passed down from generation to generation? Peer pressure? Maybe. A sick form of jealousy? These kids come from neighborhoods where the only people they see with businesses are Asians. Is there some hidden resentment for that? Or is it just a lack of exposure to other cultures? These kids have barely left the confines of their own neighborhoods -and they are in high school now. Forget China, these kids have never been to Chinatown and it's in their own damn city.

I would suspect that the behavior of these students (and I use that word loosely) can be traced to a little of all of the above. Whatever it is it's wrong, and it needs to be checked. The school board has suspended ten students. Let's hope that if there is a real racial problem at Southern High, these suspensions will be just the tip of the iceberg.

"Using Lin as a translator, ninth-grader Chaofei Zheng said Friday that he wants to get an education, make friends and improve his English. He said there are nice students at the school and that he doesn't understand the reason for the attacks."

Chaofei, neither do I.

Check out the host theorists and educational researchers who have studied culturally relevant or culturally responsive pedagogies with black youth (i.e. Geneva Gay, Ladson-Billings).

Yep, I am guilty. I saw Hope's name and thought I would use Chastity. I don't have an official screen name. Guess I am cheesy that way :) It better than Hope2 or something :)

Profound and ordinary giftedness is by its nature rare, so your assumption that Blacks produce less gifted kids then others just feeds into the racist meme that Blacks are inferior intellectually and that any glimmer of acumen is the exception and not the rule.

e black race is unique in many ways

ie

we uniquely pay black menmillions to degrade black women in song and videos

do you lament that uniqueness too?

we will never fix any wound in whispers or silence

nor will those other silent whispering races...

harping on exceptions will never fix any norms

Please. I am well aware of the sexism in the Black community and take issue with how Black women are degraded by Black men (that would be the only point I agree with you on)—for public consumption. Black women have always been fighting a losing battle in the media, this country, globally, and within the community—but that is not the topic of the discussion at this time.

I care about my community and somehow focusing on what I can fix and by living my life by example is somehow not facing reality and putting my head in the sand. Give me a fucking break. If any of you so enlightened people who know so much about Black people then you would know it’s always been a constant effort that goes sight unseen-because the super-predators, the bullies and our supposed flagrant hypocrisy speaks for my community and my experience as a Black person in said community.

I will repeat on more time—Many Blacks are quite aware of the problems that are in the community but I refuse to wear the hair shirt and self flagellate this overarching Black dysfunction for the disgusting consumption of racists and Blacks who get off pointing fingers at Black people who think we are too stupid to understand our own problems. You, Hope Chastity and the rest of the White racist coprophiliacs can keep cannibalizing on our inferiority, dysfunction, and irredeemable inhumanity, but I am not playing along.

strange that you call us who save others cannibals

and regard those like you who ignore those who need saving as successful

nothing causes more failure than those who starve less fortunate persons by refusing to share the repasts of unique blessings

i think elitists should all have been born swine...then perhaps a poor person could have at least dined upon them and then thrived

when elitists pigs like you eat swine, they become literal cannibals...

none of the laurels that you rest upon will save one child in the hood

Alicia -
I have heard the argument about quality of education = $$ spent = success rate all too often, and it is a fallacy.

We moved to this area because the schools ranked as "Time" magazine's school of the year, yada yada yada.

All the schools were brand new, top notch facilities, >90% of teachers were experienced with Master's degrees, etc.

My special needs son was beaten up repeatedly at school - and I complained, but the school ignored our written and verbal complaints. It culminated with him getting pushed down a flight of stairs. That was the end -- I pulled him out of public school -- "Award Winning" and all -- and enrolled him in a small private school with a crappy physical property, (no comparison to the "top-notch" public school we just left) where he thrived and was SAFE.

A few years later, we're back in our same neighborhood and enroll the youngest in the local public school - and nothing's changed -- although the demographics have changed -- there are now some black families in this previously all-white area.

We pulled our youngest out of the school after the first two weeks -- and are homeschooling. We will NEVER be going back to the public school, and I'll be damned if I'm going to fund it.

Anyways, school violence is NOT a race issue. It's happening in all schools and in ALL races.
jazz artist were the 'hip-hop' of its early day -- rebellious 'race music' for mostly of dope dealers, gang bangers and party goers.
L.A.C.

I FIRMLY DISAGREE WITH YOU.
Here is why.

There are two aspects that need to be evaluated:

1) The aura of a "music scene"

2) The CONTENT of the art.

I agree with you that the Jazz man was seen as negative. Drugs, booze and fast women was their game (or at least per those who scrutinized them). They were the bad boys. Even among Christian Blacks this was called "The Devil's Music" per the dancing and carrying on that was provoked.

I strongly disagree with you on point #2. The fact that the bulk of the product was instrumental - it was not the "content" itself that was damnable. Even the Jazz vocalists such as Lady Day, Diana Washington, Bessie Smith, etc have NOT ONE RECORD on par with the vulgar lyrics of Lil Kim or other potty mouthed females of today.

On the male side of the house - today's thug rappers are "The Voice of the Murderous Street Pirates". They talk about KILLING Black people who dis them. They talk about slanging drugs into the Black community. They talk about their wealth that they have stored up around their necks or riding on some 24's.

Thus the INTRINSIC content of this art form today is CONTEMPTIBLE. One only needs to read the lyrics NOT observe how people choose to do "dirty dancing" to it as we had to do from back in the day.

I still struggle to understand why those of you who are so expansive and open minded about LYRICS would also be the first one's protesting if the Klan came out with a rap genre which largely talked about the very same themes as it relates to Black folks.
uhh, Grinder, i read your list, and honestly, what i thought was, who makes you or me an expert on music or "culturally supported"?
CC Kathy:

This is an easy answer.

There is a mandate for the "owners of" the community in question to be out front in DEFINING and DEFENDING the culture of their choosing IF they seek to produce DIRECTED OUTCOMES that are productive and which accentuate the productive elements of a people while suppressing the self-destructive elements.

Those who sit back and take an "the content of all voices are equally valuable" approach will find themselves OVERRUN with dysfunctional messages that so frequently fill the void in this unmanaged state of affairs.

"What's even worse is that whites have decided, in the time honored tradition, to co-opt hip-hop, so where we once had Dave Brubeck, Elvis Presley, and Bill Evans, now we have Eminem."

You know Grinder I'm starting to realize that you are really a stupid motherfucker.

There is Chris Botti, Pat Metheny, Harry Connick Jr., as well as Christian McBride, Terence Blanchard, Stanley Jordan as well as scores of other young white and black contemporary musicians making beautiful improvisation, conceptual jazz and third stream music today.

You just can't help placing people in cultural or behaviorial boxes determined by race.

I don't think ad hominem attacks facilitate a meaningful discussion.

The only two points I wanted to bring out were:
(a) the public schools, in their current design, are failing ALL our kids, not just blacks/latinos/whites/(fill in the blanks). It is up to us to decide we're not going to accept that anymore.

(b) ALL schools are no longer safe zones -- and I am so tired of people pointing fingers and saying this is "just a black (or latino, or asian, or whatever...) issue. All our kids metaphorically suit up and go to war every day. And it has to stop. If it isn't skin color, they will find something else to fight about. Kids are getting attacked in "good" white schools as much as they are in any other school. The school admin told me they are not "obligated" to provide a safe environment for any student -- HOGWASH.

The issues that FN raises often go way beyond just the amount of pigmentation in your skin. By choosing to focus on what divides us, we lose sight of how we can solve the problem(s).

Don't forget the Irish "troubles" -- and that was long-term, "White-on-White" crime. I get to blow you up b/c you're not Catholic? Or you are Catholic, depending on whose side you're on? How crazy is that? That is NO different from what's going on everyday here.

However, focus on skin color, because that gives us a nice, easy way to divvy up the hater teams.

Stating up front that there are huge issues with public schools everywhere is not "elitist".

The really part that tears my heart open... although I don't subscribe in toto to the construct of tabula rasa, I do believe "nuture" is a big component ... as someone working in the schools, where is the line where fresh-faced kids filled with endless potential are turned into recalcitrant reprobrates on the fast track to trouble?

In 2005 I was part of a longitudinal study on adolescents in poverty in a rural southern state. At the time I came in it was in its 8th year. I cannot explain to you the layers of why young people in poverty behave the way they do, or how they learn to think in the manner they do. (unless its over CASES of wine) It has been an issue that I have been tackling for many years. having said that, I made a point for all of the students from across the WORLD involved in the study to allow the adolescents being studied to STUDY THE STUDENTS. The results were amazing. It gave the children in poverty an opprtunity to really see there were more simialities than differences in people. It also gave the students an opportunity to view the adolescents in a mannner that was more empathetic than sympathetic. Sometimes it really is about presentation. The school would do well to hire a conflict resolution counselor do some seminars for the students so that they can all be students again. (da nile aint da anser). Peace.
