As far as Tyler Perry is concern, there is nothing new here. There are no fully developed, empathetic characters in his movies. I'm not gonna dive into this fight about interracial dating. I'll just say I've had a couple of family members date/marry other ethnicities. The rest of the family would have rather seen them date their own, but in the end, you can't dictate what others eventually do. The comparison has to do with an ongoing Hollywood formula that characterizes black people in a very narrow and negative light. Those images of black people in Tyler Perry's movies are part of that system. I'm sure I can find some of his caricatures in Birth of A Nation.

So after I replied I called a friend of mine to get her opinion on your original statement. I read it to her and then she responded. She thought you were not trying to draw a parallel between Tyler movies and that of Birth Of A Nation. You were simply saying movies can be "influential". Of course, since she;s the "ying" to my "yang" (giving our opinion to each other, without fear of rejection) we continued the conversation for another hour. She's on the side of those that disdains Tyler's movies for it's alleged "negative" messages. I... on the other hand, do not feel a movie, or a series of movies, has that big of an impact on the development of a person's mindset. I believe a person's thinking pattern, morals and character flaws are more influenced by their immediate surroundings... good bad or indifferent. Those lessons start early in life... at home and those they surround themselves with, and their neighborhood.
The question that I am suggesting is sort of like... which came first, the chicken or the egg?
And this is were I am at. The overwhelming majority never really changes. So, reardless of what information we may receive (later in our lives) we don't really "change" until our backs are against the wall.
