Well, color me not surprised.

I always hate to blog about colorism, because it always opens up to all kinds of craziness from black folks. Honestly, I would avoid it if I could, because lord knows we- as black folks- have enough stuff that divides us. (This is coming from someone who calls his blog the Field Negro.)

But sometimes when other people start talking about colorism and how it affects A-merry-can culture we can't help but talk about it.

My man Anderson Cooper (him of the very white hair) is running a series on CNN which is eye opening. Of course it isn't anything new for those of us in the know. The "Doll Test" might have been over fifty years ago, but it might as well have been yesterday. Colorism is real, and, sadly, it effects our children more than anyone else. (Lately I have been thinking a lot about our children, and for all the wrong reasons .) Most of us end up falling in love with ourselves and who we are as we get older. We learn to appreciate people for who they are and not how they look. And, as a result, we get in where we fit in within the grand scheme of things as human beings. Most us us. Some of us, like the children in CNN's program, sadly buy into what society is selling in terms of what beauty is supposed to look like. As a result,we live our entire lives with society's twisted projection on us or projecting our own messed up pathologies on others. We didn't need some fancy University of Chicago professor to do a study for us to realize colorisms lingering
effect on all of us. (Maybe even the people producing the show. Think about it.)

"(CNN) -- A white child looks at a picture of a black child and says she's bad because she's black. A black child says a white child is ugly because he's white. A white child says a black child is dumb because she has dark skin.
This isn't a schoolyard fight that takes a racial turn, not a vestige of the "Jim Crow" South; these are American schoolchildren in 2010. "

So where do they get it? We can't blame it all on television and marketing. Most of this behavior is learned right at home. Don't front, you have all heard that black parent: "Tenisha get your black nappy headed ass over here before I tear you a new one." I don't know what goes on in some white homes with their little children, but I watched CNN, so I can only guess.

"Spencer was also surprised that children's ideas about race, for the most part, don't evolve as they get older. The study showed that children's ideas about race change little from age 5 to age 10."The fact that there were no differences between younger children, who are very spontaneous because of where they are developmentally, versus older children, who are more thoughtful, given where they are in their thinking, I was a little surprised that we did not find differences."

Don't be surprised professor Spencer; it's called the real world.

Mary McLeod Bethune, okay, she accomplished something.

But Marcus Garvery? I have a book titled Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey.

Here's one of his gems:

The greatest weapon used against the Negro is DISORGANIZATION.

Here's another:

If the Negro is not careful he will drink in all the poisons of modern civilization and die from the effects of it.

It is unfortunate that such a world-class doofus is a major figure in black history.

As you should know, the Black Star Shipping Company was a colossal failure. Meanwhile, Liberia today is as mush of a mess as it was when Garvey was touting it like it was a time-share.

Laurel my sister I have to point out that you did spend a lot of time suggesting that a long list of black leaders were chosen because they were light skinned. And I am being honest when I say I had never heard that particular argument put forth,

But I thought it was divisive and not true, but yet you now suggest that divided we fall and united we stand, and that we should work together.

Thats good but sister its not good to suggest to a multiracial group of readers of this blog that black folks are so color struck that even our important leaders were chosen because of their color and not their ability.

This reasoning sure doesn't sound good and doesn't make us look good in front of those who are always looking for ways and reasons to put us down as a race.

And I think Steve is right you said you dont or rarely support black leaders. How is that helping in bringing us together?

You have to be consistent my friend. But I understand your sentiment but you can't come on a blog (especially one like this one where most people are very capable of expressing themselves and making their points) and speak out of both sides of your mouth and then when folks respond by challenging or disagreeing, you act like someone tried to wound you!

Having said that I still agree with you we should find ways to unite. There are so many issues that we have to deal with that we are better served by finding as much common ground as possible.

mellaneous said...

No Slapz said:
"If the Negro is not careful he will drink in all the poisons of modern civilization and die from the effects of it."

Are you implying that Garvey was stupid because he thought there were poisons in the form of bad ideas in Western Civilization? You should have read more Garvey then you would know that he thought racial prejudice was a poison. And he also considered poisonous the idea that the needs of property and profit were more important than the needs of people

I think your prejudice is showing. Garvey was a very intelligent man. And anyone who says differently may just not be able to measure intelligence themselves.

My friend AB:

With all due respect:

1) I heard Michael Eric Dyson LAST YEAR say that he would vote for OBAMA AGAIN IN 2012. Again - the man was in office for something like 3 months when I heard him say it.

2) The point that you are missing is that:

A) There is "Attacks upon Obama".....with the hopes that he will GO LEFTWARD - all the while they are NOT trying to hurt him and thus risk putting a REPUBLICAN in office.

THEN

B) There is the ability to develop a TRANSPARENT FRAMEWORK of your PERMANENT INTERESTS:

* Education
* Public Safety
* Local Economic Situation
* Social Relationships

and then having the "Intellectual Curiosity" TO make note that even as you "WIN", placing "Mission Accomplished" signs all over - YOUR PERMANENT INTERESTS have not been met.

AB - You and I both know our IDEOLOGICAL differences.

My point as an observer of all that is going on is that the LACK OF AN INFRASTRUCTURE OF TRANSPARENCY WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY who can HOLD ALL OPERATIVES (Political, Corporatists, Social Reformists, Culturalists, Leftist and Right-wing) accountable to some standard measure of our PERMANENT INTERESTS.

Thus though you, Michael Eric Dyson and I might all be "critical" of Obama we ALL HAVE DIFFERENT AGENDAS.

For me I choose to put the ENTIRE Black Establishment and Progressive Establishment that is IN CONTROL OVER OUR INSTITUTIONS on trial and seek to FORCE THEM TO EXPLAIN why despite all of the "Winning" we still have massive problems within.

Unlike UptownSteve I am able to document my person THRESHOLD OF SATISFACTION in each of those bullet points above that would cause me to give PRAISE to the establishment if they were to meet it.

Alicia,

Girl we'll talk more later.

For these folks to blatantly deny the TRUTH regarding "Colorism" and Discrimination still existing within the Black Community when it smacks them right in the face, is beyond me.

Yes!

Black used to and STILL do vote for Black Leaders who are light-skinned and Brown-skinned with Straight, Wavy or Naturally Curly hair and light-colored eyes MORE so than Dark-Skinned Black Leaders with Kinky hair.

I don't practice such behavior but many Blacks STILL do.

This includes Blacks who reside in the North, South, East and West.

Does this imply that Light-skinned and Brown-skinned Blacks with Straight, Wavy or Naturally Curly hair and light-colored eyes are more intelligent or more qualified than Dark-Skinned Black Leaders with Kinky hair?

Of course not!

But that's reality whether you wish to admit it or not.

Just because you don't want it to be true, doesn't mean it isn't true.

The reason why several of you are disagreeing with me so harshly on this subject is because YOU know its STILL true and your ashamed!

Your ashamed that such ignorance STILL exists within today's Black Community but rather than Change, you choose to Fight anyone who wishes to Challenge & Expose such ignorance.

This is why I'm NOT backing down no matter how many stones you throw at me.

Field:

Because of the nature of nature of the African-Americans, it is my belief that the quest for self-identity has led to the belief that self-aggrandizement (gold flaked cielings, fleets of cars, gold chains, over priced diamonds, etc.) will give us the respect and recognition that we have earned through our contributions to this country and the world. Instead it has become one of the biggest enemies of the African-American,and thus created a false sense of identity. The need to find a way to be recognized is a clear indication of the insecurities that comes from the lack of knowlege, that heritage and culture brings.

Within the basic interior of any people is their history, and culture, like the inside of any human it's what makes them up (their genetics). When someone or something else creates that history and culture (as some would say genetically altered) you become the subject of the altering group. The need for for recognition is a clear indication as to why we as a people are lost in a quagmire of confusing identities. The results of which have become so diverse (light skinned dark skinned) that we in some ways have become estranged from each other; it should be noted that depending on which area of the world we were sent to, the disunity and confusion began.

Being abducted from Africa and washed of our great heritage and culture, has forced us to accept the cultures of the places we were dispersed. Thereby, making us orphans, lost in a quagmire of mis-education, and a false sense of who we are and were; inaddition to accepting the cultures that we were assigned to.

Understanding, African and African-American philosophy is sometimes difficult, but the bases of the difficulty lies in the transgressions of the ....
Additionally, there are those who have participated in the elimination and reconstruction of the culture and history of the African and African-American.

Although, there are those whose melodic sounds carry a tune of incomplete syncopation, that is probably due to their lack of the meticulous research required to bring about the understanding needed to prepare our people for their future.

So, let's see - I made a straightforward analysis and I get the typical strident rants from the moon-bat left (AB) and the tea party right (CF). Both of which miss the point entirely.

To Alicia and the other radicals, its fine to be critical of the President and I agree that many Black folks hold him up as some great Messiah. He isn't and should be treated no different than any other politician. And he's showing an authoritarian streak that's rather disturbing.

My issue is the myopic niche politics on the Netroots Left. First, many netroots folks are still caught up in the Messiah complex of Obama, its the disappointment of a failed Messiah. Obama's just one man and our problems as a nation were a long time coming.

The problem with many in the left blog-sphere is the idea that Obama's election would fix everything. Malarkey! Even if you transferred Mumia or Malcolm brain into Obama's body he'd still have over 500 other jokers (the Congress and Senate) who have their own agendas and concerns. And frankly, seeing how many liberal bloggers will advocate for one crazy idea without figuring out to compensate for undue consequences and a general lack of interests in hands on politics, shows they'd be bigger screw-ups than the folks we have now.

To CF and the tea party type lurkers - I have no problem with conservatives -- so long as they're principle and generally care about other people's welfare. I don't think that all left wing ideas can fix all our problems. And there are many folks on the right who have made salient and logic points about how to address our problems.

The problem is really three fold. First, the leadership on the right is blatantly corporatist. While most so-called moderates are as well, there are just a lot examples conservatives backing 'free market' solutions -- when the free market by definition doesn't give a crap about human beings. It cares about profit. Here's a clue CF, the main reason that cities have failed is because corporate right wingers in both parties (Reagan to Clinton) did everything they could to gut the Great Society initiatives. When you have federal officials literally paying American corporations to move overseas and out of industrial centers -- crime and decay will follow.

Second, the mainstream right is a little to comfortable with racism and authoritarianism. Anyone who defends the new Arizona law mind as well join the KKK.

The final point, similar to the first, the authoritarian streak that is rampant on the right. Its most highlighted in terms of personal life choices. There are too many on the political right get too worked up about personal issues that have nothing to do with them.

And BTW, since when is it a badge of honor to be with a Dark skinned Black woman? Plastering her (assuming she is really your woman)on the internet to score cheap political points is now the new thing ? Or is it just Political tool for Black men seeking the support of Black women.

God help the self hating Black man that goes around trying to trash Black Women. Could those chains be any tighter? I hope you are the lowest of them. Otherwise we are truly in our last days if there are any worse than you.

@ laraul:

You asked me this:

"Agape2010 is Maria supposed to be the White woman coming to our rescue?

Does the fact that she's white make her opinion anymore intellectual than our opinions?

No personal offense to Maria but Agape2010 used your comments as a mode of defense."

1) No. I do not see maria as coming to the rescue for blacks. Not to say that she does not have back friends who she may rescue on a personal level.

2) I commented on mari's statement because she used my name. I also think she takes what I write as a personal offense to her being, which is why she wrote what she did. What was her reward/motivation for using my name in an issue of colorism amongst blacks? I happen to think that her motivation/reward was to divide and conquer...she is white...the divide and conquer strategy and plan was invented by whites. I am a racism chaser as well. I have know whites that have been helpful to the black "cause" yet still have very racist tactics...because that is the world in which they were taught and know (some not all). Further by calling me (and you as well) a hypocrite did nothing to serve intellectuality or on intellgent opinion. It was her personal observation and a personal attack on me. Add to that, I don't view any of what I have read of her, thus far, as intellectual.

3) Yes. When attacked I my defend. Not al the time. I did not sy anything to maria directly because I did not hinkit was worth answering on a personal level. However, when the topic of colorism comes up, I would rather enlighten. maria is white...she used this blog and this post to attack me with respect to colorism...which I pointed out and find interesting that she ould use this sme divide and conquer tactic and apply it on this blog in 2010. This blog is unique, in that, the people who write here do have level of intelligence that allows an expression of different viewpoints. My POV is that maria is white and spoke negatively aboute and my color. The subjsect matter of the post. As I stated, I find it interesting although not amusing. Further, I do not have mode for maria. If you scroll up, my first response was directly related to the topic, without the use of anyone on this blog. maria's first response was to use my name, which she often does.

And...

LET ME JUST PUT THIS OUT THERE:

She don't rate all that with me :)

(The highlites were for you maria, I know you read me and we both know the reason for the highlites ;)

I hope this clears up any misunderstanding you may have in thinking that I view maria or any white person/group/people as my, or blacks, "rescuer".

Peace.

OK AB - First of all I am ROTFLMLSBAO...:)

And...

I do know that race is a term used to desrcibe to humanity. However, I use it because it is a term that most people can identify. Until everyone catches up to us...we have to meet people where they're at and bring them along...:)

PS - Rolling on the floor laughing my light skinned black ass off...;)

Now, who wants to argue the fact that I am black...? I do not have a problem accepting differences in people...just negativity.

Peace.

agape, you really crack me up.

your entire attack on me comes down to this: "she is white."

too damn funny!!!!!

here's the thing you can't debate, haven't debated, won't debate, and why are a joke to me and others here (as is laurel, MMM etc) is that you KNOW i speak the truth. review your own posts.

YOUR strategy is to divide and conquer. YOU have drawn attention to your own looks as has laurel for no reason at all. YOU were called out by LAbooks as well as me, and others--not just me. you are guilty of colorism 100% by your own words.

you're so right. i'm white. AND? all i did was call attention to your own words--that's not an attack, that's an observation.

i called you on your own shit so own it. why should anyone expect me to rescue anyone? you don't know me IRL. you don't have any idea who i am--and that's the point.

you don't rate with me, either. it doesn't matter who i am. what matters is your own words, which you and laurel cannot deny.
