Stay away from corruption Mr. Cao.

There is hope for my peeps after all. Looks like they finally voted out that crook, Dollar Bill Jefferson. Yes my friends, you all know how I feel about corrupt politicians, so I was quite thrilled to hear of this bit of news. The fact that Anh "Joseph" Cao is a republican makes no difference to me. If he is going to do a better job of serving the 2nd congressional district of Louisiana, well then good for him.

It's nice to see black folks rejecting corruption and patronage. (Although I have to wonder why this clown was in the run off in the first place) Now granted, the turnout was low (12% among black people) and Cao only won by two percentage points, but I don't ever want to hear that black people just blindly vote for the black guy because he is black again. That has never been true, and now, hopefully, people will stop saying it. Cao is a Vietnamese immigrant, (the first Vietnamese American to go to Congress) and his election makes Louisiana the one state where the rethugs can brag about a bigger tent. Their Governor is an Indian American, and now their Congressman from the 2nd district is a person of color as well. Good for the "boot."

I just hope the rethugs are taking notes. The demographics of the country is changing, you should try to change with it. You should be reaching out to more aspiring politicians of color to carry your party's banner and deliver your message.

As for Jefferson, his three decades of political power and patronage is history. And apparently quite a few of his cronies were voted out of local offices as well. So it looks like lights out for Dollar Bill, and for all practical purposes, his political career is over.

It couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy.

Mr. Cao, I don't know if you will be in Washington very long, and that might be a blessing for you. Look what Washington did to Bill Jefferson.

where black folk don't vote and white folk vote twice...

things must be looking up in the land of swamp and shrimp....

Field,

I really don't think an Indian face, or Asian face, or what have you will change the Republican party. The problem with the party is that the fundamentals don't work. Religion mixed with the free market hasn't worked and it won't work in the future. Notice Jindal dumped Hinduism for Catholicism, he knows what you have to do.

Anonymous said...

The problem with the Republican Party is when they reach out to people of color, they often do it with the backs of their hands as if they want to smack us upside the head for wanting to eat at the same table with them.

They can vote a token every now and then to show their "diversity", but until they stop their voter intimidation efforts, their cleansing of the voter rolls, and lumping all immigrants as "Mexicans" then they'll always be the old, white guy party.

Faith at Acts of Faith Blog said...

We know their big tent ideas will include excluding Blacks. I also wonder how Jindal would fare with the same red-neck Red state voters who didn't want the other brown skinned guy. Are they going to mistake him for one of the original citizens of the country? Or are they going to label him as someone with ties to a 'terrorist' country and call him a Paki?

? said...

Jindal is actually Indian and not a Pakistani. The rednecks might like the fact that he has sponsored legislation to promote "alternatives" to evolution though. More things change...

"Notice Jindal dumped Hinduism for Catholicism, he knows what you have to do."

LOL! I didn't kmow that. However, that is necessary in America.

I was surprised that Tony Blair too converted to Catholicism. It seems Western Politicians are taking the threat of Islam Fundamentalism extra seriously and are going back to Medieval basics.

Great post. Louisiana is close to home so I try to keep up with their politics as awful as they are. If this causes them to let up on the back scratching then it's certainly a good thing.

In Little Rock at the black polling centers, people will tape pictures along with names, so people will know how to vote apparently. Maybe ACORN needs to send those negroes some educators.

I'm proud of my peeps down in Louisiana for taking William Jefferson out of public life. I hope that Joseph Cao does well in his new duties. It is unlikely he will have more than one term. Gotta believe that the Dems will have a high-quality and HONEST candidate to run against him in 2010 ... but, for now, I'm just happy that the national embarrassment known as Dollar Bill is outta here!

peace, Villager

Y'all get ahold of your hats, Cao and Jindal do not represent a post-racial face of politics in Louisiana. There are only two races in the South: Blacks and Everybody else.

Each time I go back to Louisiana, I'm shocked and appalled by the degree of racism in daily life. Even in New Orleans, or maybe, especially in New Orleans.

Cao was elected because of the huge number of Blacks who never went back to N.O. Jefferson was never defeated when N.O. was 70% African-American. Cao was recruited by Whites. He's not the result of any resurgence of political activism by the Vietnamese there. He was chosen by Whites, just as was Jindal.

Louisiana remains the most racist, backwards place I've ever known.

Hmm I agree with you that the Rethugs better think about the changing demos in America. I think their tent is about to fall apart.

We'll see who they put up in 2012.

Hinduism to Catholicism? Aren't these two religions very different?

I thought the Blair conversion was interesting. One of my ex bosses, a former civil right activist, raised Baptist converted to Catholicism a few years ago. I was stunned. Another friend a writer/director who I thought was an atheist also joined the Church.

Interesting point about the religious criterias to become a rethug. Hmmm, would a Muslim be welcome in that tent?

"Each time I go back to Louisiana, I'm shocked and appalled by the degree of racism in daily life. Even in New Orleans, or maybe, especially in New Orleans."

Jeez, I feel that way about Philly.

Bookerrising is claiming that the black vote in New Orleans still went to Jefferson and it was the overwhelming white turnout that brought victory to Cao.

Now I already know what to expect from those bootlickin minstrels at BR.

I'd like to find out what percentage of the black vote Cao received.

Anonymous said...

I don't see him as any different from Bobby Jindal, they Republicans of "color" are usually worse than the white ones when it comes to issues with blacks and usually turn out to be more of the Jesse Helm's politician and will do all he can to keep blacks in N.O. where they are, at the bottom of the rung. That said, that state and its crooked politicians never cease to amaze.

Anonymous said...

After reading reports of his win, its as if the few blacks left in New Orleans have been written off and not even part of the landscape there politically anymore since almost every article barely mentioned the black voter and have deemed them irrelevant, although I guess with only 12% of them voting they were. Mr Cao won with the white vote, and, he is indebted to them, so, what will he do? The bidding of the rich who want the town devoid of anything black as it continues its roll towards being Disney like town for the rich. Its amazing that the GOP runs that state after the way it acted during Katrina, goes to show, white folks will vote for anyone Republican, as long as they are not of African descent in Louisiana and most other Deep South states.

GOP, anyone one but a black person!

Field I likened Jefferson and the rest of these assh*les (take your pick--The Hip Hop Mayor, Marion Barry, Sharpe James et al) to Mugabe. They back us into a corner, as one of my commenters say, and dare us to unseat them or abandon them lest Mr. Charlie comes back to rule and abuse. Better to ripped off by another negro and his cronies than a racist/imperialist/Republican, eh? I guess that's the magic of self-determination.

I read b/w the lines of a few of your commenters' expostions and I still detect a little bit of displacement: no don't blame Jefferson and our slavish devotion to personality "there can only be one leader" politics...blame Bush and Katrina for de-populating NOLA! Poor folks didn't vote...Vietnamese dude wins. Well, so? De-population certainly hasn't stopped black folks from selling drugs, using drugs and killing one another in the Big Easy. Hmmm...so why is it difficult to organize around a decent candidate, an alternative to Jefferson and win? Isn't that what barack did--buck the establishment, the preachers, the kofi-wearing activists, the pastel-and-feather hatted church ladies? He said y'all I'm creating a new paradigm. I guess the message didn't get through to those bammas down there. yeah I said bammas. Like the ones who figured they could beat Saxby Chambliss in Ga. by parading out Ludacris and the Real Housewives of Atlanta.
We have to close this chink int he armor, Field. You are absolutely right. B/c yeah, the GOP is taking notes. Copius ones...

Well New Orleans got rid of "cold cash" Jefferson but I see the ho-house hoppin Christian conservative David Vitter is still representing Louisiana in the US Senator.

And no whiny articles and posts about how white conservatives vote blindly or are addicted to "personality".

Hypocrisy abounds.

Houston, there are three races along the Gulf Coast- Blacks, Mexicans, and the rest. Maybe Jefferson will run in two years if Houston will deport New Orleans' refugees back home. 70% of blacks and the rest of the city would like them to go home, then we can judge if black people are making better choices in those they vote for.

SO can this be described as a silent REVOLUTION! could it be that minority's have finally tapped into beating the "MAN" at his own game! did BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA unleash a MONSTER? and could that monster be called "STRATEGY"? the mission minority's no longer have a problem with putting on the BLACK SUIT and NECKTIE, and if you really look close you will see that they have taken on the IMAGE of the "MAN" can this be a silent REVOLUTION in term's of "THE CAUSE" being greater than the so called, "POWER'S THAT BE.

Unrelated but:

Better get back in the gym and work on those ABS again Field, the Supremes just rejected the whole birth certificate fiasco.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court has turned down an emergency appeal from a New Jersey man who says President-elect Barack Obama is ineligible to be president because he was a British subject at birth.

The court did not comment on its order Monday rejecting the call by Leo Donofrio of East Brunswick, N.J., to intervene in the presidential election. Donofrio says that since Obama had dual nationality at birth _ his mother was American and his Kenyan father at the time was a British subject _ he cannot possibly be a "natural born citizen," one of the requirements the Constitution lists for eligibility to be president.

Because I voted in this election, I will comment. Dollar Bill ended up in the run-off because the black vote was split the first time we voted. We had excellent black, democratic candidates(Cedric Richmond and Bryon Lee) who went up against Jefferson. Jefferson's loyalist voted for him and because Lee and Richmond was receiving the other votes,it was split. Helena Morano received most of the white votes so he ended up in a run off with her. No one wanted Moreno(who was a tv anchor person with zero experience) in office so, most voted for Jefferson and that is how he won the democratic nominee spot. Cao, had run the republican nominee spot the first go round. We just waited until the election between the democratic and republican nominee and voted Cao in.
But, you are right, he won't be in there long. Most people really want Cedric Richmond to run again.

We actually had to vote 3 times for this seat.

When I hear that he is going to be "the new face of the Republican Party," I really hope not. He declares war every social service there is, including education...especially education.

Same deal in Arkansas, which borders LA to the north. Not a whole lot of love lost on either side of the color line there.

ali, I am pretty good friends with Richmond. He is one of your rising stars down there. He is a Morehouse man, but I won't hold it against him.:) It's a shame that the voters there didn't pick him or one of the other candidates in the primary. But thanks for breaking it down for us.

12% Black vote....in a MAJORITY Black district and this guy CLAIMS that this represents ample proof that Black folks are open minded politically and ideologically?

Let me give you a clue Filled Kneegrow:

The average Black voter has 3 modes:

* Voting for the Democrats
* Highly motivated to vote for Democrats (and thus a strong registration drive)
* Stay home and not vote as a sign of no confidence for the ONE DEMOCRAT who is running

12% damned percent and you want to make the case that a revolution in CIVIL RESPONSIBILITY has been uncovered.

Give me a break!!

You FAIL to make note that the biggest political dust ups in the city of New Orleans take place among BLACK DEMOCRATS and WHITE DEMOCRATS!!! I am sure the White Republicans live in Slidel - the 35 mile drive across Lake Pontchartrain.

Some of you all kill me in your assumption that racial animus has a partisan and ideological bounds. There are just as many racist White Democrats content seeing Blacks "in their place" AND voting for their same party than equal to them financially and academically - seeking to move right next door...and later date their daughter.
